To be fair, none of them are totally outstanding, but equally none of them are truly offensive. Dilemma.

To me, Cuckoo Clock 24/7. Considering the subject of the lyrics, Brian might have made it a conscious decision to make the "Cuckoo, cuckoo"'s as annoying as possible, and I think he succeeded.

I'm going with Ten Little Indians. Me too. It’s all pretty light fair, but this one is the most juvenile.

Going with "Ten Little Indians".

I think once you remove 409, Surfin' Safari and... Moon Dawg, it could be any of them. Gone for Cuckoo Clock, though

Ten Little Indians. For the life of me, I can't figure out why that song was picked as a single.

Hmmm, on the whole CC was a pretty weird and slightly inauspicious "major label" lead vocal debut from the big guy.

Not that it matters, because it doesn't, but I always liked Cuckoo Clock. 'Specially after I found out the bird Brian was singing about was Murry's Mynah Bird.

"Summertime Blues" is comparatively lifeless.

I like the bawdiness of the lyrics, it's a bit like an episode of a British '70s sitcom. Surprised you don't dig Ten Little Indians - it's a tight little number, with interesting b/v's arrangement.

Well, Brian's telling a story, probably from a recent experience. Picture him sitting on the living room sofa at 3701 W 119th St in Hawthorne with Carol Mountain or whoever it was and his Dad's bird is making a lot of noise, distracting them from talking and carrying on with the proceedings. It could be real frustrating to say the least.....

Here we go agaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiinn!! Thanks, Al.
Back to the beginning. So, lots of different topics going on here for the songs in the first album. But what is a step too far? Fashion critique, that's what! Let's dump The Shift

The Shift is cool. Some unorthodox chord changes, as opposed to the rest of the album.

The Shift is cool. Some unorthodox chord changes, as opposed to the rest of the album. Nice observation - it’s polished and has a bit more to offer tune wise. Perhaps Nick Venet was a little more behind the wheel on this one, as it’s musically slick but the bg vocal arrangement isn’t as strong. I think it also suffers from being at the end of side two, which I always find a bit looser than side one, relatively speaking. I just might change my vote before the poll closes in 4 HOURS!

With 7 votes, Ten Little Indians take a ride in a Big Canoe and down the waterfall. We'll never hear from them again - until the Ultimate losers round in 2 years or something!
Anyway, time to get the oyster shells out and sharpened for Round 2!
I feel it's time for The Shift, groovey chords and all, to shape-up or shift out!

Back to the beginning. So, lots of different topics going on here for the songs in the first album. But what is a step too far? Fashion critique, that's what! Let's dump The Shift Good grief, pw! "The Shift" is the most important track on the album, the first step on the creative road that would peak with "Good Vibrations"! This was my very first BB post anywhere, back in late 2004: "I have often wondered why no one (to my knowledge) has ever mentioned 'The Shift' as a pointer to the future. Most reviews quickly dismiss it as 'a fashion statement by Brian and Mike' or words to that effect. On the face of it, the main tune is a 12-bar blues (I I I I IV IV I I V IV I V). However, Brian 'shifts' the key up a whole tone in bar 3 and back down again in bar 12 (in Carl's solo too). As far as I know this is unique--no-one else has ever done this." Now for the difficult bit: What would I dump? "Summertime Blues", I suppose... Eddie Cochran's original is definitive.

I'll go Summertime Blues here since it's a very weak version of the song.
