...but not for "The Shift". Grrr. I tried to give The Shift two votes but it wasn't possible. ;-)
Seems like Alan will wait until the transgressor clicks another button! He can wait for as long as it takes. (Either he's a teacher or he always wanted to be a teacher ) In a just world, pw, "The Shift" would be the Surfin' Safari Survivor. I fear it won't be, but this isn't a just world.

OK - The Cuckoo got clocked, and the Chug got, err, lugged off the poll at least. Root Beer, says the tribe.
Round 5, and we're down to the final 6, with The Shift still making a pretty good stand, let's see what transpires this round (that jk is a persuasive chap).
Results, statistically accurate or not (like last round) will be announced after the poll is locked on 2 days time.

My two choices this time are, for reasons I've already given, "Surfin'" and "County Fair". Eek. Once these are gone things are going to get truly sticky.

The Shift is creepy. Very very creepy. “ With the slit up the side, you can't resist that touch?” Let’s not. County is fine, but it’s also gotta go. But not as bad as The Shift, get out of my face with that filth

He’s talking about the improving feature of adding a slit to a dress that may not otherwise have one. Your filthy mind needs to go to confession and get those impure thoughts out of your mind. Now go take a shower and calm down. 😝

Plus, it just sounds wrong and creepy. From the same band that brought you Hey Little Tomboy.

Oh ya, and it’s just a boring song that sounds like it was written in 5 minutes. They should’ve end of the album with Lonely Sea, such a better send off to a decent if not very remarkable debut.

If you look for the best in people, and their motives, you can find that too. This is a lens of voyeuristic 2021 standard applied to a 1961 set of mores. The "shift" dress in some version is still around - 60 years later. I grew up in a house of boys, badly outnumbered. They played baseball in the backyard and I played baseball (not for my skill because they needed a warm body to catch a ball) and learned to climb trees and never thought it was a "boy thing" - it was a "kid thing." It is 60s era moral code. I was a tomboy while doing girlie stuff. Shaving my legs with a man's (my father's) razor, because that is all they had. Some smart company making razors, started making pink ones in the late 70s. No one had a girlie razor or pink shaving foam/creme until the market blew up in the 70s. They grew up in homes without pink razors. What you grow up with, informs a lot of writing. You don't create in a vacuum. Your surroundings and your experiences help you create. It is absurd to apply a 2021 lens of life to life, as it was in the 60s, when they were writing and newsflash - no one objected to the lyrics as "objectionable" because that was life back then. It was contemporaneous to life and exactly why it was successful. People could identify with it. To a greater extent - what they write - is getting back to high school days. Even now. That's Why God Made The Radio - for falling in love. You can read anything into a song or a verse and find some evil - only if you choose to. It is called "human sexuality." Boys checking out girls - and Thank God for The Shift, the mini skirt, and thigh high boots. Does 60s music and concepts/lyrics need to come with a disclaimer or a warning label?

You must crap your pants when you listen to rap music. "Turned On" means getting excited about someone or something. Rock and Roll must really screw with your head. It's all about getting turned on by cars, alcohol, sex, drugs, rock and roll. I can keep on going. You must get offended by most rock music, then. And guess what, go ask your parents if they were "turned on" to each other when they met.

Well, as it’s 2021, I’m going to judge it in 2021, thank you very much. I think it’s a garbage song with garbage lyrics and an ok guitar solo. Second worst song on the album, it’s near the bottom of their entire discography, and it makes me uncomfortable. 10 Little Indians is even more problematic, despite the fact that it was probably seen as just a novelty in 1962.

This is the last thing I’ll say on the topic. In a livestream a couple weeks ago, AGD said ”the most important thing about the Beach boys is the music, and the joy it brings.” I’m obviously paraphrasing, but I understand the point he was trying to get across. For me, the music of The Shift is boring and lifeless, and it gives me no joy, just disgust. Therefore, it doesn’t pass the AGD Beach Boys test. Bad song, moving on

The Shift dress isn't dated. Nor is the Shift "creepy". A Shift dress is a nice, simple, short, above-the-knee dress. The bust is usually fitted with darts, and the skirt is either cut straight or with a narrow A-line (tight). Typically, a Shift dress is sleeveless, though some styles have short sleeves or off-the-shoulder variations. They currently sell them at Nordstroms and Macy's. "You can't resist that touch". "Touch" in this case is to create a favorable impression; as in "nice touch". An effect. Taste. Feel. Style. Ability to influence. startupfashion.com/fashion-archives-history-shift-dress/Since Mike Love gets co-credit to this song, I'm thinking he had hand in writing most or all of the lyrics.

Second worst song on the album, it’s near the bottom of their entire discography, and it makes me uncomfortable. 10 Little Indians is even more problematic, despite the fact that it was probably seen as just a novelty in 1962. Yes it is - but it is not contemporary music where you can, even potentially reach out to the artists on Facebook. If you feel that it is a "garbage" tune - musically, then it is fine to critique it in that way but it feels like cultural-mores critique, and condemnation. Plenty of harsh music critics around since the 60s, and plenty who dismissed the BB music as a "passing phase." If you feel uncomfortable it is could be the lens you are using. That album is "before my time" as a BB fan (I consider myself 2nd gen) and I don't dismiss it - I classify it into the category of early 60s music, alongside other cultural phenomena. "10 Little Indians" was a nursery/preschool counting song (not their version) that I taught for years - as what is known as a finger-play for kids to learn language and counting skills. Now it is not part of that curriculum for many enlightened reasons. Judging 1961-2 music in 2021 with some fairness, I feel, requires some baseline cultural inquiry as to what was going on in 1961/2. Otherwise it is judging it in a vacuum without context and becomes distorted. It is like a period film, from the 1900's, with a computer in the corner of the kitchen and an SUV in the driveway. It is anachronistic.

"Surfin'" is my first pick. "Surfin' Safari" would be my other, but that would be wasting my vote.
I like Dennis' song. Guess I'll vote for "The Shift" to try and save it. Not a creepy song in any
way. Talking about it being creepy is strange. These were innocent times.
