Sorry Alan, way too late to this party to influence the result. Having entered this fun house world at Pet Sounds, then working backwards over the next few years and finally encountering Surfin' Safari it was always going to be underwhelming when I got there. Having said that I've always had a soft spot for Dennis's cherubic vocal on Little Girl and if it had been up to me I'd have liked to see a head-to-head between that and The Shift for the top placing. But as it isn't I'll go for "Surfin".
Yes!! Peter, you wonderful man! But some things just aren't meant to be. "Surfin'" for me too.

Pete-brah!!!! You are welcome at any stage, the party never ends! Pet Sounds, eh! That’s pretty good going, I didn’t enter until KTSA - although that’s mainly my parents fault (I wasn’t born until circa ‘71).

I myself came in with the Sunflower/Surf's Up twofer 30 years after the event and then followed it up in both directions, buying two twofers at a time, one in each direction up to and including Love You. (A kind poster at a now-defunct BB forum burned a lot of the later stuff for me.) Pet Sounds I bought by itself, as a "twofer" consisting of a mono and a stereo version.

This was thirty-five years before I was smitten. (My Pet Sounds LP came to an ignominious end when I trod on it while it was playing.)

Sorry Will , but this is a no-brainer for me. 409 as you might expect, purrs and growls, cruises up and down the boulevard showing off and maybe turning a few heads, but essentially you're sitting in a tin can going around the block a few times before ending up back where you parked it last night.
Surfin Safari, on the other hand, sees our guys with a warm wind blowing through sun-bleached hair and actually going places. Locations with exotic (to a non-Californian) names like Huntington, Malibu, Doheny, and further afield to Puerto Rico and Peru. And it's all done with such exuberance and energy, everything that 409 doesn't have for me.

(My Pet Sounds LP came to an ignominious end when I trod on it while it was playing.) You must have great balance and resistance to dizziness!Haha, if only! Well, it must have been in the first week of October '62 that I first made the acquaintance of The Beach Boys when I saw "Surfin' Safari" enter the Billboard Top Twenty (at #19) as reproduced in the UK music mag New Musical Express. This gives it the edge on "409" in what would otherwise be an impossible choice. So out goes the automobile half of the equation in a sputtering cloud of exhaust fumes...

I was thirteen in August '66 when I bought Pet Sounds and by then the party was already in full swing, so for me that was the perfect reason to persevere throughout all of this joyous madness. But KTSA ? That's not quite arriving late for the party, more like turning up after the parents had got home, seen the mess and chucked everybody out. But hey, hats off to you mate, for sticking around after an induction of such mediocrity, and the delights of working backwards from there must have been extra sweet.

Some clarification please, does our vote go to the one we wish to win, or the one we wish to eliminate? Thanks.

Some clarification please, does our vote go to the one we wish to win, or the one we wish to eliminate? Thanks. In the final you vote for the song you wish to win, as per the banner just above where you tick the boxes, and also Alan's post above, which he has craftily capitalized: "VOTE NOW FOR YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK". At least that's how I'm reading it

LOL - well, it was new in the local stores back in ole’ 80/81. And as an enthusiastic and wide eyed 10 year old, I wasn’t as discerning a listener as the grizzled and world weary pretentious music snob who presides here today.

I'm for "409".

For me, this might be the only time where a surfing song wins out over a hot rod song.
Surfin’ Safari is my pick.

That’s it! The winner of The Beach Boys Survivor: Surfin’ Safari is:
SURFIN’ SAFARI with an epic 15 of 21 votes!!!!!!
Thanks all those who played, especially several new faces - your participation is appreciated.
The next edition of The Beach Boys Survivor will commence Sunday 21/02 4pm my time (GMT +11).
Look out for some format tweaks that will align the lifestyle of BB Survivor with the spirit and random nature of the Television show!
