The high-pitched wail at 1:09 in Dennis's "End Of The Show", is one of the most mournful sounds I've ever heard. But what's producing it? Looking at Craig's sessionography for POB, it could conceivably be Ed Carter on electric lead guitar or Dennis on ARP String Ensemble (alto or soprano sax sound). But these are just wild guesses. Does anyone know for sure?

That's a vocal, and I think it's Bruce.

I always heard that as Bruce as well. Great track.

Thirding Bruce at the top of a harmony stack.

Thanks a lot, guys. I noticed that Bruce had arranged the vocal stack but never felt I was hearing a human voice. So that's him singing falsetto -- a high G, if my ear isn't deceiving me. Goodness...
That man is full of surprises! The more I learn about Bruce, the more I like him. It was an incident involving a taxi described in The Lost Beach Boy that put me off him for years.

What was the real purpose of that Don't Talk a cappella snippet? I don't buy the "getting the musicians in the mood" theory

The unused Don't Talk a capella piece was actually an intro, like You Still Believe in Me.
Definitely wasn't to get the musicians in the mood, as he did it a month after recording the track, and they aren't backing vocals, because it was recorded a capella in isolation. It wasn't a reference for the strings either - those are a totally different arrangement. Brian instructed Hal that the track was to be fronted by a vocal piece.

Still a fine idea not to use them...

I hear ya, AGD. The vocals change too fast to fit over anything. Once in a while I consider the idea of smashing them up against the piano demo, but naaah.

Am I losing my mind, or did we lose another one of the Stockholm Strings & Horns in the last few years?? Could have sworn that one of the guys died but I can't find anything to back that up. (Besides Markus - I don't count 19 years ago as "the last few years"!)

I’ll be honest, I never realized how often Bob Norberg showed up on beach boys songs! I just assumed he was a friend and fellow songwriter of Brian’s. My mistake!
Was wondering if there’s a list or something of his full work of what he did, I know he’s definitely on stuff like Lana, Baker Man, Surfer Moon, Little Saint Nick, etc. It’s fascinating, almost like he could’ve been a member at some point!

was the beach boys love you ever released in reel to reel format? I took a fairly serious look around and found nothing. I noticed Love You on cassette tape and eight-track, but not reel-to-reel. Maybe someone else will come up with the goods.

Worth noting that Break Away was published under the newly established Bri-Mur, as was Cool Cool Water in May, which makes the November timeline questionable... August 20, 1969, apparently. But interesting that the final Sea of Tunes publications were registered in December 1968, and everything after that was Brother Publishing or Bri-Mur, months before the sale. Irving Music reportedly acquired Sea of Tunes the week of August 17 to 23 1969.

What are the sources of the following and is there anywhere I can watch the full unedited / clipped versions of the footage:
1. Dennis and Carl being interviewed in the studio - Dennis saying "That was the birth of the three brothers, singing together". As featured in "It's Ok", "Endless Harmony", the Disney Doc and "American Band".
2. Dennis being interviewed on the Harmony.
3. Carl walking on the beach with Jonah and Justin - saying "I was about 8 or 9, and Brian asked me to sing with him"

If they invested the $700,000 Murry Wilson sold Sea of Tunes for in an S&P 500 index fund in 1969, it would be worth $175 million today. But it still would have been better to keep it because of the income it generates.

The footage probably around 1980 where Dennis says "I was terrified for my brother". A few years after the It's OK special...

It aired belatedly on our local PBS station in 1983. Lots of footage from Knebworth, 1980, and that year's July 4th show. Also included clips from Kraft Music Hall and at least one other 60's tv show - Andy Williams, maybe?
