I was thinking this would be possible for a separate thread, but I don't think this is exactly historically earth shattering or anything.
But the commonly agreed on story is that for the Morgan sessions, at least for "Surfin'," the instruments were Carl on guitar, Al on standup bass, and Brian on snare drum. And the story with Brian playing the drum is that it was literally *a drum* - just a snare. And Al said either that he didn't realize that sticks were a separate rental or that he flat-out forgot to rent drum sticks, so Brian played the drum with his finger, and either a shirt or jacket covering the drum itself, and the drum was behind Brian, so not only did he have to tap the thing with his finger, but he had to do it behind his back.
Here's the thing...I ran "Surfin'" through lalal.ai, and I think I got a good isolation of the drum. It sounds like there's also a bass drum in there, playing on every quarter note during the verse! I entertained the thought that maybe it's just some resonance from the standup bass, but nope: Al plays a few filler notes on the bass between quarter notes, and those fillers don't have an equivalent on the isolated drums...so yeah, this is interesting...if it's not a bass drum, then was it perhaps someone hitting the floor with his foot or something? Sound attached.
Yep, Brian's thumping a kick in there. They rented three parts of a kit with brushes including a ride cymbal for Lavender.

I can believe that...I mean...it sure sounds like the snare on "Surfin'" is being hit with brushes.

The July 1970 Flame showcase at "Big Gus' club": I've googled until my eyes were square, and I can't find out a damn thing about the place. Anyone here know anything?

I spent two most educational hours looking for another picture featuring that interior, to no avail. I can only assume it looked that way for only a short time, for whatever reason. Which would explain why no one here recognizes it from their clubbing days... I went on to explore various desperate avenues, including Gazzarri's, owned by one Bill Gazzarri (Bill Gazz?) and Gus Avecedo of the International House of Music, but they all led nowhere. Ah well...

I asked LA 60s culture oracle Dom Priore, and even he didn't know!

Here's another picture of that gig from a different vantage-point:

I asked LA 60s culture oracle Dom Priore, and even he didn't know! I don't know if you or anyone else here is in a position to ask Marilyn. It seems to have been an unusual gig, to say the least, so there's a good chance she would remember it.

I'll do that very thing! Splendid! What I find a little disconcerting is that the few hits for "big gus club" all relate to this one gig.

So…when writing my book I started to correspond with Billy Hinsche. Since he was part of that event I asked him about it and he said it was at a ‘now defunct club on Santa Monica Boulevard called, I think, The Big Gus Club.” Now I thought it looked like the Whisky and assumed Billy’s memory was faulty there but…I then discovered that Judy Sims attended the event and wrote it up in the July 11 Disc and Music Echo. She states that it was at a “new club somewhere on Santa Monica Boulevard (near the Big Gus Hot Dog Stand, in case you are in the neighborhood)”. Obviously this suggests that Billy’s memory was spot on….But maybe the club was not actually called that……

Either way…Judy Sims was the California correspondent for Disc and Music Echo…she surely knew the Whiskey and would have said if it was there, especially as she was writing only a week or so later. And, even though he was recalling 40 years later, Billy probably would recall that too

Does this make me a Smile hater? Also, the Whiskey is on Sunset, not Santa Monica.

Amongst the clubs there were PJs and the Troubadour but Sims said it was “a new club “

What we need is for someone to go through the Hollywood/Santa Monica papers for 1969/1970... Note also it says "hot dog stand", implying it wasn't a building.

I also just tried googling "Big gus hot dog stand" and a dozen permutations and once again found nothing. Might "Big Gus" have been working a differently named hot dog stand in Santa Monica Boulevard at that time?

I think Big Gus, whoever he may be, is either turning in his grave or (hopefully) his ears are burning with all this renewed interest in his trade.
I must confess, it's been a fascinating journey through various online histories of LA clubs, restaurants and hot dog stands but enough's enough (famous last words)...
