jk, you nailed it! Right next door to Big Guss’, which advertises "The World’s Biggest All Beef Hot Dogs” is the Classic Theater, thus highly likely the venue in question. This is a 1972 photo, two years after the appearance of the Flame and Beach Boys and associates, so while the marquee on the Classic Theater states “Adult Entertainment,” it could have well been a regular club in 1970. Also possible it operated under a different name at that time, although the sign looks rather vintage.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Those many hours spent staring at historic photos (and going cross-eyed in the process) paid dividends in the end!
Although I nearly fell off my chair when I saw it...

One small problem with the caption: there is currently no Sweetzer Street in LA, so not easy to work out where the stand actually is.
That said, there is a North Sweetzer Avenue that currently crosses Santa Monica Blvd in Crescent (just a hoot and a holler east of Barney's Beanery).

And we have an address: The Gardens of Taxco was founded in 1971 at 1113 N. Harper Avenue, which is indeed on SMB just along from N. Sweetzer Avenue. That means Big Guss' was at something like 8250. Was the Flame showcase at the Classic Theater? It's a possibility, but the report said " near the Big Gus Hot Dog Stand", not "next to..." so... who knows? This is what it looks like today:

In 1971 and 1972 "The Big Guss" is listed at "682 S. Vermnt" while Classic Theater is listed at "8257 Snta Monica".

In the 1969 to 1973 phone directory the only address on that side in the 8250s is 8253 Santa Monica Blvd and from 1970 through 1973 it is listed as "The Yellow Submarine Restaurant".
"The Big Guss" restaurant continued on 682 S. Vermont until 1975 at least when it was written up for it's restaurant.
Maybe the Yellow Submarine served the "Big Guss" hot dog? "Big Guss" was also a race horse in the early 60s.

Very plausible. Thing is, both Billy and the reporter clearly state the club was on SMB. Also, a sign for The Yellow Submarine is visible in the 1972 photo, but on the other side of the Classic from Big Guss. So... nothing changes in the BB cosmos. Confusion reigns.

"Big Gus's Night Club" at 8267 Santa Monica Blvd. "Front of Kelly's Steak House" June 5 may have been its opening.Looks like it might still be there, but sit way back to the north.

Cameron Mott I love you.
Seriously... this is the kind of group research that simultaenously blows my mind and warms my soul. It took less than a week to find an address, an image of the hot dog stand and an advert for the actual venue, thus closing a decades long open file. Why does it matter so much to me, to anyone? Well, speaking personally, since my first running dive into the World of Wilson in June 1975 (damn you, Nick Kent!!), the music of Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys have afforded me so much pleasure (and sometimes solace), and handed me such a writing career as I've had that to attempt to accurately document their history, often in the face of rampant stupidity, gross misinformation and flat out lies, is the least I can do, or try to do. That I've also made so very many friends in the BB fan world, and latterly got to know the bands, is a glorious bonus. That's why: because I have to, because I want to, and in this I'm not alone. I'll not name names, you know who you are, and the torch we've carried these last four decades is being passed on to safe hands.

It's heart-warming posts like the above that make me so pleased I chose to focus just a little bit more on this particular band than on any other. And if I can add some snippet of information along the way, so much the better. While briefly on holiday I discovered that the Classic Theatre has also been called the Classic Art Theatre: "The Classic Art Theatre opened on March 9th, 1966 with a double bill of Gene Kelly in An American in Paris and Mario Lanza in The Great Caruso. It started to show adult movies in 1968 until it closed in 1974. "In 2019 it operates as a dry cleaners named Village Cleaners." Source: cinematreasures.org/theaters/60974Maybe they dropped the Art (if it was ever there) when they started showing dirty movies. Interestingly, the OST of An American in Paris is entirely comprised of music by Gershwin, which I'm sure completes some circle somewhere...

I've since seen this very item described on eBay as a "vintage matchcover". Er... are we still looking for something, or has it been found?

Think that’s a match packet. "Universal Match" is a bit of a clue... H'mm. Just a bit of one. They should have made it plural. I found a mention of Kelly's Steak House that might be of more than passing interest. It's a few posts down on this fantastic page, just after The Riptides. (Don't forget the Comments and Replies.)

Why is it considered cowardly to laugh at a cigarette butt going ‘pfft’?
