I wonder how we assess the effect of the Grammy tribute. Are we keeping an eye on sales on Amazon or has anything entered the billboard charts? Are we continuing to monitor how many people watch the show and how popular and how highly rated is in whatever platform things like that get monitored and rated. I'll try to do some research into that myself but it would be good to know the commercial and critical effect and reaction of the program. In other words, if anyone has dipped into that already in their free time, sure we all would like to know. We have indeed some comment up above about the Beach Boys albums on amazon.

The 3 acts I enjoyed (from first place to third) were: - Mumford & Sons, I Know There's An Answer - as we know, The Beach Boys attract a broad church of disciples, and for my money in terms musical likes/dislikes/opinion/appeal, this band showed a real affinity for the original material, while also desconstructing the song and making it their own. Not to mention a "deep cut" getting an airing. - Norah Jones, Warmth - the intro before the band & back-up singers kick-in, is pure gold; I wish Norah soloed the whole thing. - My Morning Jacket, I Get Around, was pretty lively, imo, nothing new in terms of interpretation but really provided some actual Rock to the proceedings. The rest, meh, and special warning to Beck fans, all of his contributions are to be avoided, he's a loser, baby - again imo. Well, having watched the show for the fourth time last night, I have to agree with others that it really isn’t as bad as some of the early nitpicking would suggest. For me, there are but two iffy inclusions, the first being Hanson’s spirited but gormless attempt at Barbara Ann. In their brief interview they extol the virtues of brotherly harmony singing and claim, “When you’re family you blend in a way nobody else can”, then proceed to disprove that notion as soon as they get a few bars into the song. The other song with which I have a problem is one of Alan’s choices. I can see where your argument is coming from bonny lad, and wholly agree with and respect your thinking. But I’m coming at this from a different viewpoint. Have to say also that your other choices were spot on. I agree wholeheartedly with your No3, Jim James temporarily leaving his day job training hippogriffs at Hogwarts, and completely smashing I Get Around out of the park is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the evening At No2 Norah Jones’ rendition of Warmth of the Sun was a mesmerising performance, showing everyone, including a gobsmacked Mike Love up in the gallery that this song would satisfy the most discerning clientele in any smokey blues club. This would be my preferred choice as best in show. But Mumford and Sons at numero uno? Andrew described their stab at I Know There’s an Answer as ‘confusing’, and I’ll go a bit further than that. Yes, they were an inspired choice, something different to throw into the mix. A long established London band , a mainstay of the English folk rock scene. They had their chance to play to their strengths and to completely own a truly wonderful deep cut, but seemingly Marcus Mumford woke up that morning and decided it would be a spiffing idea to pretend he’d just flown in from Nashville. Don’t get me wrong, country music is a wonderful genre, but perhaps best left to the experts who dwell in those hallowed places. For me, if you can’t even be true to your own roots how can you possibly be true to The Beach Boys’ legacy? A missed opportunity lads, let’s hope you get a second chance sometime to prove what you can really do with one of their classics.

Interesting about Hanson.
A colleague told me that she watched the broadcast on cable and kindly spoke to me about it. She said she actually expected less from Hanson/called bullshit on their family blend claims, only to be pleasantly surprised by their actual performance.

The Hanson's simply failed to ignite the crowd and their performance was fine enough but it lacked the raucous sloppiness that that song is supposed to have. They interpreted it as a family Harmony as they have said and celebrated, but the song is not about hitting particular or refined harmonies it's about "hey you take this part I take that part and the words don't matter." In the Dolby theater itself I thought it was just okay and watching it on the show I'm rooting for them over and over again, and it's still just okay.

"but seemingly Marcus Mumford woke up that morning and decided it would be a spiffing idea to pretend he’d just flown in from Nashville". Maybe Nashville a hundred years ago? Saw Ringo and his All Star band there a few years ago and of couple Brian and the Boys have played there in the iconic Ryman. Go there sometime. You will be amazed at the entire music scene.

For those who missed it the first time, The Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys re-airs on CBS at 9:00 pm eastern time on Monday night, May 29.

Thanks for the heads up north coast. I definitely recommend for those of you who can watching it on the streaming service like Paramount Plus which you can get with Amazon prime. When they show it on CBS, at least in the initial airing, it was about 80% commercials. I'm exaggerating but not by much.
And I will say it again, the very final moment of the night, the very final bit of drama and theatricality, was Brandi Carlile shouting out "the Beach Boys" and gesturing to the balcony with the Beach Boys in it. This was the final and absolute moment of joyous victory. And yet in the television broadcast they cut to the credits before that moment. You can see it on YouTube if you look for God Only Knows by John Legend and Brandi carlile. I wish I knew who to call on the phone and tell them to restore that great coda.
