When, I suppose it was LeAnn Rimes, introduced the individual Beach Boys and spoke about how Dave and his guitar play with Carl was Central to the first four albums, Dave leaned over to Al and said something. I wonder what he said. He could have said, boy it's great to hear that wonderful recognition. Or he could have said yes Al we replaced that folk thing that you were trying to do. Or he could have said, I think I was on the fifth album too. Can anyone read lips and determine what David said to Al as you can see during the tribute show because they cut to Dave at that exact moment?
By the way during that little bit of tribute to each of the Beach Boys, which I thought was fine, they should also have said that these five men together formed the reconstituted band of the Beach Boys who rocked the world with 73 or 74 ? shows worldwide in the 50th anniversary. I really think the accomplishment of the 50th Anniversary concerts should have been mentioned in some way and should be more prominent in everyone's historical discussion of the beach boys.

It's interesting that you picked up on Dave's reaction during the tribute to the Beach Boys. It's difficult to know exactly what he said without lip-reading or having access to an audio recording, but it's possible that he made a comment about the recognition being well-deserved or perhaps he was reminiscing about his time with the band. Regarding your second point, I agree that the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary concerts were a significant accomplishment and should be acknowledged in their historical discussion. It's unfortunate that they were not mentioned in the tribute show you watched. However, it's possible that the tribute show's focus was on the early years of the band and not their later accomplishments. Regardless, it's important to recognize all of the Beach Boys' contributions to music history.

Cannot deny that I am somewhat surprised by the ‘meh’ responses to Pentatonix’ rendition of H&V, which I thought was really polished. Why the rather negative attitude towards it ? The intricate/interwoven harmonies were all spot on… or so I thought ! Am I missing something, or aren’t they just hip enough ? 😂

It was technically adept but... somehow sterile, except at the very end. The band can, and have, done better.
To return to my original pre-broadcast opinion of this, it turned out to be much better than I was anticipating (the odd clunker excepted), and of course it was wonderful to see the band together* once more, and likely for the last time. Never forget, the youngest of them is 75 this year and the rest are in their early 80s. Let's appreciate what we still have while we still have it.
[*I know what you're thinking, OK ?]

In watching the program again on the Paramount stream, you realize once more with crystal clairty that The Beach Boys electrified and beautified a splendid era of pop music in the history of this civilization. It was a great time to have ears. As well as a radio. And a phonograph.

Agree 💯 on the privacy thing. This is their night to be the flies-on-the-wall watching how others have perceived this music. Dave Marks once said something about the band being in a "bubble" - not one I want to burst. They appeared very much at peace taking it all in. It must have been a grand event, after the journey they have traveled.

Oh I have no great desire to know or to pry and yes the Beach Boys need their private moments as I have said elsewhere and often. I just hope that Dave is very happy and I wonder if he's troubled by the constant refusal to see him as a founding member of the band because ambiguous as to how one defines founding. He didn't play on the first song and yet he was on the first contract and the first nationally released hits. I don't know if the terminology means much to him and I just hope he was deeply satisfied to be cheered by crowds worldwide and cheered at the Grammy's.
But I do wish they had simply also added to their incomium that these five United in 2012 for one of the most amazing Global tours and absolutely fantastic performances by all five men. I don't want Dave to simply be perceived as a relic from the past but as an active member of that accomplishment. As for what Dave said, he is so witty and so clever he probably said something so insightful and wonderful. Unless he shares it publicly and the other discourse that went on between them for those 4 hours, I'm content to believe he felt a closeness and intimacy with his old friends.

Newbbfan, you really need to read Dave's book written with Jon Stebbins, The Lost Beach Boy. That will give you a lot of insights into how he sees himself in the big picture. If you can't find a copy for sale, try interlibrary loan. It's a must-read, imo.

Oh god I've read that book 10 times and it definitely confirms Dave's accomplishment but only up to a point before the reunion so I'm just being hypervigilant about my favorite Beach Boy and trying to keep up with his reaction to all these complicated circumstances in histories.
Dave is the only beach boy that has read any of the papers that my students have written about Beach Boy history and so I have a particular gratitude.
And to that point, can anyone say with authority that Dave is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a beach boy? According to that book situation has never been resolved because he was not inaugurated with them and they don't add people later. But I seem to remember some performance or event where they remedied the past, and I don't know if there is an official document that confirms that he is indeed acknowledged as one of the Beach Boys Under the aegis of the Beach Boys being in the Hall of fame. Anyone have any particular insight on this?

Dave was neither invited nor acknowledged at the induction ceremony in 1988, an oversight which was rectified by The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and he was enshrined with the rest of the band in 2007.

And Dave played a concert at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Per Jon Stebbins: "I don't think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is allowed to change the official induction status of an act because of their own technical rules. Therefore, David's original 1988 snub when the BB's were inducted remains intact. However, in 2007, the Hall was nice enough to acknowledge David's importance to the BB's history and invited him there for a special day and speaking engagement. They do sell our book in the gift shop, and David is included in the Beach Boys display in the museum. In essence they have done what they can to make up for the oversight, short of changing their own rules." I read somewhere that the core band members get to decide who to invite, then someone has to pay for each inductee. So, if you're chosen to be invited, it's around 25K that somebody has to pay for each inductee. Sometimes secondary members are invited, but don't feel like paying out of their own pocket.

Bruce wasn't inducted into the Hall with the Beach Boys in '88 either. But he did join the jam session with the band afterward.
Bruce: "They (RRHOF) figured out that R & R Hall Of Fame Inductee Ron Wood (member of the Stones since 1976) was included in the Stones induction but 1965 Bruce was asked to remain at the table! I was so upset at the 1988 NYC BB induction that I went back home to Montecito and polished my Grammy!"

One thing that has just occurred to me, were Blondie or Ricky mentioned at all during the event? No. But, lessee: David was a Beach Boy from February 1962 to October 1963 and from 1997 to 1999 and 2012. Bruce was a Beach Boy from April 1965 to April 1972 and from August 1978 to present. Blondie from June 1971 to December 1973. Ricky from June 1971 to April 1975 (Including a few subsequent recording dates with BB's & Dennis). So.....in your opinion, who shoulda been inducted with the band the first time in '88, based on how many songs/records they recorded on and how long they toured with the band? One could argue that David was a founding member who was an integral part of the early surf sound, recorded on the first 4 albums/singles, and he toured with them for almost 5 years. Blondie and Ricky recorded on two studio albums and one live album and toured with the band for 2 1/2 years to almost 4 years consecutively. Bruce? You add up the studio/live albums he was on and the touring years, then arrive at your own conclusion as to whether he shoulda been inducted with the band in '88.

I see what your saying and I agree with what you say with the RRHOF. I was referring to the Grammy Awards event, whether Blondie and Ricky's names were mentioned at all...? I don't remember hearing them getting a look in, considering yes, they were an integral part of the early 70's group. I'm splitting hairs I guess, being they are not 'original' members...

No need to be sorry, Rick. I thought you meant were Blondie & Ricky acknowledged at the RRHOF. They were not mentioned in '88 or at the recent Grammy Awards. I was just throwing that 'tenure' thing out there for conjecture. And even though Sail On Sailor was sung by John Legend at the Grammy Awards a couple of weeks ago, only mentioned was the version sung by Ray Charles at the 25th, not the original sung by Blondie.

I thought David Marks’ lead guitar playing on the 2012 reunion was the best guitar playing from an original Beach Boy ever.

In the Beach Boys interviews conducted by a couple of our members here several weeks ago Dave said he really enjoyed those performances whereas he was less satisfied with how much of his guitar work they used on the radio album. I still believe we don't have an exact accounting of what precisely he performed on those songs.
And perhaps this is moving a little bit away from the Grammy tribute topic so I'll wait for instruction from the moderators. It's a bit of a tangent into the work of Dave in the band.
