After listening to the six (or two) CD sets, what are your favorite tracks? Which tracks will you revisit in the future? Any surprises?

Well, I’ll start with the Carnegie show. I enjoyed Blondie’s lead and the guitar solo on Leaving This Town. I think I like the guitar better than the organ solo on In Concert. Mike sounded fantastic during this period. Nice timbre, not nasal. Loved the intro to Do It Again. They would use it again in 1980. Of course Jumpin’ Jack Flash is terrific and a great rocker. It sure ended the show on a very high note. More to come once I get a chance to sit down and listen to the other 4 discs.

I think the show is really rocking. I think I'm not totally comfortable with Ricky's drum pattern on I get around. It's a bit busy on the verses. I'm assuming that he is on the drums for the entire set with Dennis not playing any drums?
I think don't worry baby sounds really wonderful, though I wonder if Al needed to try to imitate Brian with falsetto ,and it sounds pretty lovely though he does seem to strain on a couple of notes.
I find it just heartwarming and chilling at the same time in only with you, when Carl says that was written by Dennis and michael. And recall that in Mike's interview at the Grammys last week, he told howie "I really wish you would play that song". And Mike seem to remember it as a really wonderful collaboration. I think it might be the most beautiful beach boys song that Brian was not involved in composing.
Despite the mix of old and new material there is a strident authoritative confident tone to all the performances which make listening to the show really really wonderful.
And I appreciate the moderator is targeting specific aspects of the collection in a sort of sequence ; otherwise things get chaotic, and I do tend to learn a lot from people's evaluations reactions and commentary. Enjoying the collection in all respects by the way non-stop.

For the record though, I am a big fan of Ricky Fataar’s drumming technique.

I am taking the set slow, like Charlie Bucket with his one Wonka bar a year. So far, I really really like the live Jumpin' Jack Flash and Wild Honey. I will revisit those probably a thousand times. I also love Out in the Country Version one. I wasn't a fan of the other versions of the song that I have heard, but the up tempo instrumental is awesome.

I think just recently Mike told someone that his favorite Beach Boys era in terms of music was the early '70s. When asked why his touring version of The Beach Boys doesn't do that stuff, he said, "You gotta read the room."

Yes in fact he may have said words to that effect at the grammy interview but I don't recall. Certainly he mentioned that there were some songs on this album that he wondered why they hadn't played in concert. All I want to do is one of the most beautiful songs and Mike sang it and introduced it beautifully at the show at the Greek theater, and that was a song where most people took a bathroom break. Even today with a potentially sophisticated audience, there are people that are there, to coin a phrase, to hear Barbara ann. Wouldn't it be fantastic to see Mike and Brian and Blondie and Ricky and Al get together and do the whole two albums back to back. In fact when I was at line in the line at the Greek Theater I sort of spontaneously held Court as many people were asking questions like, who's in The Beach Boys now, or are any of them alive? And these are people who were standing in line for 45 minutes with a ticket and not an inexpensive ticket to see a show. So they came to see the legend and the myth rather than with any particular detailed knowledge of precisely what they were about to witness. I understand that and it's no problem for them but for those kinds of fans who are buying tickets, yes read the room, they're not there to hear the obscure and the arcane. quote author=" dauber" source="/post/62067/thread" timestamp="1670206391"] I find it just heartwarming and chilling at the same time in only with you, when Carl says that was written by Dennis and michael. Sounds like my wife and me -- when we saw the Beach Boys exhibit that was at the R&RHoF in 2007 (or was it 2008??), we were essentially ad-hoc curators of the exhibit, getting caught up in conversations with people explaining what some of the artifacts were.

CD 1 - CARL AND THE PASSIONS - “SO TOUGH”
ALL of the original album tracks on this release sound real good. No more hiss and muddiness that I can hear. Nice and clear.
“Carl & The Passions – So Tough” Additional Tracks (Previously Unreleased)
All This Is That (a Cappella mix - previously unreleased) Vocals only sounds fantastic. Carl Wilson at his vocal best. And Mike and Al – what a performance!
He Come Down (2022 mix - previously unreleased) Is that Brian counting in at the intro? Real good mix – the best version. This churchy song was a pre-curser to “That Same Song” On 15 Big Ones. Even has “same song” in the lyrics.
You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone (track and backing vocals) Love it. Track is revealing. Background vocals sound great. All this time and I didn’t know they were sing singing “She don’t know me.” Maybe my second favorite track on the album depending on which way the wind is blowing.
Marcella (a Cappella mix - previously unreleased) Love it. Again, revealing. This has always been my favorite song on the album, closely followed my Cuddle Up. The background parts are great, especially Dennis with the counter vocal part and Carl with his extracurricular activity in the intro and ooOOoo’s and his voice weaving in and out throughout the song. Mike with the da down down down down background part. “Marcella hey” sung by Brian as his singing voice starts to weaken. For many years after this song came out, many of the lyrics were unknown to fans. No sheet music or anything out there to reference Rieley’s words.
Make It Good (alternate mix with Intro - previously unreleased) This one (“Love is what I feel”) and the alternate mix of “Cuddle Up” are revealing and fantastic. Again, he picked the right guy to help produce the strings to these two songs. Dennis was soooo prolific and productive during this period. His songs were dropped from the Surf’s Up album but he made up for it here. The underrated “Make It Good” with Daryl Dragon’s help. His very good relationship with his wife Barbara didn’t hurt his creative during this period - he was on a roll.
Cuddle Up - If you thought the released version of Cuddle Up was mediocre, you gotta listen to this one! Clear as a bell. The alternate may even be the definitive version. My second or third favorite on the C&TP album.

I really enjoy Dennis numbers, the naked Make it good and Cuddle up, Carry me home at last in perfect condition and above all that Steamboat track, a killer! Trader 2nd section acappella makes justice to Carl. Out of the country 1st version is very good, joyful and it reminds Cottonfields' construction at the end of the number. Gimme some lovin/I need your love is really infectious and real fun. Also I enjoy all things towards All this is that (studio and live). The complete sets live at Carnegie Hall are an excellent addition to 1973 In Concert. Mike is at his best during Jumpin jack flash! I would have like a 1971 concert in the Feel Flows Boxset.

I'll keep it goin:
I really enjoy the new mix of Here She Comes. That was always one of my favorites on the album; the new mix bring so much cool stuff that was buried. It feels, to me, like more of a complete/finished song now. Something before seemed rushed or unfinished. I always thought- couldn't they do a little better? Now I see that they did.
Out in the Country version 1- I think that with a little more work this song would have worked as an instrumental. Really love it- sounds like it would fit in a movie.
I also really love Long Promised Road, but have always had one issue with the live version, and that is the guitar solo. I think that song is building up to and screaming for a more forceful solo- not an extended jam, but something with more oomf. The only live version I have heard that accomplished this is the one from Carl's solo tour. Just my two cents on that.
Can't wait to dive into more.

I don't remember feeling the same sense of intense engagement with feel flows as I do with this collection. I could just be my own weakness as a scholar, but for some reason I'm doing much more active listening to each and every track and each and every voice, and I'm finding this to be an absolutely powerful revelation in music performance history to listen to each and every voice, note, and instrument and lyric of this incredible collection.

Just a question about the "let me know" in leaving this town, just before the solo. It seems really perfect... don't you think it could be the studio part just added here?

Another strange thing. The "let the wind blow "Version.... Carl's vocal is different from the one from "in concert", but the track... evey notes of the track, and even in the guitar solo and impros are exactly the same. EVERY NOTE! Did they mix the 2 versions? Very strange...

No one reads it (the room) better. And Mike has done some deep cuts live in recent years. This does remind me of when I was a young man in the late '80s and I would go to see them live. The audience would be all Boomers wearing Hawaiian shirts, and then there would be me dressed like I'd just stepped out of the late '60s. I'm sure Mike looked at me at one concert. Perhaps he thought I was a time traveler. I was certainly a space cadet, nudge, nudge.

Just enjoying he come down in all its different manifestations here. I don't think I ever really went slowly through it and heard the lyrics and Mike's delivery but that line about quoting Christ injunction to seek ye first the kingdom Within, which becomes merged with practices of Transcendental Meditation and the Sanskrit tradition is just deeply spiritually moving and comforting.
Some Protestant midwesterners who came to CalifornIA for their destiny whose kids wound up studying Eastern religion and composing this old style Revival meeting song about meditation and Christianity and the fervor of faith is just really really remarkable.

This is my 1st post on the EH forum (actually my 2nd...I did a post in the Introduce Yourself section). I wanted to say that, while listening to Rooftop Harry, it reminded me somewhat of Love To Say Da Da. Would be very interested to know if anybody else thought the same. I wish to state that I'm NOT a huge fan of either CATP or Holland, but I DO love SOS and Leaving This Town and have for years. It's too bad the group never finished Out In The Country...very cool-sounding outtake. Also, We Got Love and Hard Times definitely should have been included on Holland. It really is incredible how many amazing songs the BB recorded that DIDN'T get included on their official albums. I'm actually still in the process of listening through the SOS box and will likely offer more opinions on the contents of this set in the near future.

Hi Longtime Lurker! Welcome to the board. I just joined two months ago myself, and lurked as long as the board was active!👍
Anyway, yeah I hear the same major 7th kinda vibe on the intro now that you mention it. I also hear God Did It (washa my sins away) on the next section, and that part also echoes the end of Smiley Wind Chimes and that section from Holidays, the marimba section (I think I have the song right?)
Hope you enjoy yourself here, and Merry Christmas season 🎄🎄
