For me, this sums up the whole SOS box. It’s nowhere near warty enough for me. All that missing material, edits of the work tapes, doctored live recordings… it feels to me as if the whole thing suffered from the kind of over-preparation and death by a million committees I’d usually associate with new releases rather than deep dive archival sets aimed at hardcore fans. Well, according to Howie, Sail On Sailor and Feel Flows wasn’t aimed at we hardcore fans. and that strategy seems to be working absolutely perfectly seeing as it’s currently… Number nothing on the Billboard 200.

The backing tracks are really beautiful. The concert is amazing. But I noticed a few things.
1.Steamboat(new remaster) It ends abruptly without fading out completely. And the sound location changes at the end.(it feels like changing from stereo to mono.) These are not on the 2000 remaster version.
2.The Beaks of Eagles (2022 edit) The "sp" sound of "spilled down the hill", the verse that was deleted in the edit, is still there.
3.California (Carnegie hall live) the intro of the slide guitar isn't same to the bootleg version.
5.Help me Rhonda (Carnegie hall live) Al sings the line "And I know it wouldn't take much time" on this version, though Dennis sings it on the bootleg version.

Original albums decent sonically. In no particular order, He Come Down remix is brilliant! Love Rooftop and Spark, Brian’s genius still there, too bad not finished songs. Fairy tale segments also brilliant, and Daddy Dear is so cool. The live stuff is amazing, and I don’t care if it is sweetened or not. To me, the star of the set is the track with BGVs for Trader. It has a very Lindsey Buckingham/Mick Fleetwood vibe. And Carl’s vocal for the same is breathtaking, pristine and sparkling. Wish there was a new mix for an alternate listening experience, not to diminish the original. My only criticism of this and the other recent sets is lack of detailed track notes. Adult daughter home for holidays requested Beach Boys Christmas music (!), and I pulled out my Ultimate Christmas CD . This has super detailed track by track notes. Wish similar had been included. All in all, another awesome set, and thanks to all that made it happen!

Regarding the song Rooftop Harry: in the comments section on Youtube there is a great recollection by engineer Barry Rudolph and working with Brian on this tune. Very interesting.

Was just thinking about this but between all the great live stuff from this box set and the previous one, I'm surprised that no one slipped in a live cover of "Okie From Muskogee". Weren't they playing that one intermittently around this time period? Considering we got *three* live versions of "Student Demonstration Time" (including "Riot In Cell Block #9"), you'd think they could have included this song at least. Not complaining though. Perhaps a recording of it will turn up on a compilation someday.

In the world of peeling back the layers and discovering more I've discovered the wonders of the Funky Pretty tracks on this set, and it only really happened when I focused on the lyrics with a lyric sheet in front of me. It’s really two different songs, the album track we’ve known for 50 years plus the revelation in the track and backing vocals track which is a whole other song. What appeared to be “She” was really so much more.

What appeared to be “She” was really so much more. Yeah, that's part of what makes these new sets fun to listen to as some of the tracks are dissected. At least the Holland album provided you with a lyric sheet, but for many years I didn't know what the hell the lyrics to some of the songs on the "Carl & The Passions" album were until one day there was a revelation and then, "Oh yeah, that's it! It fits!" I know some of us older fans were in the same boat - there was no sheet music or music books to reference for a lot of these songs, especially the album tracks. And the instrumental tracks themselves are really revealing.

Is anyone in the band playing on Out in the Country version 1, or studio guys? Quoting WillJC from here: endlessharmony.boards.net/thread/618/autobiography-don-goldberg"Brian began writing In the Country alone, opening with the line "I can't see me falling in love". Brian wrote the music for the verses and bridge, Don wrote the music for the chorus, Don changed Brian's opening line and contributed most of the other lyrics. He remembers the basic track being recorded with Brian on piano, Don and Carl on acoustic guitars and Ricky on drums, with bass, organ and the guitar intro overdubbed. Brian apparently put off continuing work on it for a long time until Don finally blew up at him, prompting Brian to sort out a date to overdub banjo, steel guitar and strings (Tandyn Almer handled the string arrangement). He says it was a Sunday, which matches the Feb 20th 1972 date. Brian, Tandyn and David Sandler directed the session. Doug Dillard played the banjo part, just like Mess of Help. Don wanted Carl to sing it, Carl wanted Brian to sing it, and Brian came up with a hair-brained scheme to feature Don singing as a guest on CATP. Vocals were done at Sunset Sound with David Sandler and Brian. Amazingly it seems like everyone was actually going along with this until Bruce hid the tape to stop it from going on the album (yeah, lots of Bruce moments here)." Fading Love Song would've been 1972, not 1973. It wasn't until decades later that Don found out about the slow organ version of Out in the Country (retitled) via bootlegs that he thinks must've been recorded later in Holland (his timelines are a bit muddled but this much is clear - the fast version with Don's lead came first)."

Was just listening to Marcella (accapella) for the 432nd time. The credits say:
Chorus vocals – Alan Jardine, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love Tag backing vocals – Alan Jardine, Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Jack Rieley, Brian Wilson
I would add Brian to the Chorus vocals credits. Listen closely at 1:00 min. in and you can hear him sing "Hey yay, Marcella" with the same voice as he sang "Marcella, hey" on the Tag backing vocals. Whatcha think? A high voice that was just starting to weaken at that point (see intro to California Saga).

A high voice that was just starting to weaken at that point (see intro to California Saga). All of the vocals in the intro are Carl and Bruce stacking different parts, believe it or not. The ultra deep bass vocal is Bruce. Those came down under the 'verse' credits because the song kind of has two choruses. Also, that mix is sped up about a quarter tone, which makes them sound a little off.

I don't doubt your findings, Will, but I hear Brian on the tag, and I also hear that same voice earlier in the choruses. Bruce is nowhere in the vocal credits.

Bruce is credited under verse backing vocals, which also counts for the intro refrain or however you want to classify it. Brian definitely doesn't sing anything outside of the tag.
