The very very high pitched vocals during the second line of “hey yeah Marcella”s sounds exactly like Carl to me. It doesn’t sound piercing enough to be Brian.

If you base your Brian vocal reference here as "piercing" or "shrill", you ain't going to hear him at all on Marcella! It's a weak vocal, not like Carl's. Like I said before, listen at 1:00 minute in and you can hear him sing "Hey yay, Marcella" with the exact same voice as he sang "Marcella, hey" on the tag backing vocals. Anybody else?

My ears hear Brian. Not saying that they are right, though.

I hear Brian too, but they can all sound like each other at times, so…

Thanks to all involved in creating this detailed sessionography!
I was curious to see Carl being credited on bass for Here She Comes. The rapid repeated descending bass runs (heard best at the start of the song) seem quite challenging.
Is it a case where the early arrangement with Blondie on bass made its way to the final version and Carl added some bass later?

If you mean the nasal higher harmony that goes from Ab4 to G4, that's both Carl and Bruce together, on the same track where they did the extra "ah-ah" backing vocals in the second verse. Elsewhere Carl's lead part is D4 to Bb3, and on the same tracks as the verse "ahhhs", Carl sings F4 to Eb4 and Bruce sings Bb3 to G3. "Marcella hey" in the tag is Carl. Jack sings "hey Marcella" as a harmony below on the same track. Brian's part, completely omitted from the original mix, is him singing "ooh, I need you Jenny" and a whole load of other improvised lines, all ending in "Jenny", with that word doubled on another track. Not sure what the story behind that is.

Carl told a visitor to the studio in Holland that he played that bass part. Most likely scenario, he and Blondie just swapped bass and guitar duties for the later takes, which have a completely different approach. If you listen to any live performance of the song from '72 with Blondie on bass, he plays it like the early attempts and never replicates that lick.

Not sure what the story behind that is. I thought it'd already been established that "Marcella hey" in the tag was Brian, so I tied that voice to "Hey Marcella" in the chorus. Looks like I have some work to do in the 'Vocals Only' thread! endlessharmony.boards.net/thread/1845/beach-boys-definitive-vocals-thread Thanks, Will.

In my experience, transition from a standard six- (or 12-) string guitar to a bass is pretty easy. The strings on a bass are the same as the first four on a regular guitar, just an octave lower, so it wouldn't surprise me that a guitarist as skilled as Carl could do that.

Pretty nifty work from Carl all the same. A guitarist would have recourse to one or more open strings -- on an electric bass, that three-note figure is several frets up the neck (speaking as a rank amateur here).

Just had a chuckle-moment while driving home… 😁
I had just started disc 5 of the SOS box set. Listen carefully to the a capella mix of Mess Of Help.
at 54-55 seconds, just after the line “I need a call for my phone will ring” you hear Brian singing “ting-a-ling” in the background.
Love these little tidbits of Brian’s humor.

Do we now have an idea why no outtakes from "Leaving this town" appear on the box ? I expected at least the instrumental version...
There were no tapes available ?
