I thought it was interesting that both Sound of Free and We Got Love on the Brother Rarities set were sourced from vinyl, with SOF being sourced from the 1981 BRIAN WILSON/BEACH BOYS RARITIES LP as the pop in the left channel is at the same place on both that LP and the Brother tracks. I know that when preparing the MIC boxset, Alan told me they were able to get the 45 master for SOF from Abbey Road as a copy of the final mix was not in the Brother tape vault. The mono mix of Lady is a fold down from the stereo mix and not a special mono remix.
I actually tried to make a SOF/LADY 45 for a mix CD I was making for myself, but the original stereo version of LADY on the Feel Flows box is out of phase so the fold down to mono sounds awful.

There’s only one version of We Got Love. The short edit is a bootleggers creation I believe There’s no such thing as a bootleggers creation of We Got Love. The original version / edit (the shorter one) of WGL as it was intended for Holland (last track on side A) can be found on the first run of all October 72 testpressings. I have the Dutch and UK one, and can confirm it’s the ‘short’ version. For the early (2nd) German repressing of the first issue WEA (who had just taken over distribution from Kinney) erroneously took the wrong copy from the shelfs and released the rejected version with WGL on side A. I have this one as well, and indeed it’s the same version as on the testpressings. The first bootlegs with WGL were released in the 80ies on vinyl. I have 2 LP-boots that contain WGL - a UK/Neth and a German one. Interesting enough both comtain a little blip in the first second of the song, indicating it came from the same source. But otherwise those bootlegged versions are identical to the original version. In the 90ies that same WGL (with blip in the intro) appeared on a bunch of bootleg-CD’s. In 2016 Acoustic Sounds / Analogue productions reissued Holland both on 2LP and SACD store.acousticsounds.com/d/95596/The_Beach_Boys-Holland-200_Gram_Vinyl_RecordBoth contain WGL as a bonus cut. And both versions are the longer edit, with the refrain repeated several more times befor the fade out (with lots of similarities with the live version btw). The length of the tracks looks similar to the one mentioned on the Brother Discs. Hence my assumption these 2 are the same. In short: the short version was bootlegged, but not created. my mistake, you are, of course, correct. It’s interesting though, apparently when they were preparing the analog productions and HDTracks Holland, they included We Got Love” because it was simply just… on the master. The full 5:55 edit. Read that in an interview with Kevin Gray, but I can’t seem to find it now

Regardless of the length, there is surely no way We Got Love could ever have been seriously considered for release as a single. It's just about the most run-of-the-mill pedestrian track the Beach Boys recorded throughout the early 1970s. Dropping it from Holland was a wise move.

Agree, but I do like the arrangement that was used for the live album. It rocks way more than the limp studio version.

We Got Love, as per the Master, presented on the AP edition, sounds really “narrow” in terms of stereo.
It’s not mono, as you get a vague hint of space/air beyond the speakers, but doesn’t seem designed for stereo - almost like it’s an initial or working mix, that never got finished, or perhaps was pulled together for use in some kinda broadcast (eg, a radio or tv show).

I'm thhhinking what's on the three CDs isn't necessarily final mixes/masters, thus those two tracks were likely just what someone at Capitol had on hand at the time? i.e. if they'd actually been added to their respective album re-releases, they probably would've gotten the masters or, in some cases, remixed them. Also, I didn't think "Sound of Free" and "We Got Love" from these specific had gotten around yet? We're still missing some tracks.

Was the master on the original erroneous vinyl release in true stereo?

Wow, okay, I stand corrected. So Alan was able to find a 1/4" mono master of the song around the time of MIC. I think the brightness and the vocal distortion on the Feel Flows version had me convinced they were still using a vinyl source. Pretty sad that the multis are lost, as I quite enjoy "Sound of Free" and would love to hear it in stereo one day.

Yet another 'what have they done there??' moment.

SOF on MIC sounded like a needle drop, which is why I asked about it. Glad (as always) that Alan had the answer. Listen to these side by side. The MIC version sounds great (for the low-fi sound of the original) where some extra editing went on in the FF version. The edit after the intro is really noticeable with headphones on.

The "Johnny Carson" one with the guitar intro is weird. Its a lot like the early version of "Goin' On" with the drum break. Its a weird random thing that doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the song.

Thanks, that's very helpful. When I made my compilation, I just left out the missing songs, but now I'm going to redo it with these sources. However, can you tell me what are the best sources of the single versions of "Suzie Cincinatti" and "California Saga" - other than original vinyl singles?

Don't know about "Susie Cincinnati," but for "California" probably Greatest Hits Vol. 3: The Best of the Brother Years. The sound won't be great, but certainly better than how it sounded on Ten Years of Harmony; I'm guessing there never was a good sounding master of it. I'm guessing that's why both Good Vibrations and Made in California used the album version and why the Sirius XM channel favors same.

The Jack Reilly vocal version is another that's 'out there'. Wow, I'd choose 4th of July over Al's cheezy Feet...

The Jack Reilly vocal version is another that's 'out there'. Wow, I'd choose 4th of July over Al's cheezy Feet... 4th Of July and Live Again were pulled by Dennis because Carl and he got into fight over the SURF'S UP LP. Carl wanted to do the logical and correct thing and end the LP with Brian's three songs, with Surf's Up being the last cut. Dennis wanted Live Again to end the LP. After going round and round, Dennis finally said he was pulling his tunes from the LP. This happened at the same time Mike and Al were complaining about Wilson brother tunes taking up too much of the LP. Both wanted Loop De Loop as part of the final track listing.

I really like this version of TYOH. If you haven't gotten it, get it. Sound quality is amazing.

I recently found in a record show this "new" boxset (december 2022) "The Beach Boys - Brother Rarities (1969-1976)". This was very helpful to complete my missing tracks, except Let's put our hearts together (early mix - Al lead) : Love Is A Woman mislabelled ?)
"The Beach Boys - Brother Rarities (1969-1976) Captain Acid Remaster
Hi Beach Boys fans,
Let`s have the bad news first. This fantastic collection of outtakes was only ever shared as lossy. I have found some of the tracks as lossless, on some other sources (and replaced the files), but the rest is still lossy. So now we have 4 lossy on first disc, 11 lossy on second disc, 8 lossy on third disc. I worked on those files and did my best to make it a bit better. Great help was iZotope RX 9 plugin "Spectral Recovery". I have also done some phase and level correction and in the end very gentle new EQ.All other tracks were remastered too. So, untill we get this from the original source, it is the best we have. Also, i have added two bonus tracks at the end of disc three.
Lossless tracks are: CD 01 - 01,02,04,06,07,08,09,10,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 CD 02 - 01,02,03,06,07,08,09,10,15,16,18,19,21,23 CD 03 - 02,05,06,10,13
Enjoy
