If we count overdubbing sessions, then who knows what the answer would be haha. But if we could just narrow it down to a session where Hal was present where Brian said, 'Nah forget it, thank you gentlemen' after only twenty minutes.

Thinking about the Hal Blaine quote about Brian recording the Wrecking Crew 'for 20 minutes' sometimes, and other times 'four or five or six hours...', and it got me to wondering, do we have any idea what the shortest session Brian ever conducted was? I've always felt that '20 minute session' Hal talked about was just an exaggeration, but who knows? I'm sure we will never have a definite answer, but so far do we know what's been logged as their shortest session? Might be the December 22nd 1965 session for Billy Strange's 12-string overdub on "SJB". Let the man himself tell the tale: "I had just gotten a divorce, and I had my son one day a month. Brian called me on that Sunday. I had gone to pick up my son, and he tracked me down at my ex-wife's house in the Hollywood Hills. He said, 'You gotta come to Western 3 right now and listen to this right now and see if there's something you can do on it'. I said, 'I have my son, and I don't have a guitar.' He said, 'Don't worry about it.' So we went there, and he played it for me. It was 'Sloop John B.' He said 'What I need is an electric 12-string guitar solo right here.' I said, 'Brian, I don't even own an electric 12-string.' 'So he called Glenn Wallichs at home, the owner of Wallichs Music City and he sent somebody down to the music store. [Wallichs was one of the founders of Capitol Records; his store was located on the northwest corner of Sunset and Vine] They opened the store up, got a Fender 12-string and a Fender Twin amplifier, brought it to the studio. I tuned it up. I made one pass at this thing, it was either eight or sixteen bars, and Brian was happy with it. He said 'That's it.' He reached into his pocket and pulled out a wad of bills and gave me $500 and said 'Don't forget to take your guitar and amplifier.' That's the kind of guy he was." Small snag with Billy's recollection: 12/22 in 1965 was a Wednesday. Several other snags with his story which add to the richness of the tapestry of life: 1. Billy owned a 12-string by that point. Probably more than one. 2. His son remembers it being a Mosrite (and remembered other details about the day that ring true) 3. The Sloop John B overdub doesn't use an amplifier 4. It's not a solo. 5. He'd played on the basic track and pretty much just doubled what he did there, and then added a harmony.

Might be the December 22nd 1965 session for Billy Strange's 12-string overdub on "SJB". That was my first thought too. But the fact that Brian got Billy to listen to the rough recording first before ordering and getting the 12-string to make the overdub made me feel the "session" might have been too long to qualify. Let's not forget that Billy also doubled his original part from the basic as they dubbed down to mono on a fresh tape. This could have taken potentially many takes. His harmony overdub also took a few takes. (He was still recovering from a pretty bad hand injury.)

In 1973 Carl announced that Smile would be released soon and gave to Melody Maker a tracklist of the album. Does anyone have the tracklist from this article? It did interesting things like list several songs under the Heroes and Villains moniker.

It's on 10452, unreleased albums page.

Still interesting/telling to me that they had ample resources to throw an album together in 1972 and call it Smile, but still were inclined to throw their hands up after initial preparation and multiple announcements, surrendering their advance. Almost definitely more to the story on the band side that we'll never hear -- I wonder if this was the when it was made clear to most of the group that Brian was ultimately firm against any release of the material and that his dispute wasn't with certain specific tracks or participating in additional recording.

How about the dogs barking session for PS - or did Louie need a second pass that’s still in the archives?

I recently scored a promo copy of "Sail On Sailor" c/w "Only With You." And I didn't notice until I looked at that single that "Only With You" is published by Wilojarston. Now...the "ston" part was no longer in the band at that time. Was Bruce still collecting on new Beach Boys publishing during the time he wasn't in the band?

There's only 17 Wilojarston compositions in ASCAP -- I don't know the mechanics of the agreement, but they obviously needed some kind of auxiliary publishing outlet for some specific purpose, generally Beach Boys co-writing with outside folks, I think? I can't imagine Bruce got too big of a slice of that pie anyway, but I'm sure continuing to use Wilojarston even if Bruce wasn't in the band was more convenient than starting another company specifically to exclude him?

During the recording of Holland, Dennis decided to stay in the Canary Islands. Does anybody which island he stayed on and where?

Please, who was/is "The Correct Perspective"? Someone who seems to have been full of the soft stuff. See Remember the Zoo on this page. Maybe they've been unmasked since then...

I am none the wiser but I will say that "The Correct Perspective" was the absolute highlight of an already enjoyable read. I asked the editor once and got given a charming if fanciful response.

The version of Kokomo I have in Spanish sounds sped up. Is that the way it was on the CD single? I only got it from someone a long time ago as an mp3, and am wondering if a normal speed version exists.

Who played lead guitar on the Beach Boys' version of Miserlou? That would be Carl Dean Wilson.

This and this must be the CD single at the slower speed. Does anyone know better?
