Thanks Little Leila - I have the UK version of the CD you mentioned. My confusion seems to have arose over the fact that the album version of Sumahama that I have is from the L.A. Light Album "2fer" CD...and it's the same length as the aforementioned version (4:32). Wiki says that the original album version is 4:07 in length, but that on subsequent CD releases this original version wasn't used...which now begs the question of where I can find the original album version of Sumahama?! The 1989 UK CBS Collectors Choice CD re-issue of L.A. Light Album includes a Sumahama which runs to 4:08 (per my CD player). It's this edition (Discogs incorrectly states 4:28).
The 1989 US Caribou CD re-issue from a few months later includes a Sumahama running to 4:33.

Great stuff CCF and thanks for checking! Seems likely the original version of Sumahama was last released was on the CBS version.

The U.K. version of that CD suffered something like CD rot – the discs became badly discoloured within a few years. The company offered a like-for-like trade-in: I was one of those who took them up on the offer. But it never occurred to me to check whether the replacement disc was exactly the same as the original!

This reminds me of a project I did many many years ago when I compiled a series of CD's with different mixes of (non) album tracks. I'm at work right now and don't have the specifics. But I'm sure there was also a so-called 'waves'-mix of Sumahama that was only released on a Japanese compilation of sampler LP. I think it's mentioned in Brad Elliott's Surf's Up book.

Yes, on pp. 331 and 332 in my copy: "Sumahama (version two)" is track 5 of side 1 of the LP Tropical Sounds (CBS-Sony YAPC 133; Japan, Summer 1979): "This Japanese sampler is unique in that it includes an alternate, and otherwise unreleased, mix of Sumahama. Unlike the commercially released version, the song here features the sounds of breaking waves in several places and ends with approximately 20 seconds of wave sounds. No explanation is yet available for this oddity." Ah, this must be the one:

Is this second version the ‘80s remix that you refer to at Bellagio? In this world of delux issues, I’ll take both along with the associated out takes. I had assumed that the original version is the one that people have heard and the ‘80s one maybe not?

Oh no, both have been circulating for decades, with slightly different track listings. My preferred version is the one in which "Viggie" has a prominent ocarina.

Don’t know how this recording came about. I never knew he recorded this song let alone it charted in early 1969. At least in record world. Never did i know of this.

Don’t know how this recording came about. I never knew he recorded this song let alone it charted in early 1969. At least in record world. Never did i know of this. News to me too! The complete album of that title is here: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lSI8P8KMEOp_MbKetAhbTzLFBTkz2b9TAHere's an enthusiastic review of it from 2019 by dj_stosh: "This is the type of album that I might casually pick up for fifty cents, probably at a yard sale, not really even thinking about it until I finally get around to listening to it a few days or weeks later. In this case, I should have paid more attention, because the two Hugo Montenegro albums that I already had were both stellar. These were 'Others by Brothers' and the soundtrack to 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.' In both cases I was amazed at how much I enjoyed the music all the way through, and 'Good Vibrations' is no exception. First, I never thought I would hear a cover of 'Good Vibrations' to rival Psychic TV's, but now I have. Hugo's is less creepy, but nonetheless exceptional. As the album plays through, the arrangements really come to the fore, and the instrumentation constantly surprised me. Some might find the endlessly peppy Beach Boy style vocals a bit cloying, but these singers are singing their lungs out. It's a bit like High Llamas on steroids. Everywhere you turn there are heavenly harmonies floating by, delicate guitars being plucked, trumpets being tastefully blasted, and harpsichords weaving melodic lines. Snappy bass gives many of the songs a highly groovy edge. Listening to this is hard to describe, but it transports me to a different time and place and puts a smile on my face. Who would have thought that the theme from Rosemary's Baby could actually be improved by being infused with Beach Boys harmonies? I hope the other HM albums are this good, because I plan to keep on buying them based on my experiences thus far." [ Source]

I completely forgot about whether or not this was discussed but I would love to know information on Sweet Mountain since I just rediscovered it and it’s one of my favorite songs now. So much Moog and wonderful harmonies!

Based on a song David Sandler wrote before he came to LA, called "Standing Tall".

So much Moog and wonderful harmonies! I think it's the only song from the American Spring album that's been released to streaming.
Happy to be proven wrong.
If I'm right, it highlights the need for a decent reissue … let's have the Super Deluxe treatment!

Unfortunately, after doing research, that certainly is the case. However, I think we all owe Franz Ferdinand a huge thanks for letting at least ONE track get put out to streaming! Seeing that they skipped over the 50th anniversary date though, when will the deluxe edition happen now :/

And in turn, Sandler was inspired to record Standin' Tall after his initial meeting with Brian in early 1970. There's a keyboard copping the Wouldn't It Be Nice intro riff in the fade.
