Lazy Lizzie. Who is that singing alongside Brian during the final chorus (3:13 onwards)? It doesn't sound like any of the Beach Boys.

According to the tracksheet, 'Danny Tony', probably a leftover of this originally being a production for another artist. The high harmony is Danny Hutton and the 'Tony' might be Tony Joe White (who opened for Three Dog Night a couple of times), if not a random friend or some other artist whose name hasn't occurred yet. Brian isn't singing there.

Imagine Brian Wilson agreeing to write a song for you. You're geeked the fuck out. He calls you up a couple weeks later. You rush to his house and he hands you an acetate.
You speed home even faster.
You put the acetate on the turntable.
"Lazy Lizzie" starts playing.

Well, that's the problem right there, Runners. You were moving too fast. To get fully into "LL" you've got to slow down in your car and pull to the curb... :-)

I've always liked Lazy Lizzie. Shoot me. Me too. I know the lyric is 'problematic' (God I hate that word) but, sod it, it's catchy, Brian is clearly enjoying himself singing it and there is a real drive to the track that was missing from much of their music at the time.

Another question (and apologises if this has already been discussed elsewhere):
Does anyone know why the proposed bonus tracks on the Reprise-era 2-fer CDs were scrapped? Has an official reason ever been given?
Also, were there ever any bonus tracks planned for the other two 2-fer CDs (MIU/LA and KTSA/BB '85)?

These bonus tracks seem to come from an earlier iteration of the Reprise Reissues. Judging by the notes, these were planned as standalone CD and Vinyl reissues. I'd imagine some suit at Capitol had the numbers crunched and told them it wouldn't be worth the cost to do that sort of reissue campaign. So they went with another round of twofers, most of which which physically couldn't fit bonus tracks (Sunflower/Surf's Up and 15 Big Ones/Love You both come in only a few minutes under the limit for an audio CD.) This is just speculation and inference though. I'd be open to someone with more concrete information correcting me.

I suppose, given that CATP/Holland was split over two CDs, they could have issued Sunflower/Surf's Up and 15 BO/Love You as 2-CD twofers also. But, as you say, cost was likely a factor.

We have to remember that this can be a matter of diminishing returns. You are asking people to jump into another full collection, that started with LPs, then 8-tracks, then cassettes, then CDs, so you already own the tracks for your own personal use, but this was before you had turntables where you could convert to an mp3 storage device. So a two-fer saved the fans the aggravation of doing the work, themselves. I’m a fool; I bought them all, often in stores where they had Nintendo games for my kids, and figured I may as well treat myself with a “new toy” while I was getting them new games. 😂

To my ears, they sound much better than any of the mixes or remasters that have come since. They're still almost always my go-to choice whenever I want to listen to a Beach Boys album on CD.

TM Song. Who is saying which lines during the opening argument section? For the life of me I can't figure it out.
(Oh, and just how amazing is the TM Song backing track!)

It's Brian, Mike, Al and Stan Love. Mike's driven his car onto Brian's lawn, Stan and Al are the onlookers. You're welcome for the scientific analysis.

I still say it's Dennis on the really gruff voice ("I'm gonna call the police!"), and possibly Brian that does the ("I saw the whole thing, and you're...") voice.

I still say it's Dennis on the really gruff voice ("I'm gonna call the police!"), and possibly Brian that does the ("I saw the whole thing, and you're...") voice. Craig, don't make me drive my car onto YOUR lawn. For what it's worth, the original sleeve credits the background vocals on that song to Brian, Mike and Al... which I can only really interpret as the argument if there's any kernel of truth there, because all of the Beach Boys including Carl and Dennis sing the backing vocals on the song itself. The 'characters' don't make a lot of sense if Dennis is in the mix as well. Here's a transcription of the legible parts of the conversation as I hear it (I admit that doing this was a little unhinged) - Brian: …my front lawn with your car! Stan: Listen! Listen! Mike: I’m in a driveway!! Stan: Hey! Mike: Whaddya talkin’ about “lawn”?! Stan: I saw the whole thing – [splice] Brian: Hey, you!! Mike: Hey, what? Brian: Will you – will you get off my front lawn with that car?! Mike: Ehhh, shut up. Brian: What are you doin’!? Al: Hey, you can’t talk to him like that. Stan: Hey, what’s goin’ on? Brian: I’m gonna call the police. Mike: What are you talkin’- Stan: Hey, listen, I saw the whole thing, and you’re- Mike: YOU keep outta it!! [fight ensues] Mike: Oh, why don’t you go arrest me too. Al: What’s going on here?

BTW, the dialog is out-of-order as it appears on the record...the whole conversation/argument seems to start in the middle, with one dude complaining about the other's car on his lawn. Maybe they ran out of tape, and started over at the top, but didn't bother editing it properly...?

Yeah, it kinda sounds like they chopped two different takes together..? Starts in progress, there's a tape splice, then the scenario basically starts over.

I offer the "TM Song" argument as evidence that The Beach Boys should not be allowed to act. (Except maybe Mike, and even then, he's seriously overdoing it here!)

Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson had already offered conclusive evidence that Brian is without question the single worst actor on the face of the planet. I've heard better line-readings at school nativities.
