It's Brian, Mike, Al and Stan Love. Mike's driven his car onto Brian's lawn, Stan and Al are the onlookers. You're welcome for the scientific analysis. I still say it's Dennis on the really gruff voice ("I'm gonna call the police!"), and possibly Brian that does the ("I saw the whole thing, and you're...") voice. Nah, that's Brian all the way saying, "I'm gonna call the police!" Never knew Stan Love was involved in the argument. WillJC, how do you know these things? For years, my friends and I used these 'fight' lines whenever we'd disagree. I still tell my coworkers "I'm gonna call the police" when there are minor infractions. Good Hawthorne humor.....

I love tm song and the whole corny argument. I drove home from Michigan on Monday (to Wisconsin) and played several BB’s records on my iPod (full of files from my cd collection) played the 15 BO/ love you 2 fer and I still think 15BO has plenty of gems. In any case Tm was the flip side to the Rock and Roll music 45 and I thought it was funny upon first listen in the 70’s and I still think it’s funny. It’s Brian being Brian in a good way.

It’s Brian being Brian in a good way. Perfect description. Hey, if we're talking bad acting, we can't forget this:

Brian is best when spontaneous and dead-pan:

And don't forget this. I love how Brian has about four or five separate lines in the scene where John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd first come over to his bed and he just blurts them all out as if they're one continuous sentence.

Has the 2016 second edition of Charles L. Granata’s book about the making of Pet Sounds ever been available in physical format or is it only obtainable in e-book form?

From what I've seen, a lot of folks seem to prefer the Smile version of "Our Prayer" over the 20/20 version (which is obviously the same version with some 1968 overdubs). Even Made in California used a stereo mix of the earlier, non-overdubbed version. Is there a reason for this?

In the Sail On podcast, Wyatt mentions how The Beach Boys have a ton of Carnival-esque/Amusement Park type songs. I'm trying to come up with a comprehensive list of all the songs that would fit into that theme. So far I have:
1. County Fair 2. Amusement Parks USA 3. Carnival (Over The Waves/Sobra Las Olas) 4. Palisades Park 4 1/2. the carnival-esque section of the bridge on Here Today
Let me know if anyone can think of any others.

Craig, don't make me drive my car onto YOUR lawn. For what it's worth, the original sleeve credits the background vocals on that song to Brian, Mike and Al... which I can only really interpret as the argument if there's any kernel of truth there, because all of the Beach Boys including Carl and Dennis sing the backing vocals on the song itself. The 'characters' don't make a lot of sense if Dennis is in the mix as well. Here's a transcription of the legible parts of the conversation as I hear it (I admit that doing this was a little unhinged) - Brian: …my front lawn with your car! Stan: Listen! Listen! Mike: I’m in a driveway!! Stan: Hey! Mike: Whaddya talkin’ about “lawn”?! Stan: I saw the whole thing – [splice] Brian: Hey, you!! Mike: Hey, what? Brian: Will you – will you get off my front lawn with that car?! Mike: Ehhh, shut up. Brian: What are you doin’!? Al: Hey, you can’t talk to him like that. Stan: Hey, what’s goin’ on? Brian: I’m gonna call the police. Mike: What are you talkin’- Stan: Hey, listen, I saw the whole thing, and you’re- Mike: YOU keep outta it!! [fight ensues] Mike: Oh, why don’t you go arrest me too. Al: What’s going on here? Thanks for this. I've always loved TM Song; I wish there was just the song available. The fight bit seems like an attempt to recreate the spoken word bits from their early albums. I'm sure they enjoyed doing it. Maybe this is a hot take, but TM Song > Transcendental Meditation. I don't think Transcendental Meditation is bad (it's co-ool!), just doesn't fit in with the rest of the Friends vibe. TM Song is pure Brian quirkiness and one of the tracks on 15BO that highlights what will come from Brian on Love You.

Compare the "I'm gonna call the police!" voice to Dennis' voice on, say, the Good Morning America interview clip, where he says, "No they don't - they go to bed early!". And point me to a clip where Brian ever sounded THAT hoarse! Back then, Brian tended to sound much higher-pitched when talking, despite his often gruff singing approach - which, about half the time, was not actually gruff at all. I think people tend to forget that, 'cause they just remember it as being an overall gruff-sounding time for him. But listen to the timbre of his speaking voice on, say, the Mike Douglas show: (listen mostly to the interview, like when he's talking about TM and his mantra, not just the part when he's singing. And, listen to the tag of IT'S OK, where Brian is singing "Tit, tit!" behind Dennis' "Find a ride" and Carl's "In the sum, sum, summertime". To me, he sounds almost exactly like the "I saw the whole thing, and you're..." voice. Especially the way he drags "thing" over two syllables.

The "Come one / Come on / Come o-o-on" section of LOVE REMEMBERS ME is another example of a shouty, hoarse Dennis, like the "I'm gonna call the police!" voice.

True enough-Brian’s voice on those albums is not really “gruff”-he actually sings high just not in the beautiful falsetto voice of 1966. I think the gruff legend developed because people did not know who sang what on those albums. People used to think that was Brian singing Mona! Obviously it is Dennis with the “gruff” voice. Brian’s once great voice sounds damaged but not gruff

Sure, that voice is exaggerated, as is Mike's voice in that "skit" ("Awwwww, shaddup!"). But whenever Brian's adopted a silly, comic voice, it's actually been exaggeratedly high, not gruff - e.g., the Pied Piper of Mt. Vernon and the elf of "Child Of Winter". Much easier for me to believe that the "gonna call the police" voice is the same voice that sings MONA and the course, rough harmony on HONKIN' DOWN THE HIGHWAY (i.e, classic late '70s Dennis)...just exaggerated.

Yeah I think 1970s but lots of musicians smoked in that period-seems like almost all 60s British bands did! Certainly the Fab Four smoked like chimneys and continued to into the 1970s. I think Lennon was a smoker till he died
