So major that it went gold (500K units) only four months after release in the U.S. Might even be close to platinum since its release in 1993. The Boys planned an "Unplugged" tour around the release of the box, even conducted rehearsals for it, but ended up doing only a handful of dates. There's something in there for hard core and average fans alike. The 5th 'bonus" disc contains some cool stuff! Really? That would’ve been really cool if they went through with doing a full unplugged tour! If I were alive during that time period I sure as heck would’ve bought tickets! I got to see one in the Philadelphia area. At the Valley Forge Music Fair in Devon, PA. There is a boot floating about somewhere. A New York City one too. Great shows, by the way!

Games Two Can Play is a mystery to me... that one sounds like it’s all Brian... is that correct? Even the bass...

Fyi Games two can play and HELP is on the way are both 1977 mixes prepared for Adult Child. I don’t believe there is an original 1969 mix of games, and the 1970 mix of help is still unreleased. San Miguel is a 1969 mix. Not sure about pay, but it’s most likely the 1970 mix. Other than isolated incidents, they really didn’t start doing a lot of remixing until post Pet Sounds box in 97.

That’s a shame about H.E.L.P. I’m ok not having the original mix of Games Two Can Play, since the Adult/Child mix is pretty good aside from the drums.

I don’t believe there is an original mix of games. I believe the first mix they made was in 77. The 70 mix of help is on a lot of bootlegs, and its... very rough. There is a reason they remixed it in 77, because clearly the original was not meant for release. Pretty sure that all of these Will be remixed on FF, with the possible exception of games

One instance of the promotion Capitol put behind the 1993 box set - which garnered stellar reviews on release - was that on August 5th that year they dumped a couple of hundred tons of sand on the Tower parking lot and had the band play a short set. The set, which was one of the first multi CD career spanning boxes, was carefully (for the time) curated: it most definitely wasn't just flung together. For one thing, all the 60s singles originally released in mono were presented so on the box. Leading fans of the day were consulted: Bob Hanes, Timothy White, Peter Reum, Domenic Priore, Lee Dempsey, Ken Sharp, Elliot Kendall, Gary Gold,, Don Cunningham, Neal Umphred, Brad Rosenberger, Brian Gari, Alan Boyd, Ray Lawlor, Ed Mandelbaum, Mike Grant, Roy Gudge, Ken Barnes, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Rodney Bingenheimer, Les Chan, Rick Edgil, Peter Fortnatale, Wayne Johnson, Lauri Klobas, Harvey Kubernick, Alice Lillie, Stephan McParland, Gary Nichamin, Darian Sahanaja, Gene Sculatti, Craig Slowinski, Goran Tannfelt, Garry Trudeau, Paul Williams, Dwight Whikehart, Jerry Weiss, Brad Eliott.

I stand corrected: "Pay" is indeed a Wilson/Jardine composition.

I stand corrected: "Pay" is indeed a Wilson/Jardine composition. I was as surprised as you are tbh. Now the question is, what was Jardine‘s contributions? My guess is the lyrics and the chord progressions (particularly the “I like spending my money” sections, since the intro was later used in “Marcella” and the verse chord progression was used in the Brian composed “All Dressed Up For School”).

It's always sounded like a harmonica to me too. No doubt. That’s strange... It always sounded like trumpets to me. I’ve listened to stuff like Good Time, Susie Cincinnati, Wild Situation, etc. Those have harmonicas and you could easily identify them as such. Maybe it was an audio trick or maybe the way it was mixed. Regardless it’s fascinating to know it’s a harmonica! Going back over my documentation and doing some more serious listening, I actually do think it's possible that it's trumpets -- with straight mutes (or possibly harmon mutes), in pairs, and doubled with overdub. The tracksheet seems to indicate "horns" though sometimes those tracksheets were written up later. The tracksheet also indicated that both Carl and Al played guitar. There are two bass parts, it's a little unclear if they were both overdubbed or not. There's some sort of pickup that's organ, another drum (probably for the intro) and another bass. If those are in fact trumpets, I'd expect there's an AFM blank for their time, but I don't remember anything like that. Someone back me up, here.

For the two bass parts, seeing that I originally thought Al played bass, now based on that info, I think Brian played bass and overdubbed it, then mixed the two real low in the mix or something. Could be wrong.

My best guesses for the trumpet players on Pay are Chuck Findley & Ollie Mitchell, mainly because they were used most often.

Could be wrong. From the documentation I would posit that the drums, two guitars, piano, and first bass were live. I'm not sure that bass playing sounds like Brian. Could be Daryl or potentially Bruce. The piano playing sounds a little too in the pocket to be Brian, too, but who can say. The muted trumpets took over some real estate on the overdubbed bass track -- not sure if there was a reduction there or if they were just punched in. Two organ overdubs are not indicated in the documentation but sounds like either two instances of Baldwin or Baldwin and Hammond. And of course the alarm clock is on there too.

Wait when was Pay recorded again? With the power of knowledge if anything we know was recorded with Daryl on the same day then it’d be likely. Otherwise, yeah I should’ve mentioned Bruce, I forgot about him for a while there.
So there’s two possible outcomes:
Brian on piano, Bruce on bass Bruce on piano, Brian on bass
And what about the overdubbed bass? What if Bruce left early (oh wait they recorded Carnival the same day didn’t they...)

It was the same day as Carnival, I’m assuming. So I’m sure the drums and bass are probably the same people (that being Dennis, and well, whoever played bass on Pay).

Never thought about that. Now that I think of it, the drums sound exactly like the drums in Good Time!!

Had a listen at Good Time & I Just Got My Pay. Yep! I strongly believe that Dennis Dragon might’ve played drums on both, since the former had been quite well documented in the past.

Who are the string players on Take A Load Off Your Feet?
EDIT: And from my understanding they’re violas?
