You can hear a trumpet sounding thing during the verses iirc.

I think that's an organ. Doubtless the box set will enlighten us. 🙂

I might have to listen to the track again. Once again, I blame the 1993 box set for the bad mixing just as much as I did for the way San Miguel was mixed.

Definitely no trumpets on IJGMP.

Definitely no trumpets on IJGMP. This proves my theory that the good vibrations box set was probably just done for the money and no thought was given for a good mix of the unreleased and rare stuff...

Had another listen. It does sound a bit of a mix of a trumpet and organ. There was a horn setting on organs iirc?

I don't remember, but I'm not sure that there were a lot of remixes done for the GV set. San Mig and IJGMP might have been existing mixes done circa the time of the recording.

The horn sounding instrument during the verses after the boys sing the first “I just got my pay” at the beginning of the song. The verses sung by Mike. He sings about socking the dough or something.

It starts 17 seconds into the track.

I’m fairly new to some of this stuff. You’d think a good remixing could do these tracks justice. Even more insulting was that San Miguel had already been released!

As far as I know, these are probably the original mixes prepared by Steve Desper back in 1969-70. San Miguel was slated for the Last Capitol Album and I Just Got My Pay was slated for Add Some Music (Sunflower). Maybe Stephen will address your questions.

It's always sounded like a harmonica to me too. No doubt. That’s strange... It always sounded like trumpets to me. I’ve listened to stuff like Good Time, Susie Cincinnati, Wild Situation, etc. Those have harmonicas and you could easily identify them as such. Maybe it was an audio trick or maybe the way it was mixed. Regardless it’s fascinating to know it’s a harmonica!

I am quite happy leaving them as they were meant to be heard.

OK that’s a good point. So my guess is that maybe when they overdubbed some of those instruments that they probably buried it in the mix to focus on the other instruments. I know that there was a Moog part in Marcella that Jack Rieley said he was disappointed that it wasn’t brought up higher in the mix, same with that zither.

Not so. That box was a major release and treated as such. How major of a release was it? So major that it went gold (500K units) only four months after release in the U.S. Might even be close to platinum since its release in 1993. The Boys planned an "Unplugged" tour around the release of the box and even conducted rehearsals for it, but ended up doing only a handful of dates. There's something in the for average and hardcore fans alike. The 5th 'bonus" disc contains some cool stuff!

I am sure that they were experimenting with different sounds. The same way Desper got that drum sound on Do It Again.

That would’ve been really cool if they went through with doing a full unplugged tour! If I were alive during that time period I sure as heck would’ve bought tickets!

Back to my original question, then, this was my guess for the personnel list for I Just Got My Pay. With acknowledgment to the harmonica:
Electric Guitar: Carl Wilson Piano: Brian Wilson Harmonica: Brian Wilson Harmonium: Brian Wilson or Bruce Johnston? Bass: Al Jardine Drums: Dennis Wilson Clock used was probably Brian’s. Handclaps are by group. The clank is unknown. I used to think it was a triangle, but a triangle doesn’t make that kind of sound you hear, so idk.
