The topic of best LP cover got me thinking about best group photo. I don't know what it says about me and my leanings, but this has been and will always be my favorite photo of The Beach Boys:

You know the story behind that photo, don'tcha? Do tell. Brian's holding a mirror, not a framed photo of the group.

My favorite group photo is this one, taken by Diane Rovell at 10452 in 1971. She took two photos - the other one is around here someplace. One of the dogs is Brian's dog Louie and the other one is Steve Desper's dog. I have a poster of this one framed behind glass that was given to me by a WB rep. The colorized photo brings it to life.

Brian's holding a mirror, not a framed photo of the group. It is a framed photo. I had this debate with a lot of others before. What finally clinched it for me? Shirts button with the button on the right and the holes on the left. If this was a mirror image, they would be reversed. They are not. Also, at the time, Carl parted his hair on the right, as it is in the photo.
Here it is reversed, with the buttons on the wrong side.

The one in front of the bank looks like a movie set. And it looks hot.

View AttachmentView AttachmentCOMMENT to MJK: Here is the description of this photo (from my book). I was standing behind Diane when she took the photo. It was a very impromptu setting, almost done in a moment as we were recording in the studio when she appeared and shuffled everyone out into the courtyard for a quick photo."In this Bel-Air backyard photo of all six Beach Boys, you can see my Dalmatian, Mr. Spock II and Brian’s Weimaraner, Louie wondering right behind Mike and Brian. Quickly taken during a typical recording day, it shows hatless Mike in a Zen Buddhist meditation robe, Brian lounging in his terrycloth bath robe, Carl sporting a custom western coat from Nudie’s in North Hollywood, Alan wearing a knit Cashmere Cardigan sweater, Dennis fresh from the pool, and Bruce in a tailored shirt with button down Epaulets, barefoot as he often was." ~SWD

Dunno how/why it got sliced. I touched it up a few years ago but can't find it.

That clipped one was in Rolling Stone I think. I don't think so. I've scoured the internet for one that isn't sliced - I had to Photoshop fix it myself. I found this one in an article by Joel Goldenburg in "The Suburban".

Brian has always stuck out the most to me in that 'clipped' photo. Just the emotion and look on his face and in his eyes.
