So... why is the reflection of Brian's knee so very obvious? From my professional perspective, both Brian's knee and its reflection have been heavily retouched. I agree that it's a photo behind glass he's holding. Or else it's a composite image. But not a mirrored image. Who's the photographer? Are they still around to be interviewed?

I would bet it was one of the Capitol Photo guys since it was sent around soon after in this. And yes AGD, I know it says reflected LOL!
Also, at that angle, wouldn't you see the photographer if it were a mirror?

Would you see a photographer if the camera was on a tripod?

If that pic was actually by Marilyn, than it's a strange act from Leibovitz to claim it's hers. Hey Santa! Welcome to the board! Yeah, I think you meant "Diane", not "Marilyn". And you're right about the photo credit! No clue how I made that typo. Diane of course. I’ll correct that.

Hey Santa! Welcome to the board! Yeah, I think you meant "Diane", not "Marilyn". And you're right about the photo credit! Comment: Yes, I've seen that credit to Leibovitz, but I was standing behind Diane when she took the photo with her Rollei Rolleiflex camera. That's the one you look down into the view-finder. Diane took many pictures of the band also. She is a camera buff. She may have just given credit to Leibovitz or handed her the film for developing. I don't know what the story is or much about the credit over the shot. Diane and Leibovitz were friends, so who knows what they worked out. I just know what I witnessed during our break from recording. Leibovitz took photos that afternoon that were staged settings. Diane's shot was more like, "Hey fellows, let me take a few shots too." for her personal use. Whatever, her photo captures something that everyone likes. It has lived on while the other professional photos have been ignored. I'm not going to get involved with another historical challenge. I was there and that is that as far as I'm concerned. You all can believe what you wish. ~swd O, I ceratinly believe you. 🙂 I just wondered how it worked out that Leibovitz got that credit as well. That’s all.

These guys were probably involved. George Osaki (art director), Bruce Johnston and George Jerman (photographer). This is from the Pet Sounds photo shoot.

Carl was adamant that Bruce not appear in the photo as he was not on par with the rest of the group. I think when Carl stated this, he was pissed at Bruce for siding with Mike against his wanting the group to up its game.

Despite the controversy that may have involved outside forces as it were, to a man each of the five surviving Beach Boys said that he enjoyed being on stage and they all were very happy with their performances and the quality of the music and the quality of the shows.
The album of course I'm not so sure and it's really unclear for example how much of Dave's Guitar part was preserved by Joe thomas, and whether the boys were ever around the microphone at the same time , and perhaps all sorts of fictions were created about unity in the studio. But it's pretty clear that these are real smiles and real Joy of being together and the performances by each and every Beach Boy in every possible measurable way work extraordinary individually and as a group during those 70 plus shows around the world in 2022.

Always wondered where this photo first appeared. I did not see it until it was included in the booklet for the 1993 boxset.

Brian's holding a mirror, not a framed photo of the group. I always knew that. You can see the reflection of Brian's knee under Carl and Al.

Photos from this session are my favorites from the 1970s, for sure. The one where they're within the California image. Did someone post that? I'm looking through the thread again.

Just found this photo, which I had never seen before. More proof that Brian was holding a photo of the Boys, not a mirror. View AttachmentAlso, I've never uploaded any image on here before, so here's hoping it works... Just more proof that one of the images from this photo shoot was inserted into the frame after the fact.

It is a framed photo. I had this debate with a lot of others before. What finally clinched it for me? Shirts button with the button on the right and the holes on the left. If this was a mirror image, they would be reversed. They are not. Also, at the time, Carl parted his hair on the right, as it is in the photo.
Here it is reversed, with the buttons on the wrong side.
Absolutely! Plus look at the added line drawn above Brian's left leg in the pic which also appears in the supposed mirror image of his leg in the pic. Like you say, the shirt buttons and hair parts give it away as a photo Brian is holding. And while inserting the photo of the guys in the frame would be super easy with today's technology, it was also very possible with a cut and paste back when the pic was taken. Not to mention that successfully arranging a reflected image of the rest of the group with Brain holding a mirror showing them perfectly positioned would be much more difficult than just having BW holding a pic of the group. For years after I first saw the pic I assumed it showed Brain holding a long horizontal pic of the rest of the group until someone noticed, "But wait! The pic shows a reflection of Brian's left knee! So he must be holding a mirror!" But I'd say the supposedly reflected knee was a clever addition by someone in the art department to give the appearance of a mirror. I've never been convinced. Knee is in the photo.
