Let’s get this show on the road For Tournament #4: 1981, I thought it would be fun to add a new element – nominations. 30 songs were nominated. I’ve included them all, and filled out the rest of the top 100 using the Acclaimed Music and Billboard year end lists. Round 1 begins now, with heat 1. Here's the playlist: 1981: Round 1 Heat 1

Not seeing a ton of love for Juice Newton at the moment, which saddens me a bit. Queen of Hearts is a bookmark song for me. Takes me back to Christmas 1983, when I was 8 years old. The year my sister and I had the chicken pox all Christmas break and were confined to the house, no visiting for us. My uncle did come over Christmas Eve though and brought my mom a mix tape that he made, and it had Queen of Hearts on it. I stole that tape and played it over and over again for days until the cassette player chewed it up, LOL. My mom was pretty pissed at me and banned me from playing her tapes for a while. That was a weird friggin' Christmas. But I'll always be grateful to Juice for getting me through the pox.

Spirits in the Material World
Burnin' for You
Mean Street
Our Lips Are Sealed
Hold On Tight
I could only come up with 5. I guess '81 is a little lean for me music-wise. But that's fine. No complaints here.

Here are the results of round 1, heat 1. The top 6 songs are advancing to round 2: 1. Burnin’ For You - Blue Oyster Cult (7 votes) 2. Spirits in the Material World - The Police (6 votes) 3. Our Lips Are Sealed - The Go-Go's (5 votes) 4. Just the Two of Us - Grover Washington Jr. feat. Bill Withers (5 votes) 5. Hold On Tight - Electric Light Orchestra (5 votes) 6. The Boy from New York City - The Manhattan Transfer (4 votes)7. Mean Street - Van Halen (3 votes) 8 Watching the Wheels - John Lennon (3 votes) 9. Queen of Hearts - Juice Newton (2 votes) 10. Kids in America - Kim Wilde (2 votes) In a totally unexpected (at least by me) turn of events, a Beatle has been shut out at the gate. What is even happening? LOL. Round 1 continues with heat 2 now up. Here's the playlist: 1981: Round 1 Heat 2

In a totally unexpected (at least by me) turn of events, a Beatle has been shut out at the gate. What is even happening? LOL. @surflower: I knew every record in the list for 1966. Not so 1981. I'm not familiar with that John Lennon song for example. And I don't believe in passing judgement on songs I'm hearing now for the first time. I have "Primary" on The Cure's LP Faith. And the Hall & Oates song counts as an "evergreen". But that's all for me this time.

I wonder if some voters missed the John Lennon song in the first heat.
Anyway
Ringo
Petty and Nicks
Motley Crue
Blondie
Squeeze
Air Supply

I wonder if some voters missed the John Lennon song in the first heat. Hmmm, you could be right. It did have unfortunate placement at the bottom of the list.

Even with the Beatles bias / Beach Boy inferiority complex bias I've seen, I never thought a Lennon song would be bounced in favor of something by Manhattan Transfer.

Well, the mighty Van Halen and Motley Crue tracks were bounced in the first round. Where's The Captain when I need him for some other hard rock love?
Iron Maiden - Even though I know it won't make the cut
REO
Easton
Stray Cats
Men at Work
Loverboy

Don't give up hope, is all I'm saying

jk I didn't realize what Der Kommissar was until I listened to it - I love that song! It's the best one on todays list. There was an English language version of that in 1982 by After the Fire. Falco's was better, tho. He helped write it. Both were big at the MTV nation.
I can't even find six worth voting for. There's much better songs from 1981 than what I'm seeing here.

My favorite Falco track was "Rock Me Amadeus" - went to #1 on the Billboard Charts in 1986.
