By any chance, you wouldn't happen to be thinking of the 10-track promo CD included with the U.K. publication Mail On Sunday, coinciding with the release of BWPS? That contained Brian Wilson Band recordings of 10 Beach Boys songs, but I can't remember if it included "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" (if so, it was the BWPS version, not the 1966 original). It also got Brian slapped with another lawsuit from Mike, because the CD cover was a shot (or shots) of the Beach Boys, used without their permission. Otherwise, there's a small part of my memory that MIGHT recall a music magazine including the BWPS version shortly after it won the Grammy for "best rock instrumental". But again, the 2004 version, not the original. I always thought Mike Love sued Brian because Beach Boys recordings were included, and Mike thought that giving away Beach Boys recordings lowered the value of the catalog. I didn't know they were Brian's re-recordings of Beach Boys songs. I would think Brian could do whatever he wanted to with his own recordings. (As if Mike selling CDs his own re-recordings of Beach Boys songs at '76 gas stations kept the value of the Beach Boys catalog high!). Mike's beef was the fact that a PICTURE of the Beach Boys was included. Had the picture been of Brian, or Brian and his band, there wouldn't have been an issue.

I'm gonna say I wouldn't discount JDS idea here, and going on memory, and nothing to show to say I know otherwise. I remember something about this, was it in some Musician's or Music Production Making magazine? There have been 'tonnes' of these types of magazines produced over the years that it would not surprise me something like this is easy enough to fall through the cracks. Yeah, something like that. Makes more sense that Guitar World! I'm glad someone else has a vague memory pointing in the same direction. Even if I'm wrong on some particular, I'm not completely nuts. The more I think about it, I seem to recall someone (perhaps Bob Hanes?) sending me a cassette tape of a European radio special on the Beach Boys, where they (without authorization) played the BB version of "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" before it had been officially released. But I think if it had been formally pressed to disc, I would have been scouring Goldmine magazine to try and find a copy. Lee

Lee Roger Scott of Capital Radio was given to doing that sort of thing... but if he had, I'd remember as that was my go-to station when he was on it (to 1988).
But, according to jds, it was after the release of BWPS, so forget what I just said. It's early, I've just woken up and the tea's not kicked in yet.

Is this the one where Mike's lawyers wrote an inaccurate complaint and did some lazy lawyering and Mike eventually ended up asking the judge to release him from his own lawyers or some such? Might be confusing lawsuits.

Bill Scanlan Murphy. Whatever happened to him ? Last I heard he was living in the house where Welles shot The Magnificent Ambersons in upper Chesapeake.

I'm even more excited for this box set that I was for Feel Flows, and I know that's probably not the popular opinion.
My favorite era of the Beach Boys is from Today to Pet Sounds, but I probably like the Blondie/Ricky era more than most and find myself listening to CATP, Holland and In Concert more than most other Beach Boys LPs.
Since there isn't much information on this box, I don't know exactly what we'll be getting, but an official release of the studio versions of We Got Love, Hard Times and Carry Me Home and any and all live material from the era would be amazing.
I need officially released live versions of everything they were playing at the time, especially Jumpin' Jack Flash, I've Got A Friend, River Song, Cuddle Up, Johnny B Goode and I Get Around.

We Got Love Will most likely be on the set, but it was also officially released in 2015 on the HDTracks and analog productions remasters of Holland

That reminds me of another BBC radio documentary, put together by, I think Davey Scott of Pearlfishers, which I seem to remember included Child is Father of the Man, which must also have been played from a bootleg…

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the release of Carl and the Passions- “So Tough”. I remember seeing it in the record store the day of release, but did not have the funds to buy it. Less than a month later I moved from Philly to Scottsdale, AZ and bought the 8-Track there sometime later in the Summer.

I bought the So Tough album when it was first released. And I remember thinking how weird the opening song seemed, which didn't sound much like The Beach Boys to me, followed by "Here She Comes," which sounded even less like The Beach Boys, followed by "He Come Down," which sounded somewhat like The Beach Boys but I don't like gospel music at all, followed by "Marcella," which was the first song I liked, and as a matter of fact, really liked. Side two continued the pattern of weak material, although it was nice to hear from Dennis again, after his absence from Surf's Up. Not one of my favorite Beach Boys LPs.

I was waiting for them to do something a bit harder edged, especially after hearing It’s About Time on Sunflower and SDT on Surf’s Up. I was not impressed with the Dennis tunes. Make It Good is a song that goes nowhere and Cuddle Up could be two minutes shorter. This album, along with Holland were the albums that convinced my “Hip” friends that The Beach Boys were OK to listen to. 🙂

I agree, not my favourite either. I'm more than happy to reassess it though when the new box comes out. It's one of those albums I feel I should like, but just don't. I think it's the lack of cohesiveness which you alluded to in your above post. Alone, some of the songs are great, but as a collection it just doesn't hang together well, in my opinion of course I'm a huge fan of Dennis's work, but his two cuts on this album I find too saccharine and cloying to the ears. I'd be very interested to hear any earlier versions of these two songs other than 'Old Movie' (which I love). By earlier, I mean without the orchestration Holland on the other hand I am very fond of. It has a dark feeling to it and evokes a mood in me similar to Smiley Smile (the album not the forum - that old haunt certainly sends me to a dark place). Steamboat is just sublime, and I'll be very interested to hear any outtakes / backing tracks of that particular tune. Trader also. So I'm certainly interested in what the box has in store for us, but not as much as I was for Feel Flows, and certainly not as much as I will be for hearing the potential Love You era set. That album easily makes my top five BB albums, and I'm sorry to say its a pistol duel at dawn with anyone who disagrees.

I agree with the above two remarks about Dennis' sleepy songs on So Tough. They aren't as integrated into the Beach Boys sound as his songs were on Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Holland, or L.A. (Light Album). It's also a shame that there were no Dennis songs on 15-Big Ones, Love You, M.I.U Album, or Keepin' the Summer Alive. Those albums could have used some Dennis compositions.

I told my then High School teacher I was a big Beach Boys fan, and by that, I really meant, all I knew was the 'greatest hits' and basically the 62-69 'Golden Greats' album. To my surprise one day, he came in and copied his 'So Tough' and 'Holland' albums down to cassette for me. I was ecstatic! What a whole different experience, and I went through the whole 'Is this the same band I was telling my teacher about?..... Of course when things like 'Sail On Sailor' came on or 'California Saga' I kind of deciphered it was. It took me a long time to really get those two albums, and initially, something I put down a lot, and over time, I was discovering a whole different band and a bands creativity I started to like equally and eventually even more so than the earlier surf music. It was all very exciting. My teacher Mr. Anderson, died a few years later from Cancer, but I always remember him when I think of those 2 albums and introducing me to a whole different chapter of the band.

It was actually a 2nd run of pressings of the German release that included the early (and therefore wrong) line-up in side A.

I recognise that. In my early days as a fan it came to a point that had heard all Beach Boys hits in the Netherlands, except for 2: YNAMOHTSA, and Marcella (yes, both were hits here). I couldn't find the singles, but I was able to find a vinyl copy. It took a while to get used to the change of sound. But I love it now. Btw, same goes for Pacific Ocean Blue. It took a while to give that one a second spin. But after a 3rd/4th one, it finally 'grabbed me'.

Trust me.
It'll be worth every penny. As long as it doesn't have the same awful mastering as heard on the Feel Flows box-set. Given how superb all previous Beach Boys archive releases have sounded, I have no idea why Alan and Mark mastered Feel Flows in such a way, but I REALLY hope it was a one-off. I'll be heartbroken if we finally get an official release of Carry Me Home and it has the same LOUD compressed-to-death vocal sound as heard on Old Movie (Cuddle Up) and Hawaiian Dream.

To carry on my bitch about CATP, I just don't like the cover or the title either. I know these things are less important to people in the streaming age, but to me an album is a physical entity, and things like the artwork and title are very much a part of the whole experience.

I don't know about that, but at a Brian concert -- don't remember when (probably NOT during the Jeff Beck tour) but it was definitely in the last ten years -- Brian introduced "Surf's Up" and said that it was a terrible song (or something to that effect). Al said, "Brian, what are you talking about?? It's from Smile - it's one of the most amazing pieces of music ever written." And Brian sang the whole thing while rolling his eyes.

It was clear they were definitely trying to shed their image with this album. Honestly I think it has improved over time and aged fairly well in the long run. I do appreciate where they were trying to go with the band and adding Ricky and Blondie to the mix was a smart idea, even if their initial contributions seemed a little jarring to the Beach Boys' sound at first. If anything it was during this period where the band was most daring and adventurous with their live shows more than ever before or ever since.
