If it’s a choice between hearing The demo with the original lyrics but nothing else, or hearing absolutely nothing at all, i’ll take the demo. Even if it only is 90 seconds. The won’t you tell me demo is only two minutes of what I presume is a much longer tape, and yet it’s one of my favorite things on Feel Flows. Not that I don’t find that dialogue fascinating but it’s really not a deal breaker if it’s not there, it’s most certainly not anyone’s proudest moment

I am happy with whatever gets released. No complaints from me. We are lucky we are getting anything at all so I’m grateful for what we get. Amen to that.

Well, not a complaint, just a suggestion!
A Blu-Ray containing the set in high def would be appreciated - CDs are very 1990’s, it’s time we caught up to the modern technology of 2006.

… and pictures, LOTS of pictures from this era, the studio, their homes, etc… And lots of live tracks. Starting with The original single disc In Concert album that was withdrawn. 🙂 Yes, I am with you. I want as many live tracks from this era as possible, and not necessarily the hits. Unless there is also going to be a live box at some point, I'll take as many live versions of Marcella, JJF, Long Promised Road, Trader, Here she Comes, etc. as they care to sell me.

This! 💯 And the Sesson tracks because this is what is new-to-fans. It is that excitement of something new, and not so much a remix. Maybe remastering is ok, but the live tracks and the sessions are what matter to me.

They've been available, on the KGB and Ray Kennedy versions, for over 40 years. I believe the demo has another different set of lyrics. From Howie Edelson: “As far as stuff that does exist – I gotta say, Brian Wilson’s 1971 demo of “Sail On Sailor” is one that took my breath away. He’s really skittish – but the changes, the chords, the melody -- it’s all there. But the thing that caught my attention was it starts with a lyric mentioning Brooklyn of all places. Now, all of a sudden, I remembered that (Beach Boys photographer) Ed Roach – who’s literally as Brooklyn as it comes -- was actually at Bellagio that very day and overheard this whole performance. Ed was eavesdropping, sitting smoking a joint outside the studio door by the garden path entrance. So, I asked him if he had seen Brian that day – he told me he hadn’t. But. . . Ed had been in the studio over the past few days co-producing tracks with Stephen Desper for his buddies -- from Brooklyn -- named Thunder. You put one-and-one together – and Ed Roach now figures into the inspiration for one of Brian Wilson’s masterpieces.” Goldmine magazine One thing you’ll notice about the released versions… Not a single lyric about Brooklyn. Also, I believe the demo predates any involvement from Ray Kennedy, And the version that you are referring to includes the lyric: “Just like my mamma said, Ray there's a way But you gotta get yourself out of that ghetto today” Which would make absolutely no sense in a song written by Brian Wilson with no “Rays” havving contributed to the lyrics just yet.

I thought the Ray reference was to Ray Charles. Hasn't Brian claimed that he wrote the song with him in mind?

Still the original lyrics from the Brian demo are unreleased, and are not the same ones found on the Ray Kennedy version

I'd be interested in any weirdo Brian stuff (the Sail On Sailor and Fairy Tale worktapes with every bit of extraneous dialogue, stuff like that.) I'm really hoping for cool Brian stuff that we don't know about at all, though the outlook on such pickings seems slimmer for each new release.
With the exceptions of "Funky Pretty" and "Steamboat" I'm not particularly interested in the original group studio material from this era. They were all capable-to-great musicians, but I find the group's take on Doobie Brothers FM rock to be uninspired, bordering on tedious. Live stuff would be the primary appeal.

Well…one of the great things about the recent releases is that they made me appreciate albums that I thought were only ok much more. After the friends/20-20 releases I really found renewed fervor for those two lps. So don’t underestimate the ability of this box to change your opinion of the more progressive music the BBs did in 1972!

One of the tracks I'm looking forward to is "Carl's Song". That. And Carry Me Home in pristine quality wouldn’t disappoint me either. Or early / demo versions of Mess Of Help aka Beatrice From Baltimore. Would River Song qualify in this series? There’s lot of stuff if you think of it. I’m really curious what they’ll release. Probably little chance of seing the I Got Love sessions being released, as the original tapes seem to be lost. And the tape that does circulate is of average quality. And sounds more like a practice session anyway. But who knows what else was recorded then. There might be a tiny little line to that former studio, but I suspect it to be a dead end.

Live tracks would be amazing of course, but what I'm really looking forward to is the two versions of Out in the Country, to which BW definitely contributed quite heavily.
A solid collab between Don Goldberg and BW. That's not circulating in really pristine quality right now.
If I'm not mistaken, BW laid down some backing tracks for Sail On Sailor in '71, I think. So those could be on there too!

We just got the track and backing vocals for "Mess Of Help", but an early version would be nice. We got the a cappella to "Marcella" which is bitchin', but a clean unmuddled instrumental track of that would be nice. Early version ('73/'74) of River Song would be outstanding - we've heard live versions from '73 and I think an early studio version of that on boots.

My understanding with Carry Me Home is the production team have to get it past themselves! Hopefully, positions have changed in the last ten or so years. RCM: What songs have fans been petitioning to be included that didn’t make the final cut on the box set?
Alan Boyd: There are a few specific tracks that keep getting discussed by the fans. One is Carry Me Home, a Dennis Wilson song. We had put so much Dennis material on the box plus the fact that the song has been circulating for 25 years factored into our decision to leave it off. We also felt a little uncomfortable with the idea of at this point in time of Dennis singing (recites lyrics), “Please God don’t let me die“.

Mike Love himself nixed it for the last go-around. Said it was too depressing.

Regardless, they can still include them if they do exist, and I’m not misremembering. Shouldn’t dictate anything. They don’t always just stick to the time periods in question, as precedent has shown.

I think Mike, if it indeed was him, was correct in vetoing Carry Me Home for a career retrospective box set. It would have felt wildly out of place, especially being immediately followed by rock ‘n’ roll music, it’s OK and tunes of that nature. It’s a song that doesn’t really reflect The Beach Boys career, and it’s completely understandable why they didn’t include it on MIC. However, for a box set dedicated to the sessions that song is a part of, and in the situation where they have to release it in some form by the end of this year, I think it’s pretty much guaranteed that it will see inclusion. Remember, from that same article linked above, other songs that were vetoed were Thank Him (later released on The Big Beat 1963), My Solution (later released on Feel Flows), and Walkin’ (later released on both I Can Hear Music and Feel Flows). So I don’t think the fact that it was vetoed, a decade ago, on a completely different project trying to fulfill a completely different purpose means anything.

Right. There was a time when they decided not to release "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Fire)" on the 30 Years of Good Vibrations Box Set because Brian had previously stated that he didn't want it out. Then Brian goes and re-records his own version, and wins a Grammy for best instrumental! So then Capitol releases the original Beach Boys version, and wins a Grammy for best historical album for the previously recorded sessions. So there you go.

I think the EU copyright problem has been solved: just release the tracks on an unadvertised streaming account and remove them after they've been uploaded for five seconds. It seems to satisfy the legal requirements whether fans discover the tracks or not. (Alternately, they don't care because no one's going to try and get rich selling bootleg Sail On Sailor backing sessions.)

And what song was it.......I think it was "Let Him Run Wild" that Brian didn't want on the '93 box set or whatever it was because he thought he sounded like a "whiny girl"? Lookit. Not once, not even for a minute, did I ever think "Carry Me Home" was out of place or inappropriate Beach Boys music when I listened to the California Feeling, Denny Remembered, Dreamer, Bamboo, Rarities 14, and Holland (alt) bootlegs all those years ago.
