*Edit- Tony Asher is the winner!!
Following AGD’s post about Jack Rieley and the subsequent thread, I’ve been reflecting about various beach boys collaborators and how they influenced the boys’ music.
So I thought it could be interesting to try a survivor poll in which we vote off our least favorite collaborator each round to determine who had the most favorable impact on The Beach Boys.
I aim to define a “significant collaborator” as someone who contributed directly to more than one track via songwriting, lyrics, production, arranging. Simply singing or playing an instrument won’t be enough (I.e., no wrecking crew members). Also the person should never have been a ‘member’ of the group (I.e., no Blondie/Ricky). After some initial discussion we'll exclude engineers for now.
WINNER: Tony Asher
Eliminated collaborators: Round 1: Eugene Landy Round 2: Randy Bachman, Gary Winfrey, and Steve Levine Round 3: Joe Thomas Round 4: Dick Reynolds Round 5: Murry Wilson, Myrna Smith-Schilling, John Phillips Round 6: Ron Altbach, Terry Melcher, Andy Paley Round 7: Geoffrey Cushing-Murray and Tandyn Almer Round 8: Daryl Dragon Round 9: Stephen Kalinich Round 10: Gregg Jakobson Round 11: Roger Christian Round 12: Jack Rieley Round 13: Gary Usher Round 14: Van Dyke Parks

Maybe J.W. Guercio deserves a mention as he had a hand in some of the production aspects?

Howsabout we limit this to musical/lyrical collaborators ?
BTW, you missed Jeff Lynne: he wrote all of "Let It Shine" bar the opening/closing vocal round.
Also, you've committed one of the cardinal BB sins, and one that, if I had my way, would be punishable by eternal exile to the outer limits of BB fandom forever (you know what I mean...): Brian's father was not called Murray.

Myrna Smith-Schilling - mainly Carl’s solo career, but she gets a coupla creds on ‘85 as well.
I agree with AGD about limiting it to musical/lyrical.

Music/lyrics sounds like a good idea.
Apologies for my unforgivable sins.
Jeff Lynne contributed to BW88 but I was limiting it to ‘beach boys’ collaborators. Unless I am mistaken and he contributed to other works.
Also was including folks who contributed to at least two songs, in an attempt to shorten the list

Updated list is posted, I will add the poll for first round shortly. Thanks to all who contributed.
For the first round I vote for Eugene Landy, a man who has no business being on this list in the first place. A talentless and unethical hack.

Did Garby Leon assist in the writing of any of the songs Brian and Dennis worked on in 1982?
Edit: Also despite the events surrounding him, Scott Bennet(sp?) should probably be included.

I'll go with Landy as well, since many of the songs on which he assisted Brian sound like they were done by somebody who'd never been in a recording studio.

I am by no means anything close to an expert on the subject, but from what I have read Garby’s home was used for recording. That said I do not know of any specific songwriting contributions to specific songs...and I would also question whether these sessions are truly ‘Beach boys’ music or a spinoff of 2 brothers enjoying each other’s company and making music (and doing drugs). So i don’t really know how I would rate him in this poll. Regarding Mr Bennett, similarly I do not know of 2 original beach boys songs he had direct music/lyric contributions meeting the poll criteria. But if you can provide such info I will add him. Anyone is welcome to submit write in votes as well.

I am voting off Landy. Glad he saved Brian's life, but wish he was gone by 86.

And with an overwhelming 9 of 12 votes, Landy is rightfully sent packing.
Surprised to see a vote for VDP this early...has Mike decided to participate?
Round 2 poll will be up shortly.

I am voting for Steve Levine. I think he only co-wrote Maybe I Don't Know, and while I like that song, he is one of 4 people credited on it, so he receives my vote.

I am still giving him my vote, I get trying to get The Beach Boys to sound contemporary, but I think this record would have sounded much better with real drums on all the tracks.

I'm going to take care of business and vote off Randy Bachman. His contributions to the weak KTSA weren't exactly very noteworthy.

I like this idea for a poll. I'm voting off Dick Reynolds, and will probably keep doing so until y'all catch up with me.
