I've given her public grief, for making what I considered to be inane and/or provocative statements: the one I recall was that she listened to the music, and what the artist went through to make said music didn't matter.

I've given her public grief, for making what I considered to be inane and/or provocative statements: the one I recall was that she listened to the music, and what the artist went through to make said music didn't matter. What the artist goes through, is often the driving creative force for expressing it through either music, art or literature. And, I didn't understand that position.

And, I didn't understand that position. What position didn't you understand, fdp? I'm afraid you've lost me. jk - When I was in undergrad - one of my professors (my favorite) who taught Reading and Language Arts, emphasized that when you teach children how to write a composition - and, to avoid "writer's block" that you had to have some input or some experience, in order to write your reflections on it - and, that "you can't create in a vacuum" - (her wise words.) So, that when an 8 year-old needed to learn how to compose a paragraph - you could show them a picture - her favorite was Norman Rockwell (one of mine as well) and talk about what was going on in the painting as a point to start. And, she taught us that - "creativity comes from someplace or some inspiration."

About home deliveries (South Louisiana) The milkman came to our house regularly; however our milk came in cartons. My Grandmother had delivery of non-homogenized milk in glass bottles . When we visited her we'd fight over who would get to taste the cream at the top. Also had the Egg man (he delivered eggs to us into the 1980s). The Fuller Brush man would stop by to see if we needed any mops, brooms, etc. The Coffee Man would also stop by. Finally, the Avon lady would stop by to see if my Mom needed any beauty products. Outside of the eggs, all these other things stopped by the mid 60s. But they are nice memories. My Mom remembers when the fruit/vegetable carts would drive by her neighborhood. And she's also old enough to remember the Ice Man who delivered ice for the icebox, before her family got a refrigerator.
Nowadays, home deliveries are making a comeback.

The late 50s/60s was a transitional time. Supermarkets were becoming more popular but one could still find specialty shops. If we wanted meat , fish, etc we would go to those respective markets . I remember passing a market that had chickens in a cage. You'd pick the chicken and the guy would take care of business so to speak. Went to special bakeries to get that wonderful French bread that's now almost impossible to find here nowadays. Crusty on the outside soft on the inside, warm it up and slather with butter - yum! The bread would go stale in less than a day. But never fear - my Grandfather would soak the bread in milk and proceed to make the best bread pudding. Or one could after soaking it place on the griddle and make pain perdu (lost bread) , great topped with powdered sugar. (I'm getting hungry!)
I'm sure those of you outside the US are saying "what's the big deal" as many of you still frequent specialty grocers. But here so called convenience, with its blandness , won out at least temporarily . Down here I 'm starting to see a definite pushback , with the specialty shops re-appearing.

My mother is from New Orleans so I spent all my summers there growing up. I remember a salt taffy delivery guy (much like an ice cream man) and I loved that. And even though we now live in a much higher altitude, we still make "lost bread". I have to admit, it takes way longer for bread to go bad here (we're in Vegas) but I will also say that the best french bread is made in New Orleans probably due to the low altitude and other factors possibly.

Hello, the "salt taffy" is still available , from a mule-drawn cart that makes its way around town. You can find info and some nice videos at romancandy.com Nowadays the candy can be ordered but somehow that loses something.
I love to hear about local traditions, the history behind them.

Ive been getting into emulation and ROM hacks of NES, Super Nintendo, N64 and Playstation 1 games lately. It's been really cool but sometimes really annoying to set things up. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is one of my favorite games so I was really excited to get the ROM hacks SMW2+ and SMW2+2 up and running but it's taken forever since apparently they require very specific ROMs to patch to in order to work. I only just got them up and running today after a week.

Cold weather is one thing; this is quite another. It's -30F (-34C) air temperature with -50F (-45C) wind chills at the moment. We did get a little snow--about 5" at my house--Monday morning, but not a serious blizzard or anything. Still, it's so cold, the salt doesn't really do any good on roads or sidewalks. Not only are schools closed for the cold, but lots of businesses. That's really rare, I think maybe even unprecedented to this extent as far as I can remember.
I'm taking the opportunity to work from home, though, a nice treat mid-week.

Thanks John. I dont think BBF did anything wrong. There was one post she made on the forum I thought was a dig at me, but after talking in private I believe she meant no harm. She hasnt said or done anything even half as brazenly confrontational as some other people across all three forums whove never been called out for it. I also dont think theres anything inherently wrong with not advertising who you are from forum to forum either. I didnt tell anybody I was Mujan at first after coming to PSF. This is because I wasnt sure if Id have been welcome if I had and I just wanted a fresh start--not being boxed in as "the SMiLE poster" or made to answer for everything Id ever said from the SS days. Its possible BBF felt similarly. Just food for thought. Thank you, Leni. Your support appreciated. That said, it would be nice if people didn't use gender when discussing I. I'm to everybody Beach Boys Fan here. BBF. I picked this name due to being, in fact, Beach Boys fan. Thus, it's truthful identity. To milk glass bottle replies - I'm glad y'all enjoyed answering my question, even via quoting somebody else, it's still MY question, *I* created it. Some people even answered in details. It's been interesting read. Ta.

I am not getting into the pronoun thing on this board. This is not California and I will not enforce any such request. Just so we are all clear here. Thank you.

Maybe BBF is a boy for all we know. Now that they called me on it, I'm not entirely sure why I assumed they were a girl in the first place.

Did you delete your original post on the subject or is it just me? I read people in the U.S. get milk in glass bottles delivered to the door daily. Is it paid or do you get it for free by default due to food law, for example? Tell. Paging people living in the U.S. Can anybody answer? I think this happened many years ago, but never in my lifetime, and Im 38. We've always bought our milk in a plastic bottle or cardboard carton from the supermarket. I’m confused!

When I was little kid in the early 60’s, we did have milk delivered by truck, in glass bottles, on our porch. Once supermarkets took over, all deliveries such as milk, eggs, bread, etc. pretty much came to a halt. There was a short revival in the 90s, but I don’t think any are in business today. One local business that does deliveries is for dry cleaning.

One local business that does deliveries is for dry cleaning. A lot of the supermarkets do on line (or phone) orders and deliver it all. Delivery is such a luxury! In the late 80's I found a company that delivered diapers. The huge cartons of diapers, that take up at least half the space your grocery cart - slap of reality when you have to shop and work full-time. Milk in glass bottles was really heavy so delivery was a great alternative until it was in lighter paper cartons.

Im not gonna focus on this can of worms, but I will just say when you don't know how someone is called, you're kind of locked into saying "they" by default. In English there is no neutral set of pronouns that doesn't sound dehumanizing. If you google "they" the first hit is a set of definitions. The second of which is "used to refer to a person of unspecified gender" so it is grammatically correct.
I get that people making up new pronouns and shit is...I'll just say it's confusing and leave it at that. But the backlash against made up pronouns like xer, xim and nonbinary "they" has caused an irrational backlash against what's linguistically correct in this circumstance.
And now, just to move the conversation along, I'll say that the animated Castlevania series on netflix is really good. I've been a fan of those games since high school and they ended up adapting the story of the best games (Castlevania 3 and Symphony of the Night) perfectly. Im doubtful it's something that'd be up most of your guys' alley, but for whatever it's worth I'd recommend checking it out.

I remember the music you once linked from the series and that was brilliant. I may even have linked some in the Incidental Music topic--if not, I'll do it now. Absolutely! Castlevania games always had great music too Plenty of genres covered as well. For those who missed it on PSF here's a sampler, from newer hardware to older. These videos contain the complete soundtracks but they should start playing at what I consider to be the best and most diversified tracks on each album:
