Alright, so I went down a little creative Rabbit Hole today, and...well, I did a thing. It's not a full-on SMiLE mix, but rather a little experiment I wanted to try. As I eluded to, I was torn on whether i liked "You're Welcome" or "Our Prayer/Gee" as the opener. I did some more thinking on it, and suddenly I was reminded of The Who and their penchant for overtures in their concept albums. It lead me to wonder: What if, to close the album, Brian had decided to feature a selection of songs together as a reprise? It's not out of the realm of SMiLE at all to imagine, so after about a full day of tinkering in MuseScore, I was able to arrange a very small piano medley that could have in theory been played over "You're Welcome" - and I must say, once I managed to get it all in sync, it turned out quite well for a stupid little side project. So well, in fact, that I even went ahead and recorded some backing vocals for the apex of the piece. I'm by no means a good singer beyond a certain casual limit, but it was at least fun to do! All in all, for a day's work i'm pretty happy with it. That said, it would be a much better executed concept in the hands of of more skilled fan-mix'er than I, so I think i'll present it here not as a finished idea but as a concept for your consideration. Picture if you will everything mixed on a more professional level, and with full orchestral arrangement instead of just piano notes. I would gladly invite someone to improve upon this if they see any value in the idea. With that out of the way, I hope someone out there will enjoy it for what it is! You're Welcome...To SMiLE!in case anyone's curious, Here is the piano piece without any other music. Made up of course with Heroes & Villains, Barnyard, Old Master Painter, Good Vibrations, Surf's Up and Vega-Tables. I do wonder what more capable hands could make of it. I like the way the melodies flow together, myself. Oh, and the little end bit on the vocal...I'm sorry. I know it's corny, but I couldn't resist. haha! EDIT: I just realized that I had the wrong notes for "Barnyard"...oh well, close enough!

Aquarian SMiLE: With this one I wanted to flesh out that 2-sided mix idea I first tried out with SMiLE: Reflections. This time though, I wanted to throw out all the bells and whistles, using as much material (including Psychedelic Sounds) that could fit in this 2-suite context as possible without ruining the flow. I'm still proud of this mix but in hindsight I think it goes on too long and outstays its welcome. (You're Welcome) Heroes and Villains Part 1 Cabin Essence Do You Like Worms Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Veggies Argument) Vega-Tables Heroes and Villains Part 2 [including He Gives Speeches vocals over the fade] (Smog Skit) Our Prayer/Holidays Wind Chimes Child is Father of the Man Wonderful/Look Cool Cool Water/Dada Surf's Up Hi, mellowlight . More for completeness' sake than anything else, this ^^^ is my go-to SMiLE mix -- you can hear it * here*... Edit: Note the lack of "Good Vibrations", which may be historically incorrect but makes it a much more satisfactory mix to these ears. "GV" is a stand-alone 45 that I feel doesn't belong on either Pet Sounds or SMiLE. The humor direction was ALL Brian … not Van Dyke or the group.

I'll post this on a low note by sharing what I like to call the "I've lost my Marbles" mix. It includes Heroes and Villains, Do You Like Worms, Love to Say Dada, and Cabin Essence. Thoughts are appreciated. And yes, I'm seeing a therapist.

Ooh, child! That sounds GREAT! I would prefer a bit more reverb on "Who ran the Iron Horse?" but man, Brian's lead vocals are CRISPY! <3 I would love to use that in my own SMiLE mix, if I have your permission! ...which brings me to: I need yall's help and bad! I'm trying to go by the BWPS track order, but also add in some H&V bits n pieces as well as some skits. If anyone has the time or the patience, I'd love an expert to help me out with what I should do. For example, I really want to add the "Three Score & Five" verse to H&V but...gosh darnit, it's so out of place to me that I'm hesitant. Is it that essential, you think? And where should I add "The heroes, the heroes, the Heroes and Villains?! I was thinking to add it somewhere as a background melody to one of the studio bits, but its too short! AHH! MY BRAIN! It truly does make you see how Brian felt trying to piece it all together. I have legitimately NO clue how any of you did it pre-2004. Other than H&V, I'm almost done with the first "Side"...now what am i gonna do about the missing bits on CITFOYM and Look?

While nice, it seems like an interlude of links. Is there another version also included in the album song list? Couldn't work as a single.

Yes, I do have to agree that that version sounds a bit too grainy and they removed some background vocals, so i can't say i'd use it. However, maybe i can use it to decide where some sections can go.

Not to double post, but man...I wish iluvleniloud was still here. I disagree with her about a lot of things (I LOVE BWPS, for example) but her insights are/were a joy to read. I never knew the intro to fire was the intro to H&V until she said so. Not that I'd change it from Our prayer/Gee. It's too good, man.

She was one of those that, sure, was she opinionated? Perhaps, but it only comes from having immense knowledge! I'm EXACTLY like here when it comes to The Beatles and I know exactly how it must have felt having people just not understand how to take your thoughts very well. I think she was tough but fair in her SMiLE opinions, and though I wouldn't have preferred any of her mixes purely as a matter of subjective taste, her passion was undeniable and you could see she only critiqued because she cared. She'd probably kill me for the mix im doing right now. Lol! (Yes, I have turned that corner!) but she's been on my mind as I go through it!

I wonder how many Beach Boys fans made their own Beach Boys Smile tapes before Brian Wilson Presents Smile was released, and even afterwards.
I personally made many such tapes, first before any bootlegs surfaced, and again after new bootlegs came out, and legitimate recordings, too. And of course, I made a Beach Boys version matching Brian Wilson Presents Smile even before the Smile Sessions Box Set. Since that box set came out, the only other thing I did was re-order the Box Set tracks chronologically.
How about you?

It still doesnt stop me from feeling in over my head by comparison. lol Her blog series on it has been great, reading through it. I think she puts a little too much stock in that capitol list though. I know yall have been making mixes since the 80's and that rules to me. Im always fascinated by what fans can do with so little. In truth, mine is not a "Mix" as much as taking my favorite mixes and putting them together to make the album complete. Im using the BWPS track order with a little extra, including You're With Me Tonight as a prelude to Cabin Essence. That ends side 1. Then Side 2 will open with Brian Falls Into A Piano as a prelude to Wonderful/CITFOTM. and I must say, I think I NAILED it. I used one of the H&V sections as ambience to the skit, and not only does it fit the mood perfectly, but when the piano keys are struck IT'S IN THE SAME KEY AS THE MUSIC! It sounds like it was meant to be there! Now if I could only figure out how in the Sam Hil to fill those holes on Look/CITFOTM. There's no definitive stereo mix of a completed version of them...anyone got any ideas? The reason Im doing all this is to present the finished product to a very well known reaction channel on youtube. They've already done Pet Sounds on their patreon and loved it...now I intend to teach them how to SMiLE!

I would love to use that in my own SMiLE mix, if I have your permission! Permission? You have my gratitude! I think I tweaked the second chorus since I uploaded that. Here's my whole fanmix, it might give you some ideas.

Here's my whole fanmix, it might give you some ideas. thanks, and yeah, i was gonna say that after listening again the second chorus sounded better than i thought! I think having some reverb on "Have you seen the grand coulee" could work too, but im nitpicking. I'll happily use this and you'll receive credit! I'll check out your fan mix too! Edit: Woah, do you know where I can get those "Dig a hole in the ground"/"Right off of my shirt" raw samples? Those were cool and I'd love to use that in mine! - and Id like those crunching sounds too! holy crap...gah, I wish I knew how to mix! I'd switch ears for every chomp so that it sounds like its going back and forth. My current Vega-tables is this one: Your CITFOTM mix is also better than what I have currently, I think....still doesnt solve the verse issue though... I've already used a mix with completed lyrics for DYLW, and so I don't want to use fan vocals/ai if I don't have to, but I'm showing the album to first-timers and CITFOTM is REALLY confusing without the verses intact...

The "round round round" vocals I lifted from the demo with center channel elimination. They might sound stereo on my version but they're actually duophonic.
The "grand coulee" vocals are exactly as I extracted them and should have more or less the same reverb that Brian and/or Carl gave them in 66/69.

Right, now what im saying is, how would i extract JUST the round n round and buttons bits from the demo using, say, Audacity so i can add them to the version im using, which is that stereo mix i posted? (In other words i dont need brians lead vocal or the giggles. i have those.)

I think it'd take some powerful software to do that. The way I incorporated those vocals on my version was just to fade up those demo vocals at the right spot, with that last "llllle" of "Vega-Tabllllle" being lost among the vocals of the Spring '67 version. Even then, I had to leave in one of those "ha ha ha ha ha" vocals on the second verse.

I checked Psychedelic sounds and got nothin' from the version on. Youtube... Just bit the bullet and recorded vocals for Look. MAN it's harder to sing than it...well...looks! Probably gonna use your CITFOTM mix too if its ok!

yeah, i've seen that vid, but somehow i get the feeling thats not the source im looking for because it sounds lower quality than i've heard...hmm. i'd want to do something like what Summertime Blooz here did: I think this sounds amazing during the fade, but see? Is it my imagination or is there a higher quality source than whats in the other video being used here? is it me?

Workin' on the mix and I need everyone's opinion: Is it in bad taste to sing over the parts that need it? I've just done a rough treatment of IIGS/Barnyard and I would like some thoughts: vocaroo.com/110lSGgYw2vnDo i sound ok, or even, is it too tacky to sing at all over completed stuff? I only ask cause im trying to make the songs listenable for first timers and this section is so hard to make out in the original...
