In the late 60s to 1971, The Beach Boys overdubbed and completed/perfected an original Smile song, and used it to close out a new album. These are: Cabinessense Cool Cool Water Surf’s Up
Also the 20/20 version of Prayer is great.
Its too bad they didn’t continue in that vein, and put out one more completed Smile song on each new album until there were no more left.

Should've put "Teeter Totter Love" after "Cuddle Up" on Carl and the Passions.
Also, *Smile.

Here is Smile as I see it:
Side 1
1. (Prayer) Heroes and Villains 4:18 2. Do You Like Worms 3:32 3. Vega-Tables 3:47 4. I'm In Great Shape/Barnyard 1:16 5. Old Master Painter (You Were My Sunshine) 1:07 6. Cabin Essence 3:37
Total 17:37
Side 2
1. Good Vibrations 3:38 2. Wind Chimes 3:07 3. The Elements (Fire/I Wanna Be Around/Workshop/DaDa) 5:54 4. Wonderful 1:58 5. Child Is Father Of The Man 2:19 6. Surf’ Up 4:12
Total 20:34
Both sides fit on vinyl and it flows pretty well and it uses the 4 cornerstone songs to begin and end each album side.

I wonder what Smile tracks they would've included on Holland or MIU. Didn't they briefly consider opening LA Light Album with "Do You Like Worms"? The madlads.

Aquarian SMiLE: With this one I wanted to flesh out that 2-sided mix idea I first tried out with SMiLE: Reflections. This time though, I wanted to throw out all the bells and whistles, using as much material (including Psychedelic Sounds) that could fit in this 2-suite context as possible without ruining the flow. I'm still proud of this mix but in hindsight I think it goes on too long and outstays its welcome. (You're Welcome) Heroes and Villains Part 1 Cabin Essence Do You Like Worms Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Veggies Argument) Vega-Tables Heroes and Villains Part 2 [including He Gives Speeches vocals over the fade] (Smog Skit) Our Prayer/Holidays Wind Chimes Child is Father of the Man Wonderful/Look Cool Cool Water/Dada Surf's Up Hi, mellowlight . More for completeness' sake than anything else, this ^^^ is my go-to SMiLE mix -- you can hear it * here*... Edit: Note the lack of "Good Vibrations", which may be historically incorrect but makes it a much more satisfactory mix to these ears. "GV" is a stand-alone 45 that I feel doesn't belong on either Pet Sounds or SMiLE.

Hi guys! I'm new on this forum so i'm gonna introduce myself. Beach Boys lover, bass player and producer. So i love Smile of course. I did some years ago My personal smile reconstruction on YouTube under the name of D4nk4t but the video was was removed after account violation ecc. So i decided to put it on vimeo. I used a lot of good idea that i found on the web and put some of mine. The result was not bad. Even if the sound wasn't as i'd wanted to. I think that soon i'll try to reconstruct it in a better way and with some better sound and idea. For example the great shape stuff that came out in the CITFOTM extra track, maybe in sunflower digital distribution track. Well, i hope soon will be some official release of new stuff that we thought lost. Why not to hope it?
Hope you like my mix Thanks for this space!

Back in 1971, long before any bootlegs, outtakes, alternate versions, or box sets appeared, you could put together an almost complete version of the Smile album, if you knew what you were doing. Only after the bootlegs started appearing in the 1980s did we realize that "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter" was very similar to "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Fire)," that some recordings of the original Smile version of "Vegetables" contained "Mama Says." That the original Smile sessions contained an early version of "With Me Tonight," that the melody of "She's Going Bald" was recorded with different lyrics as "He Gives Speeches," that the melody of "Whistle In" was used elsewhere, and even "You're Welcome" was recorded during the original Smile sessions. We did know that the ending to "Surf's Up" contained at least part of the "Child is Father to the Man."
In fact, other than link tracks, the only major piece missing in at least one officially released recording was "Do You Like Worms?" and even the melody of the chorus to that appeared in the single version of "Heroes and Villains."
So, a 1971 or later personal Smile mix could have been (using Brian Presents SMiLE order):
Our Prayer (20/20) Heroes and Villains (Smiley Smile) Cabinessence (20/20) Wonderful (Smiley Smile) Surf's Up / Child is Father to the Man (Surf's Up)
Woodshop sound at the end of "Do It Again" (20/20) Vegetables (Smiley Smile) Mama Says (Wild Honey) Wind Chimes (Smiley Smile) Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (Smiley Smile) Cool Cool Water (Sunflower) Good Vibrations (Smiley Smile)
Bonus Tracks With Me Tonight She's Going Bald Whistle In You're Welcome

I've always thought that Prayer would have been followed by Good Vibrations as the album opener, it just works.
To hypothesise, i.e. based on zero anecdotal evidence, I think Brian changed his mind and wanted to open with H&V, and then recorded You're Welcome as the overture. Again, it just works.
Prayer/Vibes would then have opened side two.
People get too hung up on this Prayer/Gee/H&V sequence. I've always found it clumsy, and I have it from a very good authority that this was not a vintage sequence. That is not to say there aren't any vintage Brian sequences on BWPS. Again, said source cites Wonderful/Look and CITFOTM/Surfs Up as prime examples.

In an other sense i think that the final sequence has surf's up/CIFOTM/George fell../you're welcome as i did in my mix. And it seems very appropriate

Hi! Matt here, I just posted in the New Members area. I. Adore. SMiLE! It's without a doubt one of my favorite albums by any band, and the lore makes it all the sweeter. Knowing what I know due to me being a giant Beatles nerd, had this album came out in the way Brian envisioned, John and Paul would have been in love with it and proceeded to try something even more astounding. It is, to me, one of the great works of art that is enhanced as much by it's tragedy and mythos as it is by it's triumph as a record and it's completion in 2004. It's now more than a simple album. It's a giant musical erector-set of bits and pieces that one can arrange in any way they like and imagine "What If?" and I'd love to do my own interpretation, as a matter of fact! One thing I've always been interested in knowing is whether or not it would be possible to take the music of BWPS and insert the Beach Boys/Younger Brian's vocals over it where it makes sense, but then I suppose that's superfluous and would make it impossible to do some songs correctly. To that end, If i were to do my own fan mix of the existing material, i'd need some questions answered. For example: Is there a version of "I wanna be around" with vocals from back then ("I wanna be around to pick up the pieces...") In addition, the matter of knowing where to find all the highest quality stereo versions of the songs, all the transitions, etc - it just seems so daunting! I know it's against the rule to ask for specific links, but knowing the sources of where the material comes from would help. (IE, the version of Vega-Tables that has Brian chanting "Where's my beets - and my carrots?!"/"I've got a big bag o' vegetables!" etc.) I guess what I'm saying is, I would need to know where to find all the different puzzle pieces if I'm going to put them together, and there's a LOT to parse through. It sometimes makes me wish there was an official "Build-A-SMILE" kit!

From the earliest days until now, every time you make a version of Smile, more pieces are added to the official Build-a-SMILE kit, making your current personal mix obsolete.

Without that element, the name SMiLE is pretty meaningless, as I see it:

Without that element, the name SMiLE is pretty meaningless, as I see it: EXACTLY! The skits would be mandatory in my mix. I've pondered where i'd add them. Maybe the "Piano" one could be heard over or at the end of the section of H&V that has the Riff from The Marx Brothers in it, whats that bit called again? Edit: I also need to know, was Good Vibrations supposed to be on Smile itself for a fact? I can't seem to figure out whether it was always planned that way or whether it was merely the "Precursor" to the project and was just grandfathered into the tracklist. Further, I find myself torn on whether "Our Prayer/Gee" or "Your Welcome" is supposed to be the album intro. Which came first in the timeline? I would think that maybe "You're Welcome" would be a befitting Coda, but Brian put GV as the closer on BWPS...so....hmm....

That said, its position as a closing "romp home" tends to debase it in my view. My go-to * SMiLE mix* leaves it out altogether, and I find the results far more satisfactory. It also has a selection from the skits worked into it. And, it opens with "You're Welcome"! I should add that most others posting here are far more knowledgeable on the subject than I am.

Yeah, I'm trying to think of a situation where you'd need to do that. I think what more people have been attempting as of late is to take the '04 vocals off of something like "Roll Plymouth Rock" and then try to lay them over the 1966 "Worms" track. What did you have in mind exactly? Sadly, no-- no vocal has ever surfaced for that part that I'm aware of. Little things like that will drive you nuts once you decide to put a mix of your own together. Like on my last one, I was forced to graft on the ending from the '04 "Surf's Up" because there's no Beach Boys equivalent for it.

Yeah, I love that part! '04's version of CabinEssence has a similar ending to cap off the movement as well. In terms of what I had in mind as far as a mashup goes, for one it's so I can hear young Brian on 04's Surf's up. I know he sings well enough on BWPS, but he just doesn't sing the second half with the same somber cadence as the one in '66 and it hurts the rendition, I feel. Secondly, I would very much like to hear Young Brian over '04's H&V backing track as well. Real good and crisp stereo of H&V is hard to find for me. I dunno what it is, but the one on SmileySmile just sounds so...messy, to me! I dunno! Finally, If there's one thing I dislike about BWPS, it's that they took out the first chorus of Vega-Tables! The one with the drum beat and vibraphone! It uses only the second chorus (the one with the "Ooolah, 'De Ooolah!" vocals) and I always hated that. That snare beat in the first is what makes it GROOVE, man! lol I know, though. I'm Nitpicky like that!

Another interesting fan compilation to make is Smile Live.
But I only know of live versions of the following:
Heroes and Villains Wonderful Surf's Up / Child is Father to the Man Vegetables Cool Cool Water Good Vibrations
Are there any other Smile songs The Beach Boys performed live (not Brian solo)?
