This must look like a last-ditch attempt to draw others into this section of the forum. Essentially, it's a more broad-based sequel to the "General Movie Topic", which died well over a year ago. And it can include more than just "movies", although the opening post is devoted to one we saw last night on Dutch TV. Una (2016) is a thoroughly engaging if psychologically harrowing watch: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Una_(film)

A Hard Days Night, for the first time in over 55 years - and it was just superb !
And... it's The Dig, not The Gift.

Great cinematography. Sort of on House of Cards idea.

Spiral - a great French cop show - it was, sadly, the last episode last night Sounds good, ed. It may end up on Dutch or Belgian TV, so I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the tip! You too, filledeplage, many thanks. It's airing now, you say? That's worth checking out.

We've watched this series before on Belgian TV but it's so well done we decided to watch it again when it resurfaced on a Dutch channel:
OK, Google Translate, do your stuff:
"An inspector goes in search of his own daughter's murderer.
"This fascinating series -- crime thriller meets psychological drama -- gathers the cream of Danish actors: Ulrich Thomson (Festen), Trine Dyrholm (The Legacy, Bauhaus), Søren Malling (Borgen, The Killing), David Dencik (Chernobyl), Nikolaj Lie Kaas (Series Q, Follow The Money) and Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards, Ride Upon The Storm). Moreover, the role of the murdered daughter is played by the real daughter of actor Ulrich Thomson!"

A week or so ago we watched Stan & Ollie (2018), largely because a favourite actor of ours, Steve Coogan, was playing Stan Laurel. Predictably, it was a film without too much depth and without too much action. Indeed, most fireworks came courtesy of the lads' wives, played by Nina Arianda and Shirley Henderson respectively. First-rate acting from Coogan and John C. Reilly all the same. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_%26_Ollie

As a gesture of good will, I have been progressively watching Riverdale with my daughter. But I don’t recommend it.

Now if, with jk’s blessing, I bend the title a little to “What have you been intending to watch recently (but no-one has had the good grace to get out of your grill)”, I heard an encouraging review of this film - Space Sweepers - screening on Netflix. I’m aiming for Saturday night, month TBD. www.netflix.com/title/81094067?s=i&trkid=13747225

Great movie, love the Coen Brothers - their films are studies of films, in a slightly less showy way than Tarantino. Eg, “This is a true story...” indicator at Fargo’s start is a reference to true crime films, and is also false. I recommend the subsequent Fargo series 1-3, I’m yet to catch up on 4. They’re set in the general similar region of the US, but not in Fargo per se. Gripping stuff though and a fabulous performance/s by Ewan MacGregor in S3. I happened to rewatch the Coen’s debut on telly last night - Blood Simple. For the first time in 25 years!!! If you haven’t seen it, it’s a gently disturbing subversion of Film Noir and Psych thriller genres that weaves a very complex tale of deceit, revenge and betrayal (constantly and in varying order). Watch.

Before Blood Simple started on telly, I was engrossed in this little film, A Ghost Story:
It’s a surprisingly moving and affecting meditation on loss, connection and destination, with some definite influence from David Lynch - eg a couple of drawn out scenes early in the piece, but stick with it. I will say the representation of the ghost is initially LOL, but ala Lars And The Real Girl, effective as opposed to ludicrous.

Besides Fargo, I've seen O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Big Lebowski (during which both my wife and I fell asleep ) and No Country for Old Men. It's clear the Coens' films require a special mindset and that this is definitely worth working on. I'd love to see TBL again -- I've heard so much about it since then. As for the soundtrack of TBL, it's wonderfully eclectic -- it would be worth seeing the film again just for the music!

Yeah, they make their own little universes based on a genre and then mess around within them - which allows the narrative to take unexpected turns, or not. Their approach, to me, seems to be very rooted in stuff like It’s A Wonderful Life etc, where characters are generally put through the grind and assisted by a sprinkling of magic, spiritualism or chance. Now, moving to the “film with good music” topic, my wife and I are enjoying a lazy saturday morn with rain out watching Lost In Translation, which I’m sure you’re well across:

It would be a lot more extraordinary if it were a true story.
Sorry, I don't mean to crap on your perfectly valid opinion. I'm glad you enjoy the show. But the historian in me has a real problem with novels and films that attempt to "inspire" audiences with a period drama that re-imagines the past to make it more palatable to current tastes. (Coming soon to Netflix: the exhilarating tale of how a high school girls' hockey player changed the world by leading the U.S. team to victory over the Soviets in the 1980 Olympics!)
At least when Tarantino does this kind of thing, it is with such over-the-top absurdity that no intelligent person would confuse it for legit history. But how many people who watch The Queen's Gambit actually know that there has never been a female world champion of chess?
