Yesterday afternoon it was Singin' in the Rain (1952) showing on good old Auntie (for non-Brits: an affectionate name for the British Broadcasting Corporation). What a wonderully heart-warming film -- American entertainment at its best! Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds were great (as was Jean Hagen) but for my money it was Donald O'Connor who stole the show. O'Connor seems generally to have had a tough time personally and professionally. (Happily, he was awarded a Golden Globe for his role of Cosmo Brown in SitR.) Here he is performing his heart out on "Make 'Em Laugh": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singin%27_in_the_Rain

As a gesture of good will, I have been progressively watching Riverdale with my daughter. But I don’t recommend it. We've been progressively watching PAW Patrol (in Dutch) with our five-year-old granddaughter. She loves it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAW_Patrol

K-9, though I only saw the last 10 minutes starting with the scene where he says “it’ll be snowing in Chicago”. Awesome joke btw.

One of my all-time favourite movie quotes consists of just four words (here at 0:40). We watched this skull-cruncher of a movie this afternoon (for the second time, in my case). I was literally trembling after it finished... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Kane

I've been watching a very violent, very involved series called Shadowplay. Set in post-WWII Berlin, it focuses on the history of two American brothers named Max and Moritz by their German mother (after the children's storybook characters). There isn't much in English about it online, so the IMDb page will have to do. The episode descriptions are woefully brief. This trailer is the best I could find:

On the evening before leaving for a week's holiday we watched Taxi Driver on the telly (we’d seen it once before in the cinema years ago). Ye gods -- De Niro, Scorsese and Bernard Herrmann are a match made in heaven... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_Driver

^^^^^ Harrowing, heart-breaking and hilarious by turns, I can't recommend this series highly enough. Its five episodes were shown on the weekdays of Dutch Pride Week. The soundtrack of mainly '80s music is a feast in itself.

So my girlfriend and I finished working our way through the Criterion BBS: America Lost and Found blu-ray box last night, and I can't recommend this thing enough. It contains seven films recorded under the auspices of BBS (Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider & Steve Baulmer) in the late 60s-early 70s: Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Last Picture Show, A Safe Place, The King of Marvin Gardens and Drive He Said. Of the seven, only Drive He Said is anything less than stellar, and is still worth a watch as Jack Nicholson's directorial debut. Assembled with Criterion's usual care, this deluxe package is an incredible value for $62.49 US. www.amazon.com/America-Lost-Found-Criterion-Collection/dp/B003ZYU3SC/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=bbs+america+lost+and+found&qid=1628373679&sprefix=bbs+americ&sr=8-1

I now recall seeing Drive, He Said at the Electric Cinema in London's Portobello Road in '72. Regrettably I can't remember anything about it (I may even have fallen asleep during it!), apart from a surreal scene where the protagonist is naked in a lab among all the animals he released. Thanks for jogging my memory! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_He_Said

A lugubriously engaging documentary (2015) about the tragic life of Svetlana Alliluyeva (1926–2011):

Foundation - Issac Asimov Thanks for the heads-up on this, I wasn't aware of it. I've read all the books so will be interested to see how it's been adapted (hopefully better than was done for His Dark Materials for example).
