Still obsessed with Inglourious Basterds. This is heart-warming:

From the sublime to the ridiculous. Still fixated on Inglourious Basterds, folks. Five of Aldo Raine's platoon of Basterds have prominent roles, in alphabetical order Donny Donowitz (The Bear Jew), Hugo Stiglitz, Omar Ulmer, Smithson Utivitch (The Little Man) and Wilhelm Wicki. Just one other gets a namecheck ("Dammit, Hirschberg!") just after 3:35 in this gory sequence:

Today it was the turn of The Last Waltz in the cinema. This was our first viewing since seeing it in 1978, the year of its release. It has certainly stood the test of time! Favourite moment? Probably Joni's "Coyote"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Waltz

Today it was the turn of The Last Waltz in the cinema. This was our first viewing since seeing it in 1978, the year of its release. It has certainly stood the test of time! Favourite moment? Probably Joni's "Coyote"...I meant my favourite guest moment! The Band -- all five of them -- were superb throughout. As for my favourite Band moment, it was "Don't Do It", the first song in the film but the last of that evening's performance. I love Marvin Gaye's original to bits but Garth, Levon, Richard, Rick, Robbie and a fantastic horn section (charts by Allen Toussaint) take it to another level entirely:

I remember reading about the sinking of the Estonia at the time, in 1994. One survivor recalled seeing children and old people sobbing at the bottom of a stair they were unable to climb -- the ship was listing horribly and taking in water fast and there was a dreadful storm in progress. Much ink has been spilt on this tragedy, up to and including a post-Cold War conspiracy theory. (The details are easy enough to find online.) Yesterday we watched the last two episodes of this excellent eight-part series. Warning for action film lovers: Estonia takes its time to unfold. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonia_(TV_series)

For any "Weird Al" Yankovic junkies, his amusing "biopic" πππππ: πβπ π΄π ππππππ£ππ ππ‘πππ¦ has recently been released in both physical and digital formats. It's a pretty fun watch with lots of great cameo appearances. And Daniel Radcliffe's portrayal of Al is hilariously intense.

I usually look in on Birds and Mammals of the Danish Forest (see my signature) several times a day, although the mammals are few and far between right now -- too cold!
I never scroll back to check on reported sightings on principle, so it's great that there's a separate clip of the very first sighting on the livestream of an otter! (Watch on YouTube.)

On the past three Saturday evenings, we've been watching season two of the thrilling BBC series The Capture (never saw season one) on VRT Canvas, a Belgian TV station. Now the original UK showing was in six episodes. The episode six we saw two days ago ended very abruptly -- not the way you'd expect a series to end. I looked around and discovered why. They make great beer and fries in Belgium but they do have some funny ideas at times. It transpires that theyβd redivided The Capture into eight episodes! Episodes seven and eight are planned for next week. Well, at least one episode will end the way it was intended to end! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Capture_(TV_series)

Orlando (Sally Potter, 1992, after Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel) is an extraordinary film, a visual feast with some classic Woolfian dialogue. The music's pretty cool too... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_(film)

When we were in the Baltic states in 2017 we saw this young girl playing a nyckelharpa on a street in Tallinn: Regrettably I can't find a video of her with this remarkable instrument but I did find this brief clip of her playing what the uploader thinks might be a viola da gamba. And who am I to argue? It's been up since July 2015 but until now has only had 121 views -- a shameful state of affairs. So I'm embedding it in my signature in the hope that this situation improves soon: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyckelharpa
