Question for those of you that have the liner notes ir some written explanation. Does the five-volume release contain sort of a straight up Stone Cold remastered version of each album? That is, proceeding all the new and otherwise unreleased tracks, is this also a start-to-finish version of the remastering of each of the records themselves. Thanks for the any help. Little hard to get that information just by looking at the listing on the app I was just looking at the track listing on the official Beach Boys website, and both Sunflower and Surf's Up show 2019 mastering. Woke up this morning, and it was already here. No waiting and wondering when it would arrive.
I'm now reading the book, and having a cup of coffee. Will begin to listen this afternoon after I get some shopping done.
This music is brotherhood. This is blood.

One complaint, the essay is really poorly written. Song title errors ("Looking Down Tomorrow"?) and repeated use of surnames throughout - one page has Mike Love's name in full five times. Bit of a bugbear of mine, it being what I do for a living. But the tracklist is still blowing my mind.

My favorite from the box: "Baby baby"! Shows they were as good as the Beatles! However, the singing? Are they making fun of disabled people? Too bad they didn't make a descent recording... and more rockers like this!!

I'm reading the liner notes right now and I can't find more appropriate words than these:
"The Beach Boys's catalogue follows you through life, like a musical calendar or diary. In these confusing days when everyone is desperate for a little rest, a little kindness, and a little peace of mind - The Beach Boys feel like home. They represent our past, present and most beautiful key.
Take Feel Flows with you wherever you go. And keep The Beach Boys close to your heart for your whole life."
Howie Edelson, NYC 2021
This is so damn true!

So far I only had the time to listen to the live and bonus tracks of discs one and two, and they sound great. Not only "Celebrate The News" is a great makeover, but the original mix of "Breakaway" sound just glorious. No as strangely muddy as the releases before. Only two complaints so far, the remix of Big Sur isn't as beautiful as the original, even though it brings forward some elements unnoticed by me, and the sound effects in "My Solution" have been nearly completely mixed out. Soundwise though pure bliss.
The book however is a letdown. The "essay" is pretty chaotic, printed in a size so old folks can read it without glasses, and the track information is subpar to what we got spoiled by with the SMiLE and Made In California box sets.

I'm listening to the YouTube feed of the FF box set while waiting for the physical set to arrive on my doorstep (any old time now), totally blissing out. "This Whole World" live brought me tears of joy (it's personal -- never thought a request the BBs played in concert for me would see an actual release).

Loving most of what I'm hearing, but one thing is baffling me. Why are there no chorus backing vocals on Seasons in the Sun? Carl's lead is nowhere near strong enough to be solo. Maybe if Al had sang that part it'd be a bit more understandable.
Now for some positivity to balance it out. The 2019 Remix of Two Can Play is incredible. The backing vocals that were muted on the mix I'm used to are such a lovely treat.

So, I just read the whole book for the box set and I surprised myself by getting really choked up. It's really great to hear comments from all the guys about each other and about certain songs and hear them say so many things that are my own sentiments. - Even Blondie's excitement about "It's a New Day" was just heartwarming.
I grew up with this music and it's always been very important to me. And you know, as you live your life and get interested in learning about musical history, you learn things you obviously wouldn't know when you're just listening to music. I didn't know when I was a child, but learned as a teen/young adult that this was really their most collaborative period and have understood that for the past 30-40 years of my life, but reading that shows it in a different way. I don't know why, it just hit me...
Anyway, there is so much good music on this boxset and I can't wait to comment on all of it, but I'm digging back into right now and my comments will have to wait until I have a bit more time.
My only disappointment is that the live tracks aren't dated, outside of the year. I know the 1993 show, has anyone confirmed the dates on all the other live tracks?

I wish I understood more about what Master Level means with the tidal music app, but I'm hearing parts of songs and instruments and textures that I never heard in a thousand previous listening so if someone can comment on why that would be and what that means acoustically at that level of loose less bitrate streaming then I would love to hear about it.
I've gotten through the album itself that is volume one's version of sunflower itself ,and then two live cuts : add some music and this whole world and so far everything is absolute gold.

Long Promised Road is from Carnegie Hall on November 23, 1972. Haven't A & B'ed it but pretty sure.
I'd also like to know dates and event sites for the other tracks especially in '71 & '73.

Can't help you on 71 and 73 but I am going to make a pretty good bet that Disney Girls from 1982 was recorded at Blossom Music Center near Cleveland. I know this because I was there. Dennis and Brian were absent for this show. When they started to play Disney Girls the recording equipment fed back into the speakers causing Mike to stop the song and inform us that indeed the show was being recorded live. Once the technical problem was fixed they started Disney Girls from scratch. The only other cut from that show that has seen light of day to my knowledge is Runaway which showed up on a special 25th anniversary collection in 1986.

Vinyl kids: just wanted to point out that the jacket print quality of the Sunflower and Surf’s Up copies that come in the vinyl set are of inferior quality to the original issues or any reissue I’ve ever owned or seen. It’s more like they are mock ups for the purposes of serving the set rather than being actual copies of the albums (if that makes any sense), so don’t run off and sell whatever copies you already own, like I know some folks already did

Either way, I won't be throwing away my original 70s LPs any time soon!

The quality of these editions are not bad at all, but they fall well short of what else is out there. But then, the wealth of extra material (even in the vinyl edition) is what really matters.

Well 9 p.m. in Los Angeles and now both the two volume album and the five volume album are available for immediate streaming on tidal app These albums are listed with the designation Master which is the highest possible designation for Quality streaming. Those of you who know about the technical details will know what this means in terms of lose less technology, and just upon hearing it these Master levels are better than Hi-Fi and better than CD and I can't wait to go drive around tomorrow Friday and listen to the entire five volumes one way or another. , so anyone else who's listening to this particular download listed at the master level of bitrate then I would be curious to hear what you think If you’re connecting to your car stereo via Blutooth, just check the bit rate specs (in your car manual) as it may down sample to CD quality - I’m not really up on current blutooth capability, but just a mention!

Well I don't have a reaction to all these particular details but let me just say that listening for about an hour and a half now I think this is the greatest of all archival beachboy releases and thanks so much to Mark and Allen for incredible scholarly work. It's like a whole new appreciation of the Beach Boys

Some more technical information would've been very cool, and we know its all available as Desper's excellent videos were full of it. But as it is, the book feels like a missed opportunity. Is much known about Poops/Hubba Hubba and why it wasn't issued at the time? And why Sound Of Free was a small scale Europe only release?
