I know there is already a long thread on this, but I just wanted to start one that doesn't have any speculation about what the box will encompass. I just wanted a thread to post any updates on a time frame for release.
Thanks!

I hope that the recent "hunter gate" fiasco did not derail the project. Back to a question that I posed several times before, is the 'Til I Die piano demo in the public domain now?
I ask this because the early version of "Slip on Through" was released last year so wouldn't the same logic apply to this track (assuming that it was on the release to preserve the copyright)?

Completely ignoring the "we couldn't back out of the same gig that REO Speedwagon could back out of" scandal...I think that the 2019 copyright extension release was only three tracks -- and one of which was essentially an outtake of what theoretically would be released -- is very promising in terms of a treasure trove we're hopefully about to get.
Copyright expiration or not, the fact remains that in the U.S., the material is still under copyright. I'm sure their money folks were looking into what they have to lose by losing out on copyright on this material in some countries versus how much they'd make by selling it in the States.

Yep, we are waiting it seems. Haven't we been here before?
Bruce Johnston, spring 1981:
The compilation album, if we get It out, will be the best album they'll ever have. Because it's gonna cover all the period from say '68,'69 on. It's gonna get the best of everything, like "'Til I Die," "Disney Girls," "Sail On, Sailor," "San Miguel." It's gonna have a lot of stuff on it. We're going to collage the "Smile" album in this compilation. We're gonna just take . . . go through the "Smile" album - Brian doesn't know this - and just take little sections of the tunes we have and put it out as kind of a sampler of the "Smile" album. 'Cause it'll be better as a teaser than the whole thing. It's great, but a lot of these things aren't finished. So it's better to go and collage them...

Except for the Smile thing...that sounds dangerously close to Ten Years of Harmony, which came out in...wait for it...1981.
Interesting that Bruce would seemingly casually include "San Miguel," which hadn't been released yet, in his description.

Yep, that was Bruce's quote for TYOH. I remember thinking SMILE IS COMING! HA!

A DJ at my local AM radio station (North Platte, Nebraska) was a major Beach Boys fan, and he did a phone interview with Bruce that summer, which was broadcast in five parts throughout the week. Bruce managed to mention each of the other five guys in the course of the discussion, and in Brian's case, he talked about how - with Carl out of the group temporarily - Brian was more involved onstage. When the DJ asked if Brian was currently active in the studio, Bruce just quickly said, "Well, we haven't recorded in a year," then talked about the upcoming anthology (more-or-less the same stuff he told Brad).

Considering Bruce mentions that Brian hadn't heard about them wanting to include pieces of SMiLE in the compilation, I wonder if when Brian did find out, he requested that the SMiLE stuff be omitted. Because I'm not sure why else they wouldn't include the SMiLE material; it would certainly make the compilation a whole lot more of an attractive purchase.
I find it rather comical how many times SMiLE material almost came out and then didn't: 1967, 1972, 1981, 1988, and then even after the track inclusions in the 1993 GV box set, the proposed sessions box set that was supposed to come out around 1997 got canceled after the Pet Sounds box set got delayed, and everyone had to wait until 2011 to get an official sessions box set.

You can add to that 1979 - Bruce told David Leaf (in his late '78 interview for the Pet Sounds newsletter) that he and Jimmy G. wanted to open L.A.(Light) with the "Rock, rock, roll, Plymouth Rock roll over" segment from SMiLE - but ultimately, Bruce said they decided against it since they wanted to respect Brian's wishes (meaning, it must not have been OK with him).

PSounds Magazine November 1978 David Leaf interviews Bruce explaining how the group will choose songs for the new album LA LIGHT. DL: You had (indicated) that the album might include some “SMiLE” tracks … BJ: I have decided that I’m going to wait until Brian would really give his permission to do it. Guercio wants to open the album with “Rock Plymouth Rock/Roll” and end with “Been Way Too Long”. I wanted to make up a collage, but I want Brian to be the one to put the collage together. I can tell he still feels funny about that stuff. You know, there a lot of “SMiLE” stuff intact …

Did BJ regard BWTL as a Smile track?

No, but I can KINDA imagine "DYLW" segueing into "Good Timin'", and "Shortenin' Bread" followed by a snippet of "BWTL" - which is probably how it woulda happened.

Those tracks seemed SO out of place on LA. LA would have to have had a different vibe to include those tracks, especially Worms.

Yeah, but "Shortenin' Bread" is equally out of place, and yet there it is!

Yeah, but "Shortenin' Bread" is equally out of place, and yet there it is! So true. Calendar Girl would have been out of place too, but I would have loved to have had that on there. And a BB version of Constant Companion with a Carl lead. And, It's Over Now would also have fit the LP.

Me? I'd have gone for Lookin' Down the Coast and California Feelin'. Neither are earth-shatterers but they'd fit the bill

Yeah, I thought about Good Timin’ but as great as it is, it’s featherlight after a Worms or similar. Full Sail sort of has similar initial themes to Worms (sailing ships) but is the complete opposite of the exciting dynamic and original Worms: Glad you mentioned Shortenin’ Bread, I know this didn’t happen but it’s a appearance is sort of a response to the BWTL inclusion concept - the inclusion of one of those legendary” Brian tracks.

Worms>Don’t Fight The Sea..etc

Maybe Bruce was refering to the 10 years of harmony that came out in 1981? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Years_of_HarmonyI know that Bruce tells something that will never be. I can recaL he talked in the 90s about a new dance version of Surfin that was better than released on the SIP cd.

Just occurred to me...
It'd be quite cool if this set had a version of "Feel Flows" with the "surface joy" lyrics left intact.

Starting to wonder if this set will not appear until the actual 50th anniversary of Sunflower’s release, which I believe was August?
I know we’d been aching for a February release, but August is starting to make a little more sense.
By then it might also have stopped raining here in the U.K., and potential buyers might be in more of a Beach Boys-like frame of mind.
