Does raise an interesting question though, what if anything will prompt another release of the catalogue? The entire catalogue, as per the 2fers of 1990 & 2000 ? Nothing. But, time's a-passin', and I can see memorial releases in the none-too-distant future. 😳

Well, this one flew under my radar ! "Little St. Nick" entered the UK singles chart for the first time at #96 on December 29th, rose to #57 the next week and then... dropped off. The band's first charting single (sort of) since 1996 and their collaboration with the Quo on "FFF" and in their own right since either 1991 - a reissue of "Do It Again" - or "Kokomo" in 1988.

SOS returns to the charts on the back of the Grammy salute #107 this week of 4/22. Thanks as ever to Mr. Mayo.

Following a nineteen week run in, somewhat spookily, its nineteenth appearence in the Top 200, Sounds Of Summer dropped off charts this week. Total weeks on the chart - 335.
I think it'll be back.

But, time's a-passin', and I can see memorial releases in the none-too-distant future. While I don't think it's very likely that there will be another physical reissue campaign of the original albums individually, I would be *extremely* surprised if a relatively bare-bones box set containing all of the albums did not eventually materialize. This is the trajectory that most '60s-identified acts have been following since about the late 2000s, and I think it's pretty much inevitable for the same to happen to the Beach Boys. In fact, had they signed to Columbia instead of Capitol way back when, it certainly would have happened already. And while the Beach Boys' catalogue is large compared to some of the artists who have received this treatment, it is nowhere near as large as (for example) Miles Davis' Columbia catalogue, which was released in such a box in 2009.

Do you think it would include Stars & Stripes, Summer in Paradise, Stack of Tracks, all the live albums (inc Knebworth)? Should it/would it include any bonus tracks?
I’d still rather see those digital-only CopEx releases get expanded physical releases before yet another slew of standard album reissues.
All pipedream stuff, it sometimes seems…

All pipedream stuff, it sometimes seems… My assumption is that any future Beach Boys "complete albums" box set would only contain releases controlled by Universal. I would expect Stacks to be there, and also Still Cruisin, but not Stars & Stripes (currently controlled by Entertainment One) or Summer In Paradise. The live stuff would depend on whether it's a "complete albums" or "complete studio albums" package -- both exist for artists of that era. Going by the form followed by other labels (and indeed, Universal themselves in many cases) it would be a low-effort affair recycling old CD configurations, but which ones are anyone's guess. Still, I wouldn't expect anything new. On the other hand, I wouldn't expect it to be all that expensive either. Frankly, I'm astonished such a product does not already exist. It makes me wonder if someone in the BRI partnership is opposed to it for whatever reason. It beggars belief that it has never been proposed.

Do we know if those other labels are able to be accessed by Iconic? There might be some interesting tracks and I would be interested in having those sessions as well. Both Stars and Strips as well as SIP which should have had the live versions of SIP as well as Kokomo.

I could be wrong, but as far as I know the deal with Irving Azoff just gave his group control over that which was already controlled by the Beach Boys themselves, so it would have no bearing on the ownership or distribution of (for example) their '60s albums or things like Stars & Stripes. Although Stars was distributed in some places by MCA (currently a Universal label like Capitol), the most recent reissue was distributed by Entertainment One which is not a Universal label. I think the album made its way to Entertainment One by means of a series of liquidations, mergers, and acquisitions from its original label (River North). In fact, Entertainment One's ownership is currently kind of up in the air -- at one point they were owned by Hasbro I think. Summer In Paradise, I have no idea.

What is interesting is that when I would load the CD for an iphone, the Stars and Stripes would split up into all the different tracks as though they were separate albums with different proprietorship rights. There are tracks out there that were not officially released in the same manner Knebworth did not have this.

Call me Nostradamus: Sounds of Summer returned - for the 20th time - to the Billboard Top 200 album chart this week at #176. My guess is that the "sales" these days are almost entirely streaming, but hey, a chart is a chart is a chart. As ever, thanks to Steve Mayo for the info.

Is Steve Mayo any relation to "Bob Mayo on the keyboards, Bob Mayo". Yes, I've listened to far too much classic rock radio over the years.

And back on the UK charts, with "LSN" sitting at #43 for the 4/1/24 rankings.
