Very simple reason - it's too expensive.

Very simple reason - it's too expensive. The box set is way too expensive, but would have thought the 2 CD / vinyl set might have made an impact.

Even the 2CD version is close to twice the price of the equivalent Feel Flows release.

Maybe SOS's impact is reflected in the sales of these other products?

Maybe SOS's impact is reflected in the sales of these other products? Or... maybe it's down to this thing called "Christmas" ? Just a thought, ol' pal.

I can confirm I seldom play (stream) the Christmas Album outside of Xmas. And then it goes into heavy rotation during Xmas week! 🎄 🎅

Even the 2CD version is close to twice the price of the equivalent Feel Flows release. Yeah, I was surprised at the price jump. That's why I made sure I got it the first week, when it was on sale. $25 plus tax, compared to $18 for Feel Flows.

It does seem illogical. Feel Flows showcased two albums which are regularly cited as being amongst the group's best work, yet a box set concentrating on two lesser mentioned albums is hiked up in price.
It seems illogical until you take corporate greed into account.
Iconic Artists, if you're monitoring this thread, I'm happy to pay a reasonable (and consistent) amount for Beach Boys niche products, but perhaps you need to factor in the global cost of living crisis when pricing these things. Also you need to consider the critical standing of the albums you are showcasing.
Interesting question however: Does IA set the recommended price, or does the vendor? My understanding is that the manufacturer sets the wholesale price, then its up to the vendor.

My understanding is that the manufacturer sets the wholesale price, then its up to the vendor. The price of most things is going up. I would imagine that manufacturing costs are rising which puts the squeeze on everyone from the top down. One way that I’ve seen box sets be cheaper is using blu ray. The xtc / Steven Wilson remix releases were around £30 and that was for 5.1 mix, two stereo versions, instrumental version of the album and demos etc. with a nice booklet too. Zappa recently showed how it can both ways with the Hot Rats set being about £150 and needlessly containing a board game and oversized box etc. While the recently released Waka/Wazoo set was only £50 but again didn’t have a stupidly big box or gimmicks and featured a blu ray. I don’t know if the book in the SOS set is better than the Feel Flows one but that was certainly a factor in me not buying it at full price, the Feel Flows book was a bit light on content. I would imagine both sets could have been put out in more efficient packaging. Whether that would have impacted costs much I don’t know but maybe. But yeh, as many have said SOS was a watershed moment for me as a longtime fan, first archival set I didn’t buy. Waiting to see the ‘Sail On Sailor 1972 Now On Sale!’ thread before I get a physical copy 😅

Whatever it is it seems to be happening across the board. But yeah who knows if how much of the SOS price point being larger was greed vs costs. One thing I hope is that they are getting the vibe from the audience that a higher price makes for lower initial sales. And with that vibe I hope they go ‘oh ok we’ll make it cheaper and maybe cut back on packaging etc’ rather than ‘ok shelve that 15BO / Love You set’ 😭

Absolutely Mark, that's a set I certainly won't be missing!
I hear you on the packaging. The Love You set should come in a cheap cardboard box with a design by Dean Torrance,
Potential names of the set:
Pat Her on the Butt
Wife on Mars
Love is a Woman (one for transgender people there)
So Cold I go Brrrrrhhh

The benchmark among current boxsets has to be the Jethro Tull booksets programme. Each album remix/remastered, usually by Steve Wilson – renowned as one of, if not the very best in his field – plus a plethora of bonus tracks and live gigs on CD, usually a DVD or two containing various mixes of the album (inc surround) and bonus material, sometimes also the live material, plus a book packed with photos and interviews and session details, anything between 2/3 and 5/6 discs, and around £40 tops. Neatly – and consistently sized (and therefore more collectible to the OCD among us) to fit on a bookshelf. Anything else is frippery.

Exactly my point about the XTC / Steven Wilson stuff. You can do this for cheaper just by not making the packaging needlessly oversized 😂 Puts me in mind of the light up smile session set and the Amazon exclusive smile session set with the cut out stuff behind the windows 😂 And yeah it’s nice to have stuff be easily storable and uniform. I must wear my ‘mental health awareness hat’ and, at the risk of seeming pedantic (!), mention that liking things neat and/or in uniform order etc is in no way related to or relatable with OCD. I know it’s used often this way / no offence meant or taken but part of my work is this kind of awareness. So I’ll needlessly bring my work here 😂 As we needlessly continue to fill the chart thread griping about prices 😂 Sorry Andrew 😅🙏

Big Tull fan here. The way the Tull sets are packaged is one of the best way to do sets, imo. You get 5 discs most of the time, they're reasonably priced, chock full of photos and info, and the book size is perfect. I'd love to see the BBs take a page from the Tull package designers for future sets.

(Before you ask, no, I’ll never have enough… at the right price!)

When I started getting into the group in the early 90s the 60s twofers were such great packages, bonus tracks and great liners. But yeah now with the Tull / XTC model described above how amazing would it be to get an update of those. Having a blu ray or dvd for space / live content etc, new liners etc, haha I’m salivating 😂 Does raise an interesting question though, what if anything will prompt another release of the catalogue?

Does raise an interesting question though, what if anything will prompt another release of the catalogue? The entire catalogue, as per the 2fers of 1990 & 2000 ? Nothing. But, time's a-passin', and I can see memorial releases in the none-too-distant future.
