OK, Smile-Holland is gonna be mad if we continue with this. Not the British version of "mad", but the American version! Mikie, whether it’s an American Spring or a British Winter we’re discussing here, I don’t mind. As long as we solve the disappearance of Bruce’s moustache we’re good... 🙂

Yeah the Coventry photo was taken either Nov 22 1970 or the next morning for the German publication Bravo Magazine. There are also photos from the same day of the BBs playing bagpipes and flutes

This was taped in March of 1971. Looks close. Pork chop sideburns on Dennis. Looks like the same suit on Mike. Girls notice that stuff... Wasn't it actually February '71, while they were in town for their first Carnegie Hall gig?

A 90 minute car ride each way between the two cities.

Bagpipes! There you go...
And the Coventry pic in colour.
And lastly, another one from the November 18th taping of Top Of The Pops
Got all those from Dutch pop magazines...

...and the last one before this topic really turns into a moustache pistache. This pic looks like from at around the same time as the previous ones, WITHOUT the moustache. This particular one was used for a Dutch comp LP from 1971/2. But there's more pics from this photo sessions around. Makes me wonder if this one was taken in December 1970 when they were in The Netherlands.
Within a few days I expect to post about the December 1970 Dutch concerts. From the announcements until the reviews and fog-stories. Be patient...

This is the first "Live In London" album I ever bought. Capitol label from Holland w/gatefold sleeve. So......Live in London was recorded during the shows in London on December 8, 1968, but it looks like the picture on the LIL album cover from Holland was taken later. I always thought this album was released in 1970 (as advertised now on Ebay) same year as the original UK release, but according to the CD liners, the Live In London album Holland didn't come out until 1972. Looks to me like the album cover shot was from 1969 or more likely 1970. Al didn't have a beard yet in '70.
My avatar that you see on the left is one of two pictures (outtake) taken by Steve Desper at Brian's house in Bel-Air in 1971. Bruce obviously has a mustache.

That David Frost photo is from the appearance taped on March 1 1971. They'd played Carnegie Hall then headed to Ohio to play in Columbus, then returned for a show in Boston on Feb 28 and then the next day taped Frost in New York.

Wasn't it actually February '71, while they were in town for their first Carnegie Hall gig? There was a show on February 24, 1971 at Carnegie Hall, and they played Boston Symphony Hall on February 28. I had read that they went the next day for a TV taping, which would be March 1st. Andrew's site says March 1, 1971. And that Cool, Cool Water/Forever was released that day as well. brianwilson.websitetoolbox.com/beach-boys-at-carnegie-hall-feb-24-1971-the-view-from-row-3-7829793 (nice review) members.tripod.com/˜fun_fun_fun/2-23-71.html (this show was the 28th) The Youtube says Mike Douglas but wasn't it David Frost? The background behind the musicians looks more like a studio stage than a big venue. It is too bad that there is such a small amount of video.

The Youtube clip is misnamed by the way-it is David Frost not Mike Douglas. After 1969, BBs didn't appear again as a group on Mike Douglas until 1980-though Brian did an interview and so did Mike and Al. The info is all in my book and on AGD's site.

It's Coventry Cathedral. Look at the window behind this statue. Cool! I'm from Coventry and was at the Cathedral on Sunday, taking band pictures, but it closed before we got the change to take any inside the old Cathedral. Gotta recreate this...

Two Peters diverged in a yellow wood and one......one took the road less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.

No, the buildings in the DGNTW video are part of the Brighton (UK) West Pier complex. Very little of it exists today. The BBs were located in the nearby bandstand pavilion. Here's the Wikipedia article on the West Pier: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Pier

While we're in the neighborhood, the "You Need a Mess of Help" video was also shot in Brighton, at the Royal Pavilion.

I’m starting a series of (translated) articles on the three December 1970 concerts in The Netherlands. The most familiar one is the Amsterdam (Friday) nightconcert on December 18th (after midnight, so in fact on Saturday 19th), which – due to heavy fog in The Netherlands – was delayed, and only started on half past 5. But two other concerts were held in NL as well, on Saturday December 19th (again after midnight, so in fact on the 20th) in Rotterdam , and an evening concert in The Hague on Sunday the 20th.
The articles were found online on a website that has released the complete newspaper archives of several national and regional newspapers. Take into account that regional newspapers also report about national affairs. What makes some of these articles interesting, is that several regional newspapers are from the concert area’s. But almost all national newspapers are/were based in Amsterdam or Rotterdam, which also helped getting some expanded reviews. But it’s interesting to see that a few regional newspapers from other parts of the country also paid attention to the event, both the concerts in general and specifically the Amsterdam concert and the (cause of the) delay. In a way perhaps not that surprising though, as the weather conditions and the consequences for air traffic were big news that weekend. So for journalists it was only logical to report about the BB as well in conjunction with that.
The papers that I consulted are: - NRC (national newspaper, at the time based in Rotterdam) - Telegraaf (national newspaper, based in Amsterdam) - Trouw (national newspaper, based in Amsterdam) - De Tijd – Dagblad voor Nederland (former national newspaper, at the time based in Amsterdam) - De Volkskrant (national newspaper, based in Amsterdam) - Het Vrije Volk Nederland (former national newspaper, at the time based in Amsterdam) - Leeuwarder Courant (northern regional newspaper, based in Leeuwarden) - Leidsch Dagblad (western regional newspaper, based in Leiden (near The Hague and Rotterdam) - Leidse Courant (former western regional newspaper, based in Leiden (near The Hague and Rotterdam) - Nieuwe Leidsche Courant (former western regional newspaper, based in Leiden (near The Hague and Rotterdam) - Nieuwsblad van het Noorden (former northern regional newspaper, at the time based in Groningen) - Het Parool (western regional newspaper, based in Amsterdam) - Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant (south western regional newspaper, based in Middelburg) - De Vrije Zeeuw (former south western regional newspaper, at the time based in Terneuzen)
I’ll post these translations in several parts. This first part consists of articles and announcements from late November 1970, and give a bit more details on the venue, the support act, and other scheduled activities.
--- PART 1 ---
More to come... part 2 will continue with the first news about the fog and the BB delay...
