Switching to 1972 again (still busy translating articles regarding the December 1970 shows)…
A footnote only perhaps. Shortly before their return to the U.S. on August 3rd a couple of Beach Boys (plus a few other familiar faces) were present at a farewell/beach party at the Pier of Scheveningen, near The Hague. This is mentioned in Badman’s book.
The beach party only made it to a few – mostly regional – newspapers. But at least one of them gave a good picture of the party. The other one I only added because of the picture.
The Pier van Scheveningen still exists, although it has lost a lot of it’s grandeur. For a while it was even considered to demolish it. A couple of years ago an investment company bought it and since then renovation of the complex has slowly started. The Belle Amie Club that was situated in the tower island, moved to another location in The Hague in 1973. It closed in 1985. In case the name Tee Set rings a bell: a Dutch pop band that had quite a few hits locally, two of them doing reasonably well internationally: “Ma Bell Amie”, and “She Likes Weeds” (the latter being banned in several countries because of obviously not-so-subtle title…)

Thanks Klaas! Great stuff. Note that Badman does have the "farewell" but got a lot of facts wrong. He said they then went home-but as the article shows-they were still staying longer. In fact they left Holland on August 15 to start a tour in the U.S the next day. Badman lists some shows with incorrect dates-such as that August 8 listing that you included in your excerpt-in actuality that show was August 21 1972.

Yep, forgot to mention that. Only reason I added that pic is because he did have the date of the party correct, and the info on that (except for the last sentence) is pretty accurate.
I like that picture with Carl, Mike, Marilyn, Audree, and others (I don't recognise), holding those new Marcella singles. The release of that single in The Netherlands was also in August. The date it charted here was Sept. 2nd, stayed in the charts for 6 weeks and made it to the #20 spot. And about that Amsterdam book. How many of those made the trip back to the U.S.?...

Here 2 other pictures from the Scheveningen party on Aug. 3rd 1972. I got these from a Dutch pop magazine (OOR) from 1997, that has a lengthy article on the silver anniversary of the Holland album and the BB stay in The Netherlands. Still on my list to translate for you.
The picture below shows both Mike and Peter Tetteroo, owner of the Belle Amie club (where the beach party was held), and singer of the Dutch pop group Tee Set.

Here's another shot of Bruce in his Red Jacket. This is a SPAIN Release from about 1974...of the Hite Morgan stuff. Have never seen this released until I came across it on Ebay today. Can anyone confirm where this group photo may have been taken? Was it in the Netherlands, or somewhere else in Europe? Dogbone

I'd go with 1970 or early 1971, because Carl has a beard and Al doesn't.

This was taped in March of 1971. Looks close. Pork chop sideburns on Dennis. Looks like the same suit on Mike. Girls notice that stuff...

I believe the photo is from the press conference held on the day of their arrival in London-November 16 1970.

I'm back home for a couple of days so I thought it might be an idea to get Detective Inspector Sneaky on the case, mindful always not to stray too far from this really wonderful thread initiated by Klaas.
If the two pic sleeve photos were indeed taken on the same day then according to the Getty Images site, that would have been November 16th 1970, which would also reinforce Ian’s assertion that this was the band’s London press conference. Clothing, hairstyles and crucially Bruce’s ‘tache are identical:

And Mike is still wearing that distinctive heavy tweed suit during their November 18th taping of Top Of The Pops, lip-syncing to “Tears In The Morning”:

He was still getting his money’s worth out of that suit more than a week later. I can personally vouch for the fact that he was still wearing it on November 27th because I was standing behind him at one of the bars in the Club Fiesta nightclub in my now home town of Stockton on Tees. Although Flame were billed to appear with them at this venue they didn’t show. However, they were certainly around, and this photo is featured in Badman as depicting them at a night club on their European tour. Bruce’s facial hair is still intact, which puts this photo as either having been taken at the Fiesta in Stockton or at their sister club the Fiesta in Sheffield, where they had a residency from November 30th to December 6th:

At some point during the northern Britain part of their tour they were snapped at this ruined abbey/monastic house, and I’m guessing that this was maybe in the middle of their Sheffield series of concerts. Perhaps some of our Yorkshire members might be able to identify the location (come on Manning, get your thinking cap on). I’ve already eliminated the usual suspects from North Yorkshire such as the ruined Abbeys of Fountains, Whitby, Bolton, and Bylands. I rather fancied Rievaulx Abbey for it but I can’t really match up with any of the images on Google, and I’m not that familiar with any ruins further south towards Sheffield. Although I can’t seem to find it on the internet, the photo on Page 283 of Badman shows them ‘experiencing northern Britain in late November as the European tour continues.’ What makes that photo interesting is that the boys are wearing the same outfits as in this ‘ruin’ photo, but Bruce’s ‘tache has gone AWOL. My best guess would be that he shaved it off sometime during their Sheffield Fiesta residency, or he might even have done it in the tour bus after the ‘ruin’ pic. Who knows, who dares to speculate? I've tried unsuccessfully to scan and upload that pic here, but apparently the file exceeds the 1MB limit. Maybe we could stretch this out into a whole new thread – "Broocie’s ‘Tache Is Missing”. Or perhaps not.

It's Coventry Cathedral. Look at the window behind this statue.

Cheers Emdeeh, I was way off with the geography.
It's 92 miles from Sheffield to Coventry so that equates to a bloody good sight-seeing ride out for the day for our boys.

Well, yeah, I guess that's another plausible explanation for them being there. Thanks for always keeping me right, Andrew.
They must have come over with a very restricted wardrobe if they were all still wearing the same clobber on the same day a week later (Badman pg 283) and looking absolutely nithered (that one's for Mikie and Silken, at no extra charge ) huddled in the lee of a dry stone wall in northern England.

Lessee. Here is how "Clobber" is used by us Yanks in the U.S. Just so happens I used the word in my extensive vocabulary the other day. To hit someone hard. Strike, slap, smack, cuff, punch, beat, thrash, thump, batter, belabor, drub, hook, pound, smash, slam, welt, pummel, hammer, bang, knock, swat, whip, flog, cane, sucker-punch, give someone a good beating/drubbing, box someone's ears. Treat or deal with harshly. To defeat overwhelmingly. "Clobber" as used by the British. The word was used extensively by the British Air Force in the 40's, possibly related to bombing. Possibly echoic. Clobber principally has to do with clothing, accessories, or gear. To dress smartly. Clobber up "to patch old clothes for reuse." "Nithered". Dialect in Northern England/Scotland meaning "very cold". Also, "to shiver with cold". The condition one finds oneself in after spending an appreciable amount of time in freezing conditions. The kind of cold where you can't feel your fingers, toes or nose anymore. Usually colder than a witch's........................nose. "Lee". Old English. The side of an object or building, cove, harbor, ship that is sheltered by the wind or cold. Shelter protecting from the elements. Not to me confused by the name "Lee" or "loo". OK, Smile-Holland is gonna be mad if we continue with this. Not the British version of "mad", but the American version!
