Of course on Saturday all Dutch newspapers reported about the weather conditions and the problems that came with it, specifically at Schiphol Airport. But as the concert’s delay happened at night, most newspapers didn’t give notice of the delayed BB concert in Amsterdam yet. That is – for certain the morning papers didn’t; a few evening papers did though. Here’s how a few of them reported about it that Saturday.

2000 men on the streets
Beach Boys too late due to fog
From our pop associate
AMSTERDAM, Dec. 19th – The two-thousand people crowd, who swarmed at the Concertgebouw last night at 12 o’clock for the concert by American close harmony pop group the Beach Boys, had to exercise patience for two and a half hour. They were notified that the plane that carried the group [to Schiphol] had to divert to Brussels, due to fog. There they were rushed into waiting road transportation, in order to still satisfy the Amsterdam audience with a matinee performance. In the mean while the hall of the Concertgebouw was locked up tight, so that the audience had to see if there was a residence for them elsewhere.

Schiphol Airport closed, many stranded tourists to the south by train
(from one of our reporters)
SCHIPHOL – yesterday and this morning the continuing fog disrupted hundreds of Christmas vacations. Numerous air passengers that planned on flying to Switserland, Austria, or sunny destinations in the south, weren’t able to leave, because the fog made air traffic impossible almost all of yesterday and this morning.
Yesterday planes were able to take off, but after that tenths of flights had to be cancelled. As fog was predicted for today as well, many holidaymakers decided to travel to their (often booked) holiday destination. That gave the Railway company a lot of extra passengers yesterday.
For that extra facilities were needed, as the NS [Dutch railway company] already has his hands full of the extra international Christmas traffic. For example yesterday two extended night trains drove to Italy (through Switzerland and Austria), so that with a lot of improvisation 200 to 300 air travelers extra could be taken care of.
Holidaymakers weren’t the only victims of the fog. Many other travelers were also severely restricted in their opportunities. Among those were – among others – pop group the Beach Boys, who were supposed to perform in Amsterdam yesterday evening, but got stuck in London.

Beach Boys: Tears in the early morning
AMSTERDAM, Dec. 19th – The proliferate increase of pop groups that arrive too late at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw starts to take unhealthy variety of shapes. Groups appear on stage later and later; the audience leave the Concertgebouw later and later, causing those wrecks – overwhelmed by sleep – to frustrate the economic life more and more. Concerts of The Moody Blues, Sly & The Family Stone, and Frank Zappa are recent examples; the Beach Boys’ concert will probably become the biggest example in the Amsterdam concerts history: the boys of the beach started their concert at 5 o’ clock this morning, and with that started a record that organizer Paul Acket will memorize for a long time.
Acket already started getting nervous on Friday afternoon, when the Beach Boys out of London laconically announced that they went back to their hotel again, because thousands of people at London Airport tried to reach the European mainland. Due to fog most of them, among which the Beach Boys had to stop these attempts. Acket then hired a charter plane, which didn’t find an opportunity to land on Schiphol. The plane diverted to Brussels, from where many, many taxis brought The Beach Boys and the group The Flame to Amsterdam. It was 5 o’ clock in the morning when the concert could start.
Without going into the details at this malicious hour, one can argue that because of all this wrangling to get to Amsterdam the Beach Boys clearly showed less class than at their previous concerts in the capitol.. the balance between the instruments and the vocals couldn’t be called perfect to say the least. Especially the 8-men orchestra showed little connection with the group they supported. But the audience – after 5 hours of waiting – had come to finally hear (whether or not balanced) as many hits as possible of Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Bruce Johnston. And those hits were played: Good Vibrations, God Only Knows, Sloop John B., Cottonfields, and their most recent one, Tears In The Morning, and others, in a fast tempo, for almost one and a half hour.
The support act, The Flame, surprised with an intrusive performance. A repertoire of pretty much only subdued songs were played in a Beatles-like style. The solo singer / solo guitarist showed an almost brilliant phrasing on his guitar. With his voice that same boy (he didn’t look older than 15 years) did things a pop singer can’t do without competing for the prize of the highest step of the pop ladder. When an album [of this group] is released I hope to get back on this discovery.
Other concerts are held tonight in Rotterdam, tomorrow in The Hague. This morning it was 7 o’ clock when the audience left the Concertgebouw. Was it last time that – in response to a Frank Zappa concert – I wrote that the life of popstar is not a rose-strewn path, I can say now that the life of the pop audience doesn’t get any easier either.

Pop group still has a lot of success
Beach Boys not to been seen for 5 hours
(From our correspondent in Amsterdam)
A pop group that is able to cope in the international musicworld for 10 years, is a super group. When it comes to these type of groups, in case of the U.S., one can’t think of a better example than the Beach Boys, who proved their indestructible popularity early this morning in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, by arriving on stage almost 5 hours too late, but yet found world’s most enthousiastic audience in the hall.
Instead of just after midnight, the Beach Boys started Saturday morning at around 5 o’ clock, with an almost one and a half success show, after their plane at first wasn’t able to leave London, and then had to deviate to Brussels for a landing.
Organiser Paul Acket then let the 5 singer-musicians hurriedly drive over to Amsterdam where the Beach Boys gave the best concert imaginable.

Beach Boys let the night audience wait until half past five
For a at half past eleven Friday evening still sold out venue the American beatgroup the Beach Boys performed at half past five in the morning in the capitol’s music temple.
Forced by a lack of public transport, the audience that had come over from the region appeared to have stayed in the hall, when the cool quintet from Los Angeles appeared on stage to launch a mix of old and new repertoire, something for everyone. Especially the song “Tears In The Morning” was grist to the mill of the quickly awakened audience. Too bad that both Al Wilson [??] and Brian Jones [!!!] were absent.
