Salty: yep - will dig into when I have the time. This one was an easy grab. Ah, you hero. Can I add one more onto the looming stockpile of questions while I'm here? 1. H&V chorus puzzle - What specifically about this puzzles you?2. Tones March 31 mystery - All indications are that this was a session to add additional instrumental overdubs to the track from March 3 (perhaps wiping the vocals that had been recorded on March 13). Billy Hinsche is once again listed as one of the musicians on this March 31 session, giving credence to the theory that this was a "Carl Wilson-produced" overdub (since Billy was Carl's brother-in-law, after all).
And: 3. I have a very limited transcription of the AFM contract for the December 19 '66 Heroes and Villains date that says some musicians were only around from 1pm to 4.30pm of the 1pm-6pm session. Who stayed for the extra time? Hal (session leader) and Diane (session contractor) were both paid $325.40, Chuck was paid $162.70, and everyone else was paid $101.68...except Sid Sharp, who was paid two cents less (he was initially marked down for what appears to be $122.00, but that was crossed off and replaced by a handwritten note of "101.66").

Anyone know what's up with this Wouldn't It Be Nice mix?

That's the same mono mix as used on the 1986 Made In USA comp: apparently when they compiled the album, the original master, with Mike's vocal double tracked, had gone missing (it was later found) so they had to make do with this alternate (inferior) mix. I think they had to use it on Still Cruisin' too.

Given that it's a Bruce & Terry recording, I'd be astonished if it wasn't cut at Columbia... but given the date and participants, Western is also a distinct possibility. As for musicians, very likely the Crew.

As for musicians, very likely the Crew. Given that Columbia was right across the street from Western, it's quite possible that it was cut there the same day that "It's Not Me" was cut at Western. But next time I ask the Local 47 for a dip into the archives, I'll add this one to the list.

Did the obvious thing, and asked Bruce: his reply just hit my inbox. " ALL B&T tracks were recorded at Columbia Studio A with The Wrecking Crew".

What sessions in late Summer/early Fall prior to the completion (or release) of GV had all or most of the Boys in attendance, as far as is known?

I'm guessing the vocal ones ?

Whoopsies! Forgot to mention it would need to be at Western and within 10 weeks before the completion of GV, maybe back to mid-July but probably August through September.
I'm thinking the best fit is Brian, Carl, and Dennis on August 25 or September 1 but maybe I'm missing something.

A session(s) at Western with all or several BBs in attendance from mid July to September 21.
Whoopsies again!!! Not necessarily only a GV session.

Questions for younger (or older) ears:
August 25 Wonderful has Brian and Dennis in attendance. Is there evidence of any of Carl or the other Boys?
September 1 GV, shows Brian, Dennis, and Carl in attendance. Is there any evidence of any of the other Boys?
September 8 Holidays, any evidence of Boys beyond Brian, Dennis, and Carl?
Is there any evidence of Boys other than Brian, Dennis, and Carl on any of the Persuasion tapes?
Apologies if some of these is obvs and I've missed or cocked it up.

Hey, if anybody wants to help a brother out, I've been at a loss trying to find recording dates for the following segments of "Heroes & Villains". I'm sure if anybody knows, it would be someone who frequents this board. Put your knowledge to the test and see if you can ID any of these! - The Brian/Mike verse 1&2 co-lead
- The "three score and five" verse vocal
- The acapella verse/backing vocal (the barbershop one ending with "dum de doobie doo wah-ah-ah")
- The Durrie Parks "children were raised/ often wise" with harpsichord
- The "la la la/ stand or fall" verse vocal (I assume this one is Smiley vintage, but I don't think I've ever heard a session for it.)
BONUS QUESTIONS: - Are we certain "Barbershop with spacey effect" is actually from December 13? I'm sure it's just me, but I always thought the "sunny down snuff" verse that goes with it didn't come along until much later in the game.
- Why did Brian ditch Mike's "sunshine" vocal on the fade to Cantina that was literally recorded the same day he mixed it?
Sorry in advance if any of these are obvious answers that I've somehow overlooked, but my mind is going numb trying to keep all this data organized in my brain.

Wow, talk about service. You, sir, are a rock star. Do you work for the Beach Boys in their tape library, or is your memory just that immaculate?

Is the version of “Walkin’” on the Sun Flower reel (as described in the newest ESQ) the same version that was released on the 1968 CE set?

I would imagine so, except it probably doesn't cut the vocal before Brian says, "F**k, I can't sing this bitch."

Question for AGD, if he happens to read this.
You mentioned hearing some tapes of love you tracks before Carl got his hands on them.
Wondering if it was decent quality sound or pretty rough? Good enough shape that they could theoretically be released to the public one day? Or more like someone holding up a tape recorder to a speaker?
I know you said they weren’t too pleasant but still would be very curious (i.e., would fork over cash to BRI) to take a listen.

Iffn the Copyright Extension programme is still going in 2027, I'd guess they might see the light of day. Carl basically polished them, and sweetened them too. The originals are sparser.

It wouldn't be accurate to say that they're what Brian left before Carl took the reigns, more just a reel of rough mixes for the album in progress missing a lot of vocals. Many of the parts added later were Brian and the extra overdubs do feature everyone in the group at some point. I've heard 8/12 of them (not including Ding Dang or Good Time here) and the tracks are pretty much all there instrumentally, except for the guitar in Roller Skating Child, tambourine in I'll Bet He's Nice, tambourine in Love is a Woman and some of the drums in the latter. It's mainly vocals and mixing choices that set them apart.

Love Is A Woman, Mona, Airplane, Let's Put Our Hearts Together, and I'll Bet He's Nice are out there in demo form. I've also heard a few other 'Love You' with tracks/vocals isolated.
