Just watched the God only knows with Brandi Carlile and John Legend and it is spectacular and I remember now that the very final moment: the song is over and everyone is cheering and they introduce each other and take an old school bow, and beach boys are there enjoying; and Brandi carlile, and a moment of great excitement and joy and ceremony, simply shouts out for all the house to hear, the Beach Boys! She said, The Beach Boys and the house went mad with cheers and joy including this reviewer. She said the Beach Boys, and maybe with five Beach Boys as a direct referent, it's the last time we're going to hear that old school joyous Show Business cry Ed sullivan style, The Beach Boys! Funny, no one thought Joni Mitchell would perform again.

Paul jb,
If you saw the traffic on the 101 freeway last night going both ways in an Uber and saw what life was like on the street in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater right next to Gloria Swanson's footprints, you would agree with me that getting to the show was in fact one of the greatest accomplishments of my life!
On a serious note, I listened to All Summer Long today and Beach Boy music sounds different to me than it did before yesterday's show.

I really dug that Pentatonix performance.
And Nora Jones did a nice job making Warmth of the Sun her own.
Nice group of performers. Sure to be a top notch program.

Pentatonix were wonderful indeed.
I had not thought of it but I assume the documentary filmmakers were there chronicling this event for this upcoming famous documentary. The standard Brian Wilson documentary ends by ignoring the Beach Boys and saying Brian tours the world with his great band and he doesn't need those other guys. That's how love and mercy the movie ends and long promised Road as well if I remember correctly. Great to see the boys together and acknowledge both individually and together here, and I hope the documentary will have as its telos this Grammy event and who knows what other glories might occur afterward.

The clips they played seemed like they were from a documentary that had already been produced, with the graphics and all. Any idea which one?

Oh, all old and well worn clips from various archive were played throughout the tribute.

Yes I should have finished my thought. I hear all the Beach Boys music now as if through the ears of the various performers who interpreted it in the tribute, so I would say there's a general intensity to listening to the beach boys now and a richness after hearing all the great artists sing their own versions of the music in which they emphasized certain harmonic elements or vocal elements. In a word I guess I'm listening better to The Beach Boys after seeing how a series of great artists listened and recreated Beach Boy music. Nothing special really just, in a word , heightened appreciation for the unbelievable greatness of the Beach Boys

Before the show started as I was able to Chronicle in taking some photographs, Mike had gone over to Brian, and I think reached out his hands to him and did not Embrace him per se but I think took Brian's hands or put his hands on Brian's shoulders and said something to him, and then the five Beach Boys assembled facing away from me to take a photo.
Don't know if that was an official photo by the videographer or documentary maker or the Grammys or the Dolby Theater or just Jackie wanting to capture the moment or whatever, but it's a photo I would very much like to see and I assume we'll get some official release and promotion as the promotion of the show unfolds.
and I'm waiting for some reaction from The Beach Boys to tell us what happened, tell us what they talked about, if they're willing to share, tell us how they felt about seeing their work glorified in this way.
Somebody once said maybe in a playful way in this thread or another part of the discussion group that by all rights a bunch of artists should march by The Beach Boys and bow down to them, and this was something light-hearted, but it turns out that's kind of exactly what happened. Everybody who performed looked up with the Beach Boys and bowed in one way or another, showing the tremendous gratitude for the music and for the influence.
I know the show is over and I have squeezed out of my imagination and creativity as much commentary as I possibly can , and now we will see what fruit is born from the seed planted that night at the show...

Thanks, newbbfan--as a second-generation lover of the band, I was thrilled by the youthful energy on display in the clips--and what we're seeing on YouTube is much more authentic and unvarnished than what we'll see when the show is actually broadcast. A great deal of love and respect from a wide range of "au courant" popular music luminaries--which, of course, is only as it should be--and, thankfully, you could see varying levels of performance anxiety crop up as these young(er) upstarts tried to up their game to pull off credible covers of so many classics. There was so much evidence of "I think I just passed my audition with royalty" flashing across their faces as they finished their performances. Some were really good, some not so good, and a few were downright odd--but the underlying acknowledgment that the Beach Boys are the last great band spanning the major footprint of rock history was palpable throughout the proceedings. Love, respect, and joy prevailed.
That said, don't get your hopes too set on a grand reconciliation as a result of this--we can think and wish and hope and pray, of course. And stranger things have happened. Hearing how the Beach Boys' music carried through a range of performances from younger (and--let's be fair but frank--less accomplished) artists is the key takeaway here: "our guys" really were--and are--the best of all time.

Robin that is such an eloquent commentary with which I am in accord. Never have my hopes up too much, but the Hope ,however suppressed, that five Beach Boys would be there together and that my favorite Beach Boy David Marks would be front and center and cheered by the crowd was something I never really expected to happen and it did ,so it's always good to be prepared to be surprised by joy.
I have not done a catalog but what sticks out as the least successful was surfer girl with Lady a. If I may ask what other performances did you consider to be odd or weak in one regard?
I thought that Charlie puth did a tremendously great job with wouldn't it be nice. What did you think of the performance of Surfin USA and fun fun which I thought was pretty good though not necessarily fantastic. Lots of energy, singers were pretty decent.
Some have commented that beck was really singing his heart out and did a good job on Sloop but Good Vibrations was simply Beyond his vocal abilities. Just to reassert I think the top top performances were LeAnn Rimes and anything with John Legend and Brandy carlisle. Norah Jones was lovely on warmth at the Sun though some might dispute the swingy Jazz Vibe she overlaid. The Pentatonix and Mumford and Sons and take six I thought were all great. Michael McDonald sort of forgot or made up lyrics to Don't Worry Baby which I didn't like. But that overall performance was strong. Weezer in California Girls was just okay I guess
The Hansons achieving so little magic with Barbara Ann unfortunately.
St Vincent just fantastic with I just wasn't made....
That's all I can think of from the top of my head.

I do not believe that this has been posted here but it's Michael McDonald and take six rehearsing backstage. Frustrating that he didn't get the lyrics right here or when the cameras were rolling but definitely a wonderful performance.

For the fans who endured the proverbial slings-and-arrows - this is so delicious to see them honored by a jury of their peers. Thanks!

Those of you who are musicians can do a much better job of explaining it but for me there's something distinctly different about the performances in this program from the ones in the Brian Wilson tribute.
Now I think many of those are absolutely great including Billy Joel and Carly Simon with David Crosby and I just love that show I think it's so professionally done and so rich. But something about the performances for the Grammy tribute are different.
I can't put it very well but it's as if the frequency of the beach boy music was shot through a prism and came out with a kind of richness along the spectrum that I hadn't expected. If anyone agrees with the spirit of my comment please find a way to express it better and perhaps in more musically informed terms. I'm appreciating parts of songs and parts of the composition and the lyrics and every aspect of the beach boy music more than I had before in hearing these inventive renditions, perhaps that's another way to put it.

Was this special already shown on TV and I missed it, or are there just YouTube segments appearing, while the TV special has yet to officially air?

Funny, no one thought Joni Mitchell would perform again. For me, that was painful to watch. Nah - it was a joy and a triumph that Joni could look out over a sea of fans who embraced her lifetime of work. And onstage among her peers and those whom she inspired. I think that kind of validation helps people have the courage to carry on in the face of adversity. And singing with Brandi. I felt it was extraordinary.

I'm appreciating parts of songs and parts of the composition and the lyrics and every aspect of the beach boy music more than I had before in hearing these inventive renditions, perhaps that's another way to put it. A lot of the guests at the Brian tribute were big earlier on like the Beach Boys themselves were. Elton John, Paul Simon. Billy Joel..ect. and the bulk of the performers this time were bigger more recently.. last 20 years or less …sort of. There is now a much bigger age gap in the chosen talent and it helps drive home the greatness and timelessness of The Beach Boys music and Career. Maybe that’s part of what you are feeling. Example, Little Big Town are really successful in the country genre (I’m a fan of theirs) but both Dennis and Carl were already gone before anyone had ever heard of them or they had even formed a band. Also, it was honoring the Beach BOYS and when Brian gets his own praise, and he deserves it and then some, it unfortunately often helps perpetuate the myth that the other guys were just lucky and it was all Brian. Help Me Rhonda, California Girls, Good Vibrations are BEACH BOYS songs. Always have been and always will and the performers were honoring that fact.

Paul that is an insightful and well written description and certainly puts into words what I was struggling to express.
I'll bet we could even go on and on about it to cover the unique magic of those many interpretive and creative performances of Beach Boy music, which is indeed itself absolutely Majestic and eternal. GRAZIE

I guess you had to be there. I dislike tributes for the most part and these clips didn’t change my mind. I think the setlist should have been deeper cuts but that wouldn’t satisfy the average viewer. Folks like Timmy Schmit would have been a more preferable choice for me. I will watch basically to see the boys together. Call me jaded

And do you mean to tell me that he botched the lyrics *again*? He did the same exact thing the last time he performed "Don't Worry Baby" years back for a Brian Wilson tribute. Someone get this guy a teleprompter please.

Yes and I don't recall if he botched the same exact lyric but I remember, because I know the lyrics quite well, that he had slurred through a couple of lines or reversed a couple of words or did something wrong. It was just distracting for those who know the song well. Nonetheless, a lot of feeling and a lot of love from Take 6 and also from Michael as well.
