I dunno, aren't the concert audience noises natural? I think I remember the '64 concert notes indicating that they didn't have to turn up the audience noises because it was already loud. And definitely a big YES on the Party! party effects. How could I forget that? You're probably right on the Concert front. However I do seem to remember reading somewhere that one of the tracks was recreated because of a sub par performance. I may be confusing it with Leid in Hawaii though. Perhaps it was that they had to augment some of the Concert tracks because of the issues you mentioned. Going by memory here (I'm open for corrections) there was doctoring in the studio including overdubbed vocals and Brian used the original music tracks for both "Fun, Fun, Fun" (which was sped up) and "I Get Around", (organ removed) making them sound like they were new performances. I think there were girls screams added too.

COMMENT to filledeplage: To my knowledge the BBs have never traveled with an acoustic piano. You would need to have it tuned with each move, which is not practical. What you see Daryl doing at the end (you called it "shake the keyboard") is just using the lid as percussion. You will notice he moves the cover with three beats of the tune to emphasize the break of three beats. Otherwise, it is just a normal 5-octave piano. ~swd

The 1977 early mix of Pitter Patter has rain and thunder sounds to open the track. Also rain at the start of "The Warmth Of the Sun". Don't think I've heard that before, Leila. Where's that?

Also rain at the start of "The Warmth Of the Sun". Don't think I've heard that before, Leila. Where's that? Hi Mikie, Sorry, it was poorly worded. I was referring to rain at the start of the version of "California Dreamin'" that appears on the "Warmth of the Sun" compilation from a few years back.

How about the overdubbed applause in the closing seconds of Dennis's heart-breaking "End Of The Show"? And (in contrast) applause in "Rock'N'Roll To The Rescue". Also applause/crowd noise at the beginning of "Happy Birthday, America".

Anyone mention the monkey on disco hctn? Or the sound of someone dropping something in the studio during Love Surrounds Me? Or the lowering bell on Full Sail? Or the alt version of Sumahama with ocean sounds play throughout…

“Walking in the Sand” opens with seagull sounds. Curious if anyone knows if it’s real seagulls. The original by the Shangri- Las produced by Shadow Morton is some studio trick and not real seagulls even though it sure sounds like seagulls on the beach.

I never knew that about the car wreck sound on 'Dead Man's Curve', Boogie. But I'm not completely surprised. If you listed to Jan & Dean's 'Command Performance' album (and 'Anthology') you'll hear the two of them messing around in the studio, including running/rewinding the tape of the car wreck sound a few times. I'm sure you've heard the 'dirty' version of DMC bootlegged, haven't you? After I heard them messing around with the car wreck sounds, then I realized it was even used in the mix in the released version of Dead Man’s Curve. Somebody posted the following songfacts.com: It’s interesting, but I can’t vouch for its accuracy. “In the 1950s, an audio recording happened to be made duringa car crash. In that crash, someone died. Their scream can be heard at the point of impact. For years, the recording was used as a sound effect. The most famous use was in Jan & Dean's song 'Dead Man's Curve.' The crash audio is cut up and repeated in bits and pieces, in the song, with at least one full repetition that included the scream. The Tennessee Department of (Highway?) Safety ran drunk driving commercials in the 60's that included the crash audio. These were played during the holidays to reduce traffic fatalities due to drunken drivers. I remember that one year there was a public announcement over the local television, that the audio would nol longer be used and the commercials containing the audio would no longer be aired. The reason was that including the death of a person in a commercial was inapproriate and they apologized.” I've been unable to enjoy the car wreck sound effect anymore since it was reported here that it was a recording of a real car crash, and someone died. However, the more I think about it, the more I think that it is just a Hollywood sound effect, and not a particularly realistic one that that - rather than an actual car crash. 1. Why would a sound recording be made of an unintentional car crash? That is a coincidence I find very difficult to believe. 2. The scream is loud and clear enough that the microphone would have had to be inside the car. How did the tape recorder and/or tape recording survive, or even be found, given the amount of damage you are hearing? 3. I've witnessed a couple of car crashes in my life, and they just sound like a quick banging sound, lasting less than one second. They don't go on and on with continually crunching metal, pieces falling off, for 5 to 10 seconds like that recording. What do you think?

Has anyone fact-checked the crash fx story? A quick search of Snopes didn't show anything, but that whole story sure sounds a lot like an urban legend to me.

Late to the party on this, so sorry if these have been mentioned.
Does BW solo count? If so here's two from the Sweet Insanity years...the tea kettle on Water Builds Up and the chicken sounds on Country Feelins (which crack me up. Love the bawk-bawk vocals too!)

Hey Mikie, just came across this. We were actually just discussing this in the "Songs You Love" thread.
There is indeed a 1977 version of Pitter Patter with a thunderstorm opening. It lasts all the way through the first verse in a slow fade, gone by "and until it stops". There are other significant mix differences noted on the other thread.
As far as I know, it is not currently available on YouTube.

Whoops Mikie, just realized y'all were discussing Warmth Of The Sun. My bad... The thunderstorm version of Warmth of the Sun would be a real rarity, even if it did sound a little bright

If BW solo counts, all the stuff in Rio Grande, weird cricket sound or whatever in Night Time, saw in BLYHGL (maybe thats a reach)
Went to that project first since it's my favorite released BW solo album (not counting SMiLE, not sure how to categorize that one... it's almost like a whole separate reclamation project)

Were any of the songs on the 1964 Beach Boys Concert LP actually studio recordings with audience sounds overdubbed, or were they all actually live recordings with some overdubs? If any were studio recordings, then the audience sounds would be a sound effect. I could tell the first time I heard Beach Boys Concert in the early 90's that Fun, Fun, Fun and I Get Around were studio tracks. Kind of bummed me out. I'm sure the guys could do credible versions of both songs on stage in 64.
