OMG, it just hit me...
When I saw the Brian show at the Hollywood Bowl in 2016, M. Ward, aka "Him," opened. The way he talked really annoyed me.
Now it occurs to me where I've heard his voice:

To me, she always sounds like she is bored out of her mind as she sings. I get that some people like this sort of blank emotionless singing, but not me. Nice that they're paying tribute to Brian but... urrghhhh.

How to turn one of THE best pop/rock songs into a lifeless mess. And I'm holding back here.

Ok, we get it many people don’t like this duo. How is continuing to go on about it any different than people questioning problems with copyright releases and such? Just asking. The thread I created last night seems to have been taken down and that’s ok as it’s probably best. But when some people that have been members here are feeling upset that a certain poster got angry and left over less flack than She and Him are getting to me is puzzling.

My vinyl copy arrived today. Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but it's a very nice looking package. I'm a bit apprehensive, though, because Gary Usher is listed as "Terry Usher." From the videos that have been uploaded, the tally is: didn't like one, liked another, didn't hate another, loved another...so this'll be an interesting dive. Full disclosure: two reasons I bought this -- 1) the Mrs. and I like She & Him but didn't have anything officially from them (kept meaning to get their Christmas album, though, but the Mrs. wasn't too jazzed about this album), and 2) I'm a slut for colored vinyl -- you dangle a carrot in front of me, there's a good chance I'll take a bite.

Just listened. It's kind of a mixed bag. Many of you have already made up your mind on the entire thing based on a few tracks, and a few of you, well, I'm so sorry Zooey Deschanel drove her car over your dog...basically: some of the tracks are good, some suck, some are meh, and others are just plain fun.
Overall, the background vocals (almost exclusively Zooey) are very lush and highly enjoyable. Unfortunately, for about half the album, all of Zooey's vocals -- lead and background -- sound out of sync...as if they were recorded separately but someone accidentally deleted half a second of space before they start. And some of her high notes on her leads are just...blah, like...nothing exciting; she's a much better mid-range singer. For the most part, when M. Ward takes a lead vocal, he's incredibly boring and very ineffective.
Track-by-track:
"Darlin'" - M. Ward's vocal is VERY boring, while Zooey's turn at lead is okay but just...nothing exciting. For at least the first half of the song, the backing track sounds like "I'd Love Just Once to See You," and I mean that in a good way. I'd like this track much more if it weren't for M. Ward's uninspired vocal. Final rating: meh
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" -- backing track sounds kind of like an amalgam of "I'm Broke" (but not as obnoxious) and one of Brian's early '60s outside productions. Again, background vocals are lush and way cool. There's an audience applause at the end but no indication in the liners that this is anything but a studio production, so probably just there for effect. Final rating: good
"'Til I Die" -- very nice acoustic guitar intro. Vocals are good, but just don't have the emotion of The Beach Boys. To be fair, I don't think it's possible to replicate that emotion. Interesting instrumental arrangement that would work better if this were not "'Til I Die". The "Pipeline" vocal is replaced with an extended trumpet solo that riffs off that part. Not the worst version of "'Til I Die" (The Wilsons, I'm looking in your direction!) but The Beach Boys' version just ruins every other possible version, except maybe Brian doing it in concert. Final rating: meh
"Deirdre" -- brought a smile to my face right away! Bouncy arrangement, a bit faster than The Beach Boys' version. Backing track is a lot less imposing -- just drums, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, and a quiet bass. M. Ward's brief vocals are actually pretty effective and reminiscent of some of the occasional vocals you'd hear on a Tijuana Brass album. Final rating: just plain fun
"Melt Away" -- very pleasant acoustic guitar intro. Mellow backing track with a bit of punch on the snare. A bit of that 1965 Brian Wilson-style staccato reverbed electric guitar going on. Very mellow backing track. Backing vocal arrangement stays fairly close to that of the '88 version. Interesting string ending. Final rating: good
"Good To My Baby" -- totally different arrangement, much more up-tempo, very hard to recognize at first. It's over a bit too early because of the speed change. Nice, but I'll stick with the Today! version. Final rating: meh
"Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" -- acoustic guitar backing with a slide guitar in the background. Sounds like there's a brief appearance of the "workshop" session. A bit more up-tempo but very enjoyable. Never noticed before how similar "Melt Away" is to this song. M. Ward's backing vocals are pretty nice on this. My favorite track on the album. Final rating: good
"Don't Worry Baby" -- Again, with a boring M. Ward lead vocal. Kind of a messy arrangement. Better off with Keith Moon's version. Final rating: suck
"This Whole World" -- Good backing vocals, interesting arrangement, but it makes me miss the Sunflower version. Very unnecessary repetitions of "I'm thinkin' 'bout this whole world." Final rating: meh
"Kiss Me Baby" -- wow, an effective M. Ward lead vocal! Very pleasant listen. Very laid back backing track. Lush backing vocals, missing the "kiss a little bit 'n' fight a little bit 'n' kiss a little bit" part, but does have the "whoa, baby" part. I really wish that Zooey's lead vocals weren't double-tracked; they'd sound better single-tracked. Final rating: good
"Do It Again" -- Lead vocal on the verses by Brian himself, but it's way too low -- he sounds like he's struggling to hit those low notes! (For comparison's sake: the usual key is E-flat, but this one is in G below that E-flat.) This arrangement actually sounds kind of...sinister...which is a shame because Zooey does a lovely job singing the bridge. Seriously, this song version sounds like you're entering a dark cave. Final rating: suck
"Heads You Win - Tails I Lose" -- the beginning made me laugh! Sounds pseudo modern-disco. Main body is more conventional, almost surfy. No lead vocals. Just backing vocals and what sounds like a talkbox chorus (think Wondermints' version of "Barbarella"), with a very bizarre bridge that sounds like it's being sung through one of those voice boxes they give to throat cancer victims. Seriously, this is one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time! At the very end, the "Barbarella" chorus comes back to sing the "every time we pick a fight" intro. Final rating: just plain fun
"Please Let Me Wonder" -- very lovely arrangement -- if it weren't "Please Let Me Wonder." Seriously, take the "Please Let Me Wonder" melody and lyrics out and I would LOVE to hear what this song actually could have been -- it really is a good arrangement, just not for this song. Final rating: meh
"Meant For You" -- Running time is a minute and a half, but unfortunately, it's doesn't use the "puppy dog" lyrics. Zooey and M. take turns singing the verse. Hate to say it, but I much prefer M.'s vocal here. Backing vocals are nice. Final rating: this one was hard. Let's just say backing track good, Zooey's vocal meh, M.'s vocal good.
Would I recommend this? Depends. If you're a big She & Him fan and a Brianista, you'll probably like this -- well, unless you expect ukulele, because there's no uke for this -- which is unheard of for She & Him. If you've never heard She & Him, well...I dunno. At least stream the "good" and "just plain fun" tracks. If you've already made up your mind, even the good and fun tracks won't change your mind. I think "good" isn't strong enough for a few of the "goods" because some of the "goods" are actually very, very good. The "sucks" are really, really bad though.
Personally, I think this would make a better E.P. that would include "Wouldn't It Be Nice" to appeal to the more casual listeners, "Heads You Win - Tails I Lose" to give the die-hards a giggle, "Don't Talk" because it's just plain beautiful, and "Melt Away" because it's the title track (and well done).

Very informative review, Dauber. I like some She & Him songs, but from what I've heard of the tribute, it's not really my thing. No disrespect; it's a labour of love from them to Brian and it will put some deep cuts out there to an unfamiliar audience. I guess I don't feel that energy that's behind a lot of Brian's music. For instance, I would have to liked hear a more fast paced version of Melt Away. Maybe I'm bias to the cover done by The Pen Friend Club, but I feel that version has an energy driving it, similar to a lot of Brian's music. Things like this are harmless in the end, but not feeling it at the moment.

I'm excited to hear their cover of Melt Away. I really love that song, but there's not a definitive version of it for me.
Bummer about the background vocals being offbeat. I noticed that in Don't Worry Baby.

I'm interested enough to give it a listen. I really only know M. Ward from his appearance at a Norah Jones concert. I guess he's got something the girls like, but he made no impression on me. Zooey, of course, is incredibly cute, and sometimes that's enough.

Listened tonight, and your review was pretty spot-on. Deirdre and Melt Away were the standouts for me. I liked the tweaks they made to the chorus to Deirdre especially. It takes out some of the schmaltz.

I’m glad you said the thing about the timing of Zooey’s vocals. On Til I Die it’s really noticeable and i thought maybe just an issue with her timing.

Feelings towards this one may depend on how much tolerance people have for Zooey's voice.

These arrangements sound like they would be more at home on a soundtrack to a quirky Wes Anderson (𝑅𝑢𝑠ℎ𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑅𝑜𝑦𝑎𝑙 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑏𝑎𝑢𝑚𝑠) or Alexander Payne (𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛) film. 🤷♂️ I'm not terribly sure I'm digging this.

No indication in the liner notes (or elsewhere) as to when Brian recorded hos vocal, I guess?

If only it did sound good enough to make it to a Wes Anderson film... Having said that, the Big Guy sounds rather good on this.
