On the surface, it seems things are not going well for She & Him.

Well, it’s better than Darlin’, though it is still not very good.

Okay gang! Here we go for round 2 on 'She and Him'. Let's pick the eyes out of this baby. 'Wouldn't It Be Nice'. At the moment, I'll bite my tongue and let others speak first.
Does the intro sound like The Wanderer from the first live album? I can’t get upset about these covers, since it is a back door open to new fans finding and mining on their own for the BB/BW catalog. Who thought the whole Locash thing would lead to a date at the Opry? You never know where a back door opening will lead you. One of my former professors always said the, “back door IS the front door.”

These tribute albums never work

These tribute albums never work Well, they laughed at Stars and Stripes. That was a sort of country star tribute to the BBs. No one is laughing this week. Their fans (She and Him) (maybe not BB/BW fans) may buy it and Zooey is in the film business, so some of that could very well end up on a film soundtrack.

I really dig that "Wouldn't It Be Nice." Lotsa lush harmonies, and not a note-for-note remake. Starts off sounding like "I'm Broke" or maybe something from one of Brian's more recent albums. Way better than their version of "Darlin'."

Darlin' didn't do anything for me but I think this version of WIBN is very decent. The objectionable thing on the YouTube page is
Song Lyrics: (by Brian Wilson, Michael Love, Tony Asher)
All credited lyricists listed in first name alphabetical order - is that how they do it?
Edit: remembered that Brian and Tony originally had 25% each for the lyrics, then Mike got his share later of course, so they've now all got an equal share percentage-wise is that right? Still, it boggles the mind that Tony's name could appear last and people think he contributed the least.

Yeah it's a whole nail thing with Darlin is a big mess for me and they wouldn't it be nice is pleasant and Charming enough and I put it on and I didn't jump up to turn it off. If it makes Brian happy and if it helps bring attention to the Beach Boys and creates good energy for everyone involved then I'm supportive as if anyone we're waiting for my support...

Not thrilled with WIBN either. For some reason they are missing the mark. Below is one of my favorite covers She and Him have done and I think the video really suits the music….. kind of haunting and very much a 60’s vibes. Proves SHE can sing and HE is a good musician…although as has been discussed peoples taste varies. Not sure why this Brian album seems to be off. I actually like them a lot but I don’t know about this Wilson record. Maybe they are/were trying too hard..? Or not enough..? At least some of the tracks have got to stand out.

Surprisingly I heard a track from this album last week at a Starbucks in Manila of all places. I don't recall which one, but the dude sang it and even over the faint PA I was thinking, "um, these vocals don't sound great."
Interested to see that apparently that wasn't an unfair assessment.

This darlin version is very poor... this guy has no voice, and the backings are horrible!

It doesn't excite me at all.
Still, I love seeing the reach of The Beach Boys in the different factions and music genres. So far in 2022, Bruce and Christian Love recorded with The Weeknd, Mike & Bruce with Locash, and now this. I should also mention The Seven Symphonies: A Classical Tribute To Brian Wilson – recorded by Alexandra Arrieche and the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra.
It's hard to say if She & Him fans will like this. I hope so. Because Brian's and The Beach Boys' catalog is so massive and impressive. Not all of it, but most.

I like them a lot, and yes, Zooey's voice is just fine on most of their recordings. Someone upthread mentioned this in the studio recording performance with Brian from 2015, and I still feel it's terrific. And Brian is having a good time doing it with them.

All She & Him do is take classic Beach Boys songs and make them sound like they ought to be soundtracking a John Lewis advert. This isn't a good thing.

Let's try another track, there's got to be a winner somewhere on this album... (hides under chair)
Til' I Die.

Okay, I was expecting to hate it. Because I have NOT had good experiences with any "'Til I Die" that's not the Beach Boys' studio recording. Didn't care for Brian's 1995 solo version. I DESPISE the version on The Wilsons. But I don't hate the She & Him version. Still don't like it, but I think I don't-like it the least of the non-Beach Boys ones...I'd don't-like it even less if it didn't seem rushed.

It's the least awful of the covers thus far "released"... but it's still awful.
