First of all, I apologize for the intrusion and for disrupting the argument going on in this thread. I hope you are all doing well and enjoying your day. I have read through the discussion about the Dolby Atmos mixes, and I came across a statement that suggested only the Dennis tracks were mixed into Atmos because of the way they were originally recorded. However, I am curious to know if this is based on speculation or if there is a reliable source to confirm this. I am interested in learning more about this topic and would appreciate any insights that members of this community can provide. I am not taking sides or looking to start an argument. I simply want to learn more, and I am confident that this community can provide valuable information. There is nothing unique technically about the recording of those tracks that predisposes them to surround mixes more than others. Stylistically, because of the orchestration, it may be that they were singled out as a good fit for the format. right, and it’s disappointing they didn’t think about that for a track like steamboat, with its quirky little sound effects and layers, it would work just as well in surround.

For clarity, my only beef is with the price. Yesterday, you inspired me to go on ebay and see what was there. A lot of UK box sets and the 2-LP/CD (selling to US) with price and shipping coming to about $150 for the box. Then a bunch of US stock, for around $150 and lower shipping, so they play with the shipping cost to come out to the same. I tagged one for $150 as a "watch" and overnight I got an offer for $130 as this discussion continued. I only want to pay $100, max, since I paid for the download just for the photos. And, I paid $80 for MIC on ebay, because I waited and haggled a bit. They want to move their inventory. So you might get a better deal on ebay if you put a few on "watch" and make a counter offer for a price you can live with and the shipping would be lower on your side of the "pond." Happy bargaining! 🙏🏻🎶

I’m “watching” several sets on eBay U.K. but, so far, no one’s offered me an offer! Kiwis must think themselves lucky – I could buy a CD deluxe set from NZ for only slightly more than Amazon UK are selling, with free shipping halfway round the world. And I did manage to find an online U.K. seller several weeks ago who’d knocked their price down to under a tenner, but they cancelled my order the following morning when they realised their error. Legally I think they might have been obliged to honour it, but it was such an obvious gaffe that I fully expected the cancellation anyway. In anticipation of the saving I’ll make by holding out, I’ve just bought myself a bottle of Glen Marnoch Islay malt whisky (though those who know the brand will know I haven’t really indulged very much at all!).

Desper isn’t even listed as the for sure engineer of those two tracks. Cuddle Up: RECORDED: Sunday April 9, 1972, 10:00am-1:00pm – Brian Wilson’s house / Engineer: Steve Desper or Steve Moffitt(?) Monday April 10, 1972, 10:00am-1:30pm – Sound City Sepulveda (bass, timpani, strings) / Engineer: unknown Circa mid April, 1972 – Brian Wilson’s house (vocals) / Engineer: Steve Desper or Steve Moffitt(?) Make It Good: RECORDED: (Intro section and basic piano track possibly recorded circa spring to summer 1971, for Dennis & Daryl’s album project.) Sunday April 9, 1972, 10:00am-1:00pm – Brian Wilson’s house / Engineer: Steve Desper or Steve Moffitt(?) Monday April 10, 1972, 10:00am-1:30pm – Sound City Studios, Sepulveda (bass, timpani, strings) / Engineer: unknown Circa mid April, 1972 – Brian Wilson’s house (vocals) / Engineer: Steve Desper or Steve Moffitt(?) Tuesday April 18, 1972, 10:00am-12:00pm – Sunset Sound Studio B (horns) / Contractor: Diane Rovell / Engineer: unknown Also, if we’re going by that theory, “Marcella”, “here she comes” and “hold on dear brother” should’ve also gotten true Atmos mixes, as those were (at least partially) engineered by one Stephen W Desper. All of the engineering credits are listed here: thebeachboys.com/sail-on-sailor-sessionography/I see absolutely no correlation between original engineer and if it got an actual surround mix or not.

It is my impression that Stephen Desper was not consulted for any of the recent archival releases. If that is the case, even if he engineered the original Dennis tracks in a way that arguably lend themselves more to Atmos treatment, how would he know about any reasoning behind decisions taken by Mark, Alan and Howie with respect to utilizing Atmos on recent releases?
Incidentally, I had a little read of some interviews with Giles Martin about his work on Beatles atmos mixes. Interesting in particular how he approached the Atmos treatment of Because.
And on that note, what is the status of Martin's Pet Sounds Atmos mix?

#Justice you said most of the Atmos mixes are just the stereo mixes stretched out and put through some sort of Atmos filter. Is it fair to say that you are suggesting that these mixes are to Dolby Atmos what the duophonic releases were to stereo?

Is it fair to say that you are suggesting that these mixes are to Dolby Atmos what the duophonic releases were to stereo? that’s exactly what I’m suggesting, and I’m not the only one. www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/threads/dolby-atmos-upmixing-on-the-streaming-services-unacceptable.32866/It’s quite annoying, and it’s quite sad that it’s happening to The Beach Boys. But also, they are very much not alone, the big rush to upgrade albums to be Atmos compatible has meant that plenty have been fakes that are just a stereo mix stretched out. It pretty much always sounds bad and breaking apart and isolating The individual channels is literally embarrassing. It’s just nonsense. I don’t even think surround music is that important, I just think it’s such a blatant rip off in a long list of rip offs.

Speaking of an (not really, not yet) enabling (Amazon UK) price: Deluxe CD Box: “Sail On Sailor 1972 has decreased from £97.92 to £97.32” Deluxe vinyl box: “Sail On Sailor 1972 has decreased from £129.50 to £129.43” 2CD: “Sail On Sailor 1972 has decreased from £16.98 to £16.87” Edited to add: 2LP & 7” vinyl down a whole penny! “Sail On Sailor 1972 has decreased from £43.90 to £43.89”

€69,99 is a pretty good price. How about we all chip in and send John the money so he can buy that darn box set? I’ll gladly contribute €10.

Not bothered about the vinyl set anyway, but good price for those that are, especially if you're in NL.

Man, that’s a good price. 61 % off! I can vouch for iMusic in case anyone’s thinking of ordering. I’ve ordered a lot of stuff from them throughout the years. Their packaging is excellent. They use real sturdy record mailers (the expensive kind with edge protection) and lots of bubble wrapping.

Worth noting:
“For orders outside the EU Local customs taxes and custom clearence fees may apply and be charged from the shipping company upon arrival. Such taxes and fees must be paid by the customer. Local taxes and fees are NOT included in the price shown in our order basket. iMusic has no information on local customs tax amounts to be paid upon arrival.”

www.hhv.de also has the two vinyl sets at decent prices now: 2LP & 7” is €23.99. 5LP & 7” is €69.99. (Probably attract taxes/customs duties/courier handling fees etc if imported to our sovereign nation.)
