I'll credit Andrew with believing that he does have something interesting to say and wish he would just say it because really that is what we are all here for.

as far as I can tell, I’m like literally the only person here who gives the slightest rats ass about atmos mixes… Also, please don’t take this the wrong way, but the more in more you speak the more you sound like an unhinged Facebook conspiracy theorist. “Stop parroting bro, learn the facts and stop being a sheep.” But instead of “stop the steal” it’s “stop the Atmos mixes”. Also, you claim to be a historian… But Why does a historian have such a drastic interest in making sure nobody learns the history of the very subject he's an "expert" on? It’s baffling, if it’s part of the history, you’re the historian, you’re the one that supposed to inform us of stuff like this. So… What’s the history? And if it’s something secret that you can’t say… Why even bring it up in the first place? We could’ve avoided this entire conversation. You might find out the history of the term "conspiracy theorist" to learn why it is so offensive to those BB contemporaries, who watched their president, JFK being assassinated. It is a pejorative term coined by the CIA as against those who did not believe the "magic bullet" theory that there was a lone gunman because even RFK Jr. - now a presidential candidate has declared that it was an inside job. So those who found the narrative insulting to the collective intelligence were smeared by the term "conspiracy theorist" - there is no good reason to say that an historian of this music is "unhinged." Knowing the context, I would never use that term. RFK Jr. is the one whose unhinged! An anti-vaxer who believes his uncle JFK's assassination was an inside job and believes his Dad's killer is innocent and goes to visit with him for 3 hours in prison (while his wife sat out in the car). Unfortunately, there's a black sheep in the Kennedy family, who is our American royalty. Sorry to side-track but I couldn't help myself. I blame it on you for bringing it up, Fille.

While we wait for that explanation… I should say that the two actual Atmos mixes they created sound absolutely fantastic in my opinion, pretty much better than everything else. Which makes it even more baffling why they didn’t finish what they started…
This is just a crappy stereo fold and it still sounds great. Shame Steamboat or Funky Pretty couldn’t get this treatment…

I don't know exactly what AGD is referring to, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the two Dennis songs on Carl and the Passions originally being recorded for Dennis' solo album, which was a project he was working on with Steve Desper, who as we know was particularly interested in surround-sound recording technologies and who also stopped working for the Beach Boys before Carl and the Passions was completed. I'm assuming that AGD is implying that that means those tracks were recorded differently in ways that make them more susceptible to surround-sound release (perhaps for example each instrument or vocal part was recorded with multiple mics rather than a single one, allowing them to be spread better across the spectrum).

Yes, that's exactly what AGD is referring to - "Cuddle Up" & "Make It Good" - that Dennis recorded with Daryl Dragon for the solo album. Desper was recording in QUAD at the time during his tenure in the early 70's. The Flame album is regarded as the first Quad album, which obviously predated Dolby Surround.

As far as I can tell, there’s literally nothing special about those two tracks other than… Maybe they didn’t translate well through the upmixer so an actual full new atmos mix was the only option? This is literally the only explanation I could think of that sorta makes sense, and it doesn’t make sense when tracks like “sail on sailor” and “Long Promised Road”which have already been mixed into surround decades ago Also couldn’t get the Atmos treatment. But also, these Atmos mixes are streaming only so… They can update them at any time. They can improve them. Will they though? Probably not. And it sucks so much because if they actually cared they could do this so well and they just… Won’t. Fleetwood Mac have done it very well, the Beatles have done it very well, why can’t the beach boys do it very well! All those glorious harmonies in surround… But nope, fake upmixing it is.

Is it because Daryl Dragon helped write and arrange them? Well, none of the other tracks he helped write and arrange had this… Oh, I'm lovin' this. No, none of those. You're coming at this from pretty much every angle bar the right one. So either that answer is not correct and he’s going to come forward with something great, or it is correct and he was just lying. or, as I believe, he knows just as much as everyone else does, nothing. So Mikie - I can tell you why I have this position with 2 hats. This will be controversial. First, I taught in the 70s. We almost never saw autism; and this was before regular early intervention for kids who needed services. The teachers (me) registered kids for kindergarten when they only got 8 shots, total. It spiked up in the 90s when the vax schedule was ramped up. But instead of being able to sue the companies directly, and having a public paper trail, they set up this "vaccine court" to get compensated if a kid was injured as a result and those settlements are closed. And, over 90% of the injuries, are not reported under the VAERS (injury reporting) system. Now there are about 80 shots and now every school district has "autism spectrum" clusters. Don't take my word for it. Please. Ask some teachers from back then, if they observed a change. Some colleagues do work in special needs at the administrative level, who started out decades ago in the classroom like me, and are horrified at how many spectrum classes have to be set up. And, RFK Jr. - in his law practice, (Morgan and Morgan) did what is called toxic torts litigation, and took vaccine injury cases. Something very unpopular and mostly secretive. I know what I saw, as do many teachers who watched this happen. We went from almost zero kids, to one in 30. He is not anti-vax. That is false. He is "prudent vax" for basic, necessary vaxxes and not ones thrown in for profit. So RFK Jr. knows what goes on behind the scenes in the government with these huge drug contracts and concealed adverse effects from his trials. His book has many cases listed. No one is suing him because they will lose. He knows those drug company heads end up running the agencies, they are supposed to regulate. And he knows what goes on at the highest levels of govt. Do you think there is a reason, after 60 years, the JFK documents have not been released? If I had not followed these trends and seen them, I might think he was a crackpot as well but read some of the cases. I cannot deny what I and others saw and experienced. Somewhere (maybe on rumble?) there is an interesting interview between RFK JR and Eric Clapton that you might enjoy. These are my personal observations, but trying to have an open mind, after listening to RFK JRs positions and reading his stuff. Kinda like being a BB fan bucking the tide in the late 60s and early 70s! (Today is the anniversary of my first BB concert!) No, I'm not telling you the year! 😂 As always, Mikie, JMHO ❤️

Don't take my word for it. Please. Ask some teachers from back then, if they observed a change. The change in supposed prevalence of autism is entirely down to the change in diagnostic criteria. I've been autistic all my life, but was only diagnosed as such just before my forty-first birthday because when I was at school it wasn't called being autistic, it was called being a weird kid, a picky eater who has no friends and gets upset by things that don't bother other kids, and who gets picked on by all the bullies. I can guarantee there were quite a few of *those* where you were teaching. Spend any time at all around neurodivergent adults and you'll see the same story -- people in their forties and fifties who have felt out of place all their lives finally getting diagnosed in the last few years because their children and grandchildren have been diagnosed with autism or ADHD and it's made them recognise those same traits in themselves. I personally know at least twenty people in early middle age who have been diagnosed as autistic in the last five years -- with a diagnostic procedure that involves asking about their childhood. Also autism isn't an injury.

I personally know at least twenty people in early middle age who have been diagnosed as autistic in the last five years -- with a diagnostic procedure that involves asking about their childhood. Also autism isn't an injury. Thank you for that reply. There is a definite line of demarcation in terms of time, (for me) and I maintain that along with other colleagues, more like an "event." Moving the industry of education is glacial, and getting kids services they need. There have been changes in classification but driven by a lot of factors. I don't happen to feel it is necessarily a disability, and that a lot of spectrum kids are actually brighter, than the middle of the bell curve. One challenge is tapping into that gifted place and navigating the social issues. The trick is getting the generally inflexible school setting to accommodate every kid. There is a now a class action evolving in the US, pointing to Tylenol (acetaminophen in the US) (paracetamol in other countries) taken during pregnancy as a cause of spectrum issues. RFK Jr. has an international foundation called The Childrens' Health Defense (there is a European group) and I saw a link to that litigation area. I'm not entirely convinced, with the time line, for the bulk of cases, because as a product, coming out in the early 70s, it is still well before we saw this spike. His site is a wealth of information about a lot of different topics, and there are about 17k docs globally who are supporting some of the foundation's work, cases and activism. I am impressed because he has a serious voice condition called spasmodic dysphonia which makes it difficult for him to speak and he is twice the age of his father when he became a candidate. That is a challenge for public speaking and media. In the States ADD/ADHD is kind of a catch-all and the diagnosis starts with teachers filling out a type of checklist, if it is a school-based evaluation. It also can take place in the medical context, taking a different route. Your BB work has been pretty brilliant and appreciated. I was a late bloomer to the BBB sphere. It bothers me (a lot) with my teacher hat, to learn that you experienced bullying. I hate hearing that, especially in the school setting, because learning is supposed to be a great daily adventure that everyone enjoys. I actually enjoyed the kids who were sometimes distracted or looking out the window because I wondered what great things they were thinking about knowing many would do great things thinking outside-the-box. Mostly they are very intuitive and make sense thinking ahead of the group. And making sure they had sufficient exercise if ADD/ADHD so they could come back from outdoor recess, able to join the class to cover the work. Exercise is a really helpful tool in school. We need to do a better job as a profession, to be aware that some things bother certain children and get ahead of that so kids aren't picked on whether it is sound, textures or interruptions to a daily routine. "Smart" has many faces and I truly believe that. But I think the jury is out, with whatever single or combination causes, with all the chemicals in food, and other products we use and environmental issues. Again, thank you for your post and your BB work!

If the Christmas album (recorded on three tracks), Pet Sounds (recorded on eight tracks) and “Sail On Sailor” (recorded on 16 tracks) can all get surround mixes, then those two albums (16 track)can be mixed in Atmos. Again, the title track has literally been mixed in Dolby 5.1 decades ago, it’s possible. They just didn’t because… They didn’t. They had their own stupid reasons why and they didn’t, but this explanation inked it.

If the Beatles archival team can make competent Atmos mixes from 8 track recordings than the Beach Boys team can make them from 16 track recordings.
I don't think many people here have actually split up the Atmos channels. It's not pretty. And it has nothing to do with the certain way they were recorded, it has to do with: a) not understanding the technology b) a lack of time/budget c) a lack of care
The Sounds of Summer Atmos mixes were similarly baffling. Even the few that *were* properly mixed and not just the stereo recordings fed into an algorithm sounded terrible.

You're just a black hole of negativity with nothing good to say about anything. I strongly suspect you don't even like yourself. My whole point, which you've spectacularly and repeatedly failed to grasp all along isn't why the rest of the set didn't have Atmos mixes - which I could also care less about - but why those two did.

First of all, I apologize for the intrusion and for disrupting the argument going on in this thread. I hope you are all doing well and enjoying your day.
I have read through the discussion about the Dolby Atmos mixes, and I came across a statement that suggested only the Dennis tracks were mixed into Atmos because of the way they were originally recorded. However, I am curious to know if this is based on speculation or if there is a reliable source to confirm this.
I am interested in learning more about this topic and would appreciate any insights that members of this community can provide. I am not taking sides or looking to start an argument. I simply want to learn more, and I am confident that this community can provide valuable information.

I simply want to learn more, and I am confident that this community can provide valuable information. stereo music is mixed in two channels, obviously. Atmos music is most commonly mixed in 7.1.4. Anything that can be mixed to two channel stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 can also be mixed into Atmos, it doesn’t matter how it was recorded. Mono recordings can be mixed into Atmos, and have. It’s not the best result, but it’s possible. CATP and Holland were recorded on 16 track, and as far as I know, every tape from the sessions is still around. Several tracks have already gotten stereo remixes and stereo alternate mixes, and in the case of the title track, it was mixed into Dolby 5.1 back in 2000 for the endless harmony DVD. Additionally, every track between the last several sets that’s gotten a “Track & Backing vocals” mix has gotten a remix. They literally had to re-mix it, then mute the lead vocal to get the final result. So as far as I know, there is literally nothing that’s technically stopping them from making true Atmos mixes of both full albums… other than themselves. As for why those two particular tracks received true dedicated Atmos mixes, and nothing else did… I have no idea. That’s where I’m totally stumped.

There is nothing unique technically about the recording of those tracks that predisposes them to surround mixes more than others. Stylistically, because of the orchestration, it may be that they were singled out as a good fit for the format. When investigating for the sessionography, we couldn't actually find any direct evidence that Dennis' two So Tough tracks were recorded for something earlier than that project. It's possible that the Make It Good intro section and basic piano track were cut in '71 - they certainly sound like Desper era recordings on Brian's Chickering piano, which was otherwise not being used in the home studio by the next year. But the vocals, strings and horns were definitely recorded in April '72, and Cuddle Up was in all likelihood an entirely new recording for the album.
