What"holiday weekend"? The Wilsons & friends returned from Mexico on November 11th, a Saturday. November 11 is Veterans Day, and when holidays in the U.S. occur on a weekend, they are usually celebrated on the Friday before or Monday afterwards, making it a three day weekend. Or at least they are now. Not every business gets a holiday for Veterans Day, but Murry Wilson ran his own company, so he could do whatever he wanted. (Tomorrow is Nov 11, but Veterans Day is celebrated today).

In this context, "holiday weekend" has always referred to the now-apochryphal Labor Day weekend trip.
In any case, they were back on Wednesday 8th November, so the Veterans Day connection doesn't hold up. Apologies for my screwing up the dates.

This thread has popped my bubble. I always thought that the official story was The Beach Boys wrote a song about surfing, used the food money to rent instruments while their parents were on a vacation in Mexico, and upon returning Murry was at first angry, then astonished at how good they sounded - so he got them a record contract.

A little addition: Frank Berry, son of Tom & Nellie, passed away on October 6th last year at the age of 96. This was part of his online obituary:
"Trade got tougher and they looked to exporting. They targeted the US and Dad made many visits there. Around 1960 he appointed a new agent in California.
This company, Able Machine Tools, was run by a sole trader, one Murray Wilson, who lived in LA with his wife Audrey and their three teenage sons. Murray, in three years, sold over 70 Binns & Berry lathes in California alone and was easily our best distributor worldwide.
However, he is probably better known as the father of Brian, Denis & Carl Wilson who formed the Beach Boys.
Dad once gave the boys $10 to go to Disney World so that he could take Murray and Audrey out for a meal — the only person who paid the Beach Boys to go away!!"

Very interesting thread, which I just now read. Great job finding that obit, Andrew! I wonder if any of the other Berry's are alive? I'm not as astute with the minutiae as you fellows are. I've read David Marks book, but haven't read Becoming The Beach Boys, yet. The biggest thing that confounds me in this thread is why did Brian and Mike sign a songwriting contract on Sept. 15? What had they written before this date that made them do this? And where do ALL the Hite Morgan sessions fit in this? What songs were written before "Surfin'?" If the answer to this lies in a book or a website, please lead me to it. I'm guessing AGD's Bellagio site might have it? I should check there, shouldn't I? Love and merci, Dan Lega
