Here is a Carl interview recorded on KISW Seattle on the early-early morning of Dec 17 1977. The second part is also available on youtube. Carl comes in at about 1:50. Note that Carl is ever the diplomat-although this was probably the nadir of his time as a BB in terms of group harmony-he downplays the famous tarmac fight and makes it sound like he had a blast at MIU (when he apparently only showed up there for two days before bailing).

First time post from a long time lurker (intro posted).
Last week I came across what I think is a 'new to us' Pro Shot concert from 1988. The link from Youtube below leads to a complete recording of a show at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Jan. 12, 1988. There's nothing 'rare' performed, but the video is pretty good, as is the audio. Lots of good closeups, and they all seemed to be in good spirits.
I hope everyone enjoys watching!
Setlist
1 - California Girls
2 - Darlin'
3 - Dance, Dance, Dance
4 - Wouldn't It Be Nice
5 - Do It Again
6 - Don't Worry Baby
7 - God Only Knows

9 - Okie From Muskogee (Merle Haggard cover - snippet)
10 - Little Deuce Scoop / Little Old Lady (From Pasadena) / 409 / Little GTO / I Get Around

'MISIRLOU'!! Carl breaking out on Lead, but what??? I was hanging on for dear life saying 'YES', and before I knew it, he stopped. Dang! I've always been disappointed Carl never did an instrumental guitar piece in all the years of the band's performing. This was a tease...

Yeah-it's a shame Carl didn't let loose more often-I've mentioned many times the quote Ron Altbach gave me-to paraphrase he basically said that Carl wanted to really rock out but in the Beach Boys you have a part to play...meaning you don't improvise.....personally I don't see why it had to be so rigid....he could have done a one minute guitar solo on I Get Around even if it wasn't on the original record and I don't think any real fans would have minded! But it seems like Carl really wanted to recreate the record-as a tribute to Brian and never dreamed of really altering the old tunes...the closest they got to that was letting Dennis sing Help Me Rhonda instead of Al J, and small things like that. When Blondie was in the group, he provided a bit of that improvisational guitar though.

The one time he did rock out (or at least had the room to extemporize at length) was on "Feel Flows" -- that instrumental workout with Charles Lloyd is absolute magic.

Perhaps if less time was wasted talking onstage we'd hear more of Carl's live lead guitar work

Perhaps if less time was wasted talking onstage we'd hear more of Carl's live lead guitar work A lot of the need for banter was the result of broken guitar strings which were self-repaired by the band. This was prior to the luxury of expert guitar techs at-the-ready.

Surely not in 1988 The multigenerational Kokomo era. Late 80s and 90s. On the heels of Still Cruisin' loaded with BB tunes in film. Wipe Out with The Fat Boys. Not much of a time for the jammin' of the 60s and 70s of the college kids. Would it have worked then? Something to think about...🤷♀️ Thanks.

Setlist: Lemme just insert "Shut Down" into the list of car songs here:
#10 - Little Deuce Scoop / Little Old Lady (From Pasadena) / Shut Down / 409 / Little GTO / I Get Around
I wonder why Carl was making faces at 35:20. It wasn't the notorious Carl Wilson "stink-eye" but maybe he or somebody muffed a chord or something.
I remember this '88 tour. Didn't Mike have a schtick for Little Old Lady From Pasadena? He had a shawl on and at the beginning of the song he'd bend way over, then slowly get back up (with help) and the sound of a cranking ratcheting machine. Then he'd pick up the mic stand, turn it upside down, and use it as a steering wheel during the song?

Hey Mikie
You're right about Mike using the shawl during this period. He was doing that as late as 1993 as shown in the car medley clip below:
The ratcheting sound was part of Be True to Your School, as shown in the clip below around the 35 minute mark. Little Old Lady was not part of this show,

Ah, so it was "Be True To Your School" where Mike needed help getting up and the sound of bones cracking! And the cane on 'Pasadena'. Ha Ha! And lookit the first video with a pony-tailed Al and a young Matt Jardine with long hair doing the high parts to 'Little GTO'. Thanks, Chuck.

It was probably one of the coolest techniques they ever used. And kind of unique, unless someone can point to another band who did the same. It made perfect sense, if time-was-of-the-essence.

"Okie from Muskogee" - how soon we all forget. And I wasn't surprised he didn't know of "Wipe Out". Never understood why they did that in the first place, other than somebody thought that would be a hit again. To me, "timed out" would be a better description.

Thanks, Will
I didn't catch the missing setlist items when I copied it from youtube. As for 'Wipeout', I think the logic (such as it was) behind that had something to do with the success of the RunDMC and Aerosmith collaboration on the 'Walk this Way' remake. In hindsight, it probably wasn't a good idea in the long run!
When Wipeout came in out 1987, I was 19 and knee deep in trying to find any and everything about the group. At a June Atlanta show they played the original/instrumental version of the song, which worked really well. They said it would be a new single coming out soon.
I was so into the group that I saw the movie Disorderlies that summer, just to see a cameo of Brian and Mike at the very end of the movie. Man, I would love to have those 2 hours back!!

I've been around but lurking for decades, lol. Actually, there was an Uber fan with same first and last name (Chuck Williams) that passed away awhile back. Mike gave him a shout out when he passed.
But with all this talk on wipeout, I just remembered something else I found awhile back. When Billy Hinsche passed, Randy Straka uploaded the video below from a 1994 show. Excellent quality and sound. I could be wrong but I think Randy was a long time BB roadie or something along those lines.

Yeah to me that was when it got a little too corny…I get that they were playing to audiences of all ages and were just having fun but it’s just a bit too goofy for me, others are of course free to disagree. It was always odd how they wasted time playing covers of silly songs like wipeout or long tall Texan but couldn’t find room in the show for a few deep cuts from wild honey (other than the perennial Darlin’) or Friends or Sunflower….just kind of odd. But I guess in the 1990s (other than the autumn 1993 tour) the emphasis was on fun beach sing along vibes not heavy tunes that require you to really listen.

Wow, many thanks for that. Am sure I recall seeing a very similar performance – Billy rapping as a “Fat Boy”, and cheerleaders flying around – possibly Wembley, 1993? Edit: think that was the same gig from which the live version of Summer in Paradise was taken?

Billy seemed to adopt that as his own and did Wipe Out with California Surf, which was kind of a fun add to their setlist. One of those cheerleaders is Mrs. Jacquelyne Love. Those cheerleader ladies were amazing athletes doing fully airborne cartwheels.

Wipe Out was another kind of a crossover for them and really appealed to the kids you had in tow. And in the Still Cruisin' - Kokomo zone. I think they kept the shows with multigenerational fans very tight to keep the excitement high and their short attention spans going. And it might seem silly but Wipe Out was on VH1 and MTV which kids just glommed onto like a refrigerator magnet. So they knew the song. And saw the band being completely goofy. Yes, flashy and silly, I agree, but The Fat Boys were big with the kids and it worked in the live context. Personally, I'd have loved to have Wild Honey, but seeing very young kids go wild for that and Kokomo was an investment in a future dues-paying audience. They kept the shows moving.

Thank you very much for the info! I actually remember watching the show "Star Parade" as a kid, but in December 1968 I wouldn't exist for another 11 months.
