I know nothing, only hopes and speculation here...but I have maintained for years now, that a final BW album in the style of Love you/Rio Grande/Summers Gone is still possible. Look at Egypt Station...McCartneys voice is pretty shot, but he paired up with a great producer, and IMO came up w a pretty good record. Not Tug of War good, just enjoyable for a guy near the end of his professional life..
The way I see any future Brian project working, is for Paley,Darian,Bennett, Thomas, any collaborator really , to spend time pulling together the many fragments that already exist, get Brian on days he feels like it, to help sift through them and flesh them out, or mesh them w other fragments and get him (and only him) to sing on days he feels like it. His voice is weak and tired, no question, but I’ll bet there are times when he can still summon a “Summers Gone” style vocal. Stacks of growling Brian’s, is way better than stacks of Foskett/love/jardine/Thomas/all run through a blender of compressors and tuners...in other words, not a Frankenstein effort by 35 people, just a real portrait of a guy at 77, w minimal ornamentation. No Beach Boys, no young guest “stars.” Maybe coerce VDP into writing some wistful lyrics..
I’d line up to buy such a record, and I’m guessing most of you would too.

I am apparently the only person here who thinks another album won't happen. Odd. I thought my response earlier in the thread clearly indicated my belief that no new solo album will come to pass.
That said, I don't think NPP is anything like as bad as some here clearly do, and further I can't imagine another solo project some five years further down the line will be any improvement.

I was going by the poll results at the time I posted, but point taken

Which is why I think even a pseduo-archival release that recylces old material wouldn't be very good. Even though they're mostly fine as-is I don't get the impression Brian's people (for lack of a better term) want to let raw unrefined tracks go out. They'd almost certainly be prettied up with digital "enhancements" which kill the charm and harmonious quality the bootlegs have. In my opinion, we're about ten years too late for Brian to be able to go back and finish what's left of the Paley sessions (or any other material in the vaults) properly. It'd sound like GIOMH at best.

I think No Pier Pressure is Brian's best solo album (as I enter the basement fallout shelter). After hearing him sing with that damaged voice in the 1970's and 1980's, and at his advanced age, I never thought he'd be able to sing at the level he did on No Pier Pressure.

I don't think Brian's singing on That Lucky Old Sun is as good as Gershwin, Disney, No Pier Pressure, or parts of TWGMTR.

Its not my favorite, but probably top three, behind TLOS and WIRWFC.

Brian's singing is, IMHYEO, far better on TLOS because he's engaged with the project and because Joe Thomas wasn't even in the same postal zone.

How should I know? I'm only human!
The "Rock & Roll" Spectorish album he's been fantasizing for about 20 years. Didn't he call it "Pleasure Island" or whatever it was at one point? If he's still got it in him and if he does a good job on it, he could end his solo career on a high note. Even if it's loaded with covers (like Proud Mary), if he'd put in the full production effort and the songs sound anywhere's like "This Could Be The Night", he'd have a darn good album.

And - I'd love to see him work with the Band. If there is any barometer for what fans would like - it is only a look to TWGMTR or the RPO. Not to mention the synergy and good feelings that were very apparent at the SiriusXM event. The only book on Smile, I would/might like to see is a short one - with chapters done by The Beach Boys in the 1st person, or other vocalists (such as The Honeys) who have 1st hand reflections, on some of the creative sound effects Brian was looking to elicit and sessions that were done between the touring schedule. No ghost writers - just the reflections of the band, about that time, in their own words, about whatever they would like to share.

Yeah, a rock and roll album would be nice, but only with the right voices. Even though I just praised Brian's recent vocal work, rock and roll singing isn't his forte' and hasn't been for awhile. For a rock and roll album, then you could use an Al or a Blondie or a Darian or a...Beach Boy.

I agree w you Sherrif; Rock and roll singing hasn’t been his strength for a long time. But if you have Al, or Blondie, (am I the only one who thinks Blondie sounds bad now?) or a Beach Boy, (who’s left..) well, then it isn’t a Brian Wilson album anymore. Those who think NPP is his last may be proven right, but I feel the rather large group of folks around him who a) love him, and b) make CASH by their association with him, will keep trying to milk that cow till there is nothing left. (Was NOT meaning to call Brian a cow...) maybe this is just me, but I don’t really have interest in Brian singing a bunch of covers. He is one of the very best SONGWRITERS of the past 60 years. He was also one of the best SINGERS in popular music, but that ship sailed many years ago. No, give me, something real, warts and all, or as AGD said, round up all the music on the cutting room floor into some kind of anthology. Or, give me nothing..that’s ok too, He sure doesn’t OWE me anything else. Just drive to the Beverly Glen diner and enjoy your hamburgers..

Saw Blondie in December and did Oh, Holy Night - would make you cry. A rock album? Just whatever he would like to complete - my preference would be with the Band. The Boys.

If Brian is to ever do a rock album, I hope it would feature mostly non Brian leads. Even it peak form, Brian wasn't the best at singing rockers.
His current voice is more suited for the AC/MOR material that he's been doing in the 21st Century.

He should slow down tempo, like in Summer’s Gone. I think he can do it, if he’s focused in the studio no matter what it takes...

I think songs like Southern CA, Summer's Gone, PCH, and Whatever Happened suit his voice fine, and I'd be fine with a collection of songs in that vain. However, guest musicians who did not appear on a BB album need not apply

I think doling out parts to members of his band is as appropriate as doling them out to Beach Boys, especially since he's not especially likely to be working with Beach Boys. (Al and maybe Blondie aside, I guess.) For me, Matt, Darian, Nick, Mike ... they're as deserving and worthy of leads as anyone at this point, and more capable of handling them than most.
But I could definitely support an absence of alleged hot new guest stars. Those things tend not to work out well.

Yeah, I'd be fine with Brian's bandmembers taking some leads too.

I get that people lacking confindence in Brian’s current vocal prowess propose that other people sing instead of him. I don’t agree. What’s the point of the solo career and solo album? Let him sing the darn record -if there is to be one- and rock out with what’s left of his voice.
If Brian was to produce a Wondermints album, or a Blondie album then great. But if the label says “Brian Wilson”, I wanna hear him.

I voted 'probably not', thought mostly because I don't want to get my hopes up.
I'm guessing you could have asked this question in the early 90s and received a lot of 'probably not' replies. So I'd like to leave out hope that it could happen.
I would take anything. Rock and roll covers. Outtakes from previous albums. 12 different versions of Love and Mercy. More Brian is never a bad thing for my ears.

Ya know Sheriff, I usually disagree with you on just about everything on here, Smiley and PS forums, but you nailed it here. Though I think That Lucky Old Sun is a quirky, cool little album with a few good songs, I don't think it is as crazy awesome as a lot on the boards think. And yeah, I don't think his vocals on it are that awesome. I honestly prefer No Pier Pressure and I think his vocals on that and the latest Beach Boys album were the best I've heard from him since like Sunflower.
