Jack was great for the band 1970-72, no question... but fact is he got that position by lying about his background. If that tells you anything it speaks volumes for the band's due diligence at the time. Again, we don't know for sure that Jack got the position because he lied about his credentials. If he hadn't embellished things he STILL might have got the job, right? Love and merci, Dan Lega

Jack's lyrics are obviously much better although: "To sooth my poor throat, I popped a cough drop" should have been retained as is or with a slight contextual tweak; "To sooth my poor throat, I sucked on a Fisherman's Friend" That's a dictionary worthy example of Australian humour if ther ever was one! LOL - British delicacy of infamacy actually: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisherman%27s_FriendAn ex-Pat uncle of mine was addicted to them, found them quite a challenge.

I think the ingredients for this sweetie (used to sell it in my dad's shop) once included creosote, before it was banned in any foodstuffs… might have been another cough sweet, not sure.

Come on, Al, you didn't really mean the cough drop when you wrote "suck on a Fisherman's Friend", did you? I distinctly remember a T-Shirt for sale in Victoria Market that pictured a "happy fisherman". That said, I used the coughdrop of the same name quite often in the past decades. The only cough it didn't soothe was Covid - on both occasions that I had it, so they are my personal Covid test.
