You know how sometimes you’re looking for something specific on YouTube and you come across something good by accident? Today, I found this interesting clip that was just posted by EH member ‘Elora’. Thanks for this! This is a concert from March 3, 1978 in Melbourne, Australia. I’ve watched the 1978 gig from Largo, Md. quite a few times, but not this one in as good of quality.
It’s interesting. The Wilson/Love factions on stage. Brian seems OK, Dennis is very coherent during this gig, but Carl has his moments with slurring and provocative comments. Dennis even shows surprise at some of the stuff Carl says. This was about 5 days before the concert in Perth, Australia where Carl’s singing was influenced by alcohol and smack and he falls down on stage. All three Wilson brothers were going through marital difficulties at the time.
Carli Muñoz on the piano with Dennis on Rhonda. During this time, Carli was writing songs with Dennis for Dennis’ Bambu album. Along with Dennis on drums is Mike Kowalski. Charles Lloyd on flute and sax. Ed Carter on guitar, Elmo Peeler on piano/keys. I don’t see Bobby Figuera on percussion or Billy Hinsche. And didn’t Ron Altbach tour with them around this time? I think the 'Celebration' and 'Almost Summer' projects were being worked on during this period.
Anyway, a good video, representing the 1978 period. A section of this was broadcast on March 10th on Aussie TV.

I found this info I posted from 2008 re' the Oz tour:
"First up BIG THANKS to Stephen McParland for his assistance in putting the following information together - especially concerning the concert dates. 1978 Australian tour dates: 1st March 1978: Arrived in Sydney. 2nd March 1978: National News Conference, Boulevade Hotel Sydney. 3rd March 1978: Depart Sydney. 5th March 1978: Brisbane Concert 8th March 1978: Melbourne Concert. Myer Music Bowl. 9th March 1978: Melbourne Concert. Myer Music Bowl. 12th March 1978: Adelaide Concert. 14th March 1978: Perth Concert. Perth Entertainment Centre 15th March 1978: Perth Concert. Perth Entertainment Centre 16th March 1978: Arrive back in Sydney. 17th March 1978: Gold Record Presentation at Sebel Townhouse 18th March 1978: Sydney Concert. Sydney Sporstground. 19th March 1978: Sydney Concert. Sydney Sportsground.
10th May 1978: Broadcast on the Seven Network of a section of the March 9th Melbourne show.
Prior to the arrival of the Beach Boys in Australia they played a couple of concerts in New Zealand.
To clarify the original question:
The two tracks of God Only Knows and Good Vibration where Carl is very "drunk" were from the March 14 Perth show. These two tracks were booted on the Lei'd In Hawaii (Vigotone) boot in 1994 but the tracks were mistakenly listed as "Live in Sydney February 13 1978".
The full concert where Carl is still "under the weather" is from the March 15 Perth Show at the Perth Entertainmnet Centre. The show was booted on the "Surfin' Down Under" boot on Rock Calendar Records in 1993 - On the boot the show is again mistakenly credited as "Live in Perth, Western Australia Cricket Ground. February 14 1978" - venue and date are both incorrect.
The TV footage is from the March 9th show from the Myer Music Bowl show in Melbourne. The footage was aired on Australian TV on the Seven Network on May 10 1978.
The March 5 Brisbane Show as far as I know has not been "officially booted" but copies are doing the collectors circuit."

As I note-the video from Melbourne has been known for years but a New Zealand show at the beginning of the tour was also filmed and a guy told me once that it was still in the tv studio vault gathering dust-would be interesting to see-though probably similar to Melbourne-it was a very messed up tour

Pretty rare to see a member of the Beach Boys (other than Dennis and Brian) under the influence. Just shows that they're human! I'm glad that Carl got himself together quickly and moved on.

I have a long discussion of that tour based on a few sources-one of whom was sterling smith (he was clearly also a source for Steven Gaines who had some of the same stories in his book). As detailed within-the infamous meeting with David frost, where rocky knocked Carl out was after the first Melbourne show, so Carl had to perform in front of the camera while on painkillers the next day! It didn’t help that he had a few beers before going on and possibly something else..:not a good recipe for a great performance!

Sterling Smith was someone I talked to in 1981 at the Hyatt. He was a friend of a friend of my brother's.
I wonder if some of David Frost's info came from Stan Love. He taped the meeting and Mike used that tape for his book.

Yeah you might recall that by 1981 he was in randy meisner’s band. I did a long interview with him-very nice guy with a great memory and a real fondness for Dennis.

Yes, he was with Randy at the time, although he was hanging with the BB band.

Very sad to see Carl in bad shape on that tour. In addition to being drunk or high, he's also very, very overweight. He looks - and sounds - sooo much better on the Midnight Special a year later.

A poor quality audio exists among collectors. I once tried to access the video for a fan convention and even offered a security but to no avail. The reason given was that the rights were held by BRI. As an aside, I am in contact with a guy who attended the 1964 Hamilton, New Zealand concert. He has vivid memories.

Speaking of un-circulating concert recordings from down under...from the April 23, 1970 show in Melbourne, Keith Badman writes, "An excellent quality recording survives in private hands, taped by a member of the audience...". Not too many tapes are known to exist from 1970, and only one other from before the big Big Sur revival in October (the February Seattle show with Brian and without Mike). It's pretty much the "wilderness" era of Beach Boys shows...

The Rare Gems vinyl boot includes Dennis singing "You are so beautiful" at the Adelaide concert. The whole show was taped by an audience member with the intent of booting it, but the sound quality is too poor with too much audience noise.

As bad as the two commonly heard tracks are(GOK and GB), the entire show is a trainwreck. The version of Darlin', in particular.

Y'know... considering he's drunk and smacked up to the eyeballs, that's not such a bad performance. Don't get me wrong, by any rational yardstick it's horriffic, but if I'd taken what he'd taken that day I'd be dribbling on the floor for the next 48 hours, incapable of movement never mind singing.

Maybe they should put this out on cd - it seems to be Carl's most popular performance.

Jay - there is usually something redeemable even in train-wreck shows - at least that has been my experience - you can't let a bad moment ruin a whole experience. Some great shows have awful audiences so it is like pulling teeth for entertainers - but they have a good close or encore and everyone gets to leave with a smile.
