i thought Bill Camp's Murry was a highlight of the otherwise boring 60s sections of Love and Mercy.
There's a hot take for you: only half of L&M is really any good; the 80s sections and the bed scene are transcendental cinema.
My one issue with the 80s portion is that I wish they'd have given Carl a part, rather than just being a voice on the other end of a phone call that we never hear. I wish they'd given John Cusack a hairpiece for his role as Brian...the real Brian of the '80s had a nice thick head of hair, and Cusack's receding hairline just doesn't do him justice.

They really didn't do anything to make Cusack look like Brian. At least Paul Giamatti got a piece.

That said, I thought Cusack did a good job capturing Brian's mannerisms from what I recall (I saw the movie two years ago.) Dano was good enough, but it felt like he was playing a caricature at times. (But Brian himself praised the performance so obviously...this is a hot take. )

I think this would've made a fantastic scene in the film.
Although the case is scheduled to go to court Monday, Wilson says it may not get that far, partially because of a recent meeting between Wilson and Carl at a hotel near the Los Angeles airport. ''Just me and Carl . . .'' Wilson says. ''Just two brothers. We were singing. There was a piano there. We were doing our vocals.''
The brothers sang some old Beach Boys classics-including ''Wild Honey'', ''Aren`t You Glad'' and ''Darlin` ''.

I think Cusack is a mighty fine actor, but he didn't convince me that it was Brian he was portraying. It was much easier for me to buy Dano as Brian. Part of that is because Cusack looked mostly like himself in L&M. I felt like I was watching two stories about two different men.

Part of that is because Cusack looked mostly like himself in L&M. I felt like I was watching two stories about two different men. Paul Dano pulled me right into the world of Brian, whereas in the 80s parts of the movie, all I could see was John Cusack looking like John Cusack, sounding like John Cusack, acting like I have no idea. And I’m a very big Cusack fan. I liked the concept of using two different actors to play different parts of Brian’s life, but I think another actor who was less John Cuscack should have been cast for 80s Brian.

I found both Dano and Cusack unconvincing.

Would love to read the piece but…

That's my big roadblock with the movie: the 60s scenes have multiple documented sources while the 80s section is, essentially, one person saying "this is how it was".

I often think that this song should have been revived for the 1985 self titled album. Or maybe for KTSA.

Hey wait a sec, I had never heard this before, didn’t know it existed. It’s good! Did a quick google and couldn’t find anything about it. What’s the story behind this song?

That's my big roadblock with the movie: the 60s scenes have multiple documented sources while the 80s section is, essentially, one person saying "this is how it was". For me, the biggest issue with the movie is the way the two stories don't fit together. The 60s section doesn't end with Brian breaking down and Landy moving in (obviously, as the years don't line up). The 80s section doesn't end with the triumphant return to the SMiLE music and facing the demons (obviously, as the years don't line up). So it's just two random stories in a man's life which have no real significance being paired together. It feels like it should have either just focused on one of the stories and done it more thoroughly. Or, instead of just 2, tell Brian's life in a handful of 20-30 minute vignettes (maybe one for each decade from the 60s to the 00s?) which together chronicle his life.

One more quibble about Love & Mercy -- both actors playing Brian have brown eyes, not blue eyes like Brian's.

That is too bad because often - in order to preserve authenticity, an actor will get contact lenses in the color of the person being portrayed. You noticed a fine detail - thanks. Details do matter.

Mike mentions in his book that it was about Patricia DePadua who Mike was seeing. She was involved in a car accident and was initially on life support before passing away. It's a touching section of the book and a touching song.
